Awesome advice. I remember, at a wild party in the late 70's ,being chased by a squirrel that big😜.

Ryan, I have a ton of oak, and it is horrible w cracking. So much so, I had to switch to epoxy clay (then carve) for the wille nelson bust I'm doing. I'm going to try this with the tail feathers on a big rooster carve. Thanks for your info. Xo

Great advise Ryan...Although after doing a great carving and then spoiling it with a deep cut to relieve cracking would it be possible to do as you say, make a cut but then pack the crack with splints ..That way the tension has been relieved but a hidden and superficial repair makes the carving look good again?

@@RyanCookCarvin some of the coolest looking wood is so fragile I go ahead and seal first and then carve and seal again. Water curing too will eliminate the stress if sealers aren't wanted in finished product

Could you take that cut you did and also plung it to hide the cut? This way it would not expose the cut but allow for a controlled crack? Plung in from your cut going up to the head but keeping it subsurface.
