The irony is if the BMPCC 4K cost 10k, no one would complain about the 'missing' features or battery life.

Honestly I think part of the problem is they made the price so cheap that they've attracted an audience that really isn't ready for true cinema cameras. After rigging up my GH4 like a cinema camera, running old lenses, external preamps and external recorders, everyone said, "Buy a GH Panasonic:" I hate it, hate it, hate it!

The latest bmpcc 6k sucks .. sure it has great image quality, good low light abilities, great color science, 12-bit RAW formats, 6k resolution, high frame rates, affordable price point, and good dynamic range ... BUT it doesn’t have dual pixel autofocus combined with IBIS like the GH5 .. what was Black Magic thinking? I’m joking of course.

Love how real you are about how it sounds to pros when people talk about autofocus - the reality is that most people who learn about cameras gear do so from popular reviewers who make videos for fast turnaround content online, and thus their needs center around speed and accessibility! I know this because I am one of those viewers LOL. It's easy to forget that the amount of high end working cinematographers and videographers is proportionally tiny compared to the actual viewer base :) Great distinctions between the 3 major branches of video!

correct but u cant blame someone for wanting everything, for example if i had the money an i bought a RED or ARRI i would love for them to have auto focus, because even if u don't want to use it, its still an option... the camera that's going and WIN is one that can do everything... which is very possible in the future..

An important piece but still just a piece that needs the rest of the kit fleshed out. Also it was refreshing to hear someone call out that "garbage in" always results in "garbage out" but "quality in" is just the first step for a successful post production.

Great video, you mentioned the number one reason why to buy the BMPCC 6k and that is superior image quality. The only reason I have not already owned a Cinema camera or video camera before now is because I am a true hybrid shooter. My projects are split between video and still photography. However, more projects are moving toward video production now and my mirrorless and DSLRs are not giving me the quality The BMPCC 6k is at the perfect price point that I can buy that without having to sell my still bodies. Also, the EF mount will let me use all my Canon glass or rent reasonable priced Cine lenses. It's also good to see a fellow combat camera still behind the camera (USMC Combat Camera 99-07).

This video is fantastic. So articulate. It basically sums up my frustration with people on facebook and forums crying about the camera and treating it like a video camera or DSLR. I waited a long time after it came out, and did a lot of research before pulling the trigger. And I love it. I don't treat it like a DSLR and was prepared for the rigging required, and it serves me fantastic. But the key is knowing what you're getting into and if it's right for you...and in fact it does what it's intended to do very well. Once you understand its capabilities and limitations, I'd even argue it DOES do well in uncontrolled situations, but you have to understand the tools you need to make it work in a wedding environment the same way that people who shoot weddings on RED cameras do.

I agree with you but there’s a lot of people out there who want a hybrid camera with cinema video quality so they can make their run and gun short films look amazing. And I get that these people shouldn’t be looking at cinema cameras, I totally agree with that. However we’re all just waiting for something like the a7siii and hoping that it has that cinema quality with all the benefits of having a hybrid camera. I’m talking about extra raw but a compressed raw where it already has distortion corrected and Sony’s low light algorithms with noise reduction. I’m talking about internal Electronic ND filters, fast and accurate auto focus, really good stills capabilities, etc.

The whole reason i bought a BMPCC4K (after i used two BMPCC's) was the image quality and being able to control your whole image in post production. I love the endless possibilities in colorgrading even with multiple LUTS and layers without crushing the footage. The BMPCC was the first camera i bought. A lot of people told me it was headache for a beginner, but i really didnt care. I loved the image quality and that was where i was going for. I was willing to sacrifice my mental health and sanity to achieve those images. Within a year i made enough money to buy a BMPCC4K. I shoot all my client work on it now. From coorperate, to wedding video's and music video's. The BMPCC4K can be used as a run and gun camera. It just needs a bit more patience and strategy to control your environment. That is why i always bring lamps and reflectors with me. I wouldnt trade it for the world.

You are totally right. A lot of people complaint about its poor battery life and not having a flip screen. They don't realize what they bought is a cinema camera not a mirrorless camera. You have to rig it up, buy an external monitor and V mount battery in order to use a cinema camera. Maybe the form factor and price make them think they are buying a mirrorless camera. I guess every now and then there is the need to address this. When BMPCC 4K was public I remember reading and/or hearing comments complaining about, as you said, things like the screen, the battery, the lack of autofocus. It was like Blackmagic did that on purpose in order to make people upset: «why didn’t you put this or that feature?». I mean, for some of those decisions there is at least even a technical reason, as for the fact that the battery lasts 30/40 minutes for example. That said, I guess the keyword here is in fact the one you kept repeating on this video: «modular». I’m not a pro but I still feel like I’m stating the obvious here but it strikes me everytime how today, with so many channels at our disposal, we struggle nonetheless in order to get our info right. I think is cultural: we see the quality, then we compare it to the price and voila... we pretend the learning curve to be as “inexpensive” as the money we spend for the gear. It is something I myself need to re-address often since I’m a son of this Age as well: work, work and work. Thanks for the content.

If you're the type of filmmaker that looks at an Arri Alexa and wonders why it has so much crap attached to it, this camera is not for you. Get a GH5. This is a dedicated cinema camera for filmmakers. It's impractical, expensive to setup, and just plain amazing. If you want run and gun and convenient stabilization, buy a GH5. Also Fuji and Black Magic still have the best color short of Arri/Red, which I can't afford and surely you can't afford either most likely =). So if you want a much better color profile than what the GH5/5s can offer, but you're on the fence about this then, get a Fujifilm XT3 and slap it on a gimbal. Better than in body stabilization anyways.

Good info boss for all the kids out there that want to "emulate Hollywood Cinema". Howevever, Tell them to STOP shooting EVERYTHING in Slo-Mo, They need to learn, Slow Motion does NOT Equal Cinematic. Shooting Cinematically equals Cinema. Also teach them WHY Hollywood uses ONLY Cinema cameras for %100 control over the image being recorded or filmed. They can see examples of this simply by putting on their Favorite 3 movies and count just how many Slo-Mo sequences are in those films. The number will be ZERO or close to it. The camre you buy will NOT magically transform you or your content into a "Cinematographer". it takes years! of learning.... 1-Cinematic Lighting / for a natural look and feel. 2-What Lens to use for each particular Scene. 3-Focal Lengths 4-Hight of camera to subject. 5-Distance of camera to subject. 6-Camera movement is needed. 7-Frame Rate and why. 8-What filtees to use and when. 9-And just as important? as the video?, The quality of your Sound. AND 10?- Watch Hollywood films and Practice Practice practice. what I want is a combination between, a cinama cam and a ninja v with the qualities of a A7iii , Z6 and BMPCC 6K. If the Fs5 would have had these qualities would have been a perfect video camera. in fact a fs 5 with a full frame sensor from sony or Nikon with a screen from fantom 4 pro+, functions and capabilities from a Ninja V, auto focusing from Sony imagine stabilizare from GH5 which records in 4K on a ssd 24,25,60,50,120frs in MOV, pro rez. it should be called NIKON Envy 1, because everyone will be envious. ;)))

I understand the history and and that high dollar shoots don't use autofocus, but having usable autofocus would skyrocket marketability and value of the bmpcc. And there's no downside, having autofocus as an option in no way negates the ability to use manual. But opens up usability for small crews or unusual uses. 1st AC's are expensive. I for one would rather pay an extra $200 for a version with Sony or even Fuji tier autofocus, save the money/hastle every time I don't have to hire a second operator on jib shots and interview b-cams that don't absolutely need one. Or be able to use my $1300 investment for less formal work like self filming or family events, instead of having to buy a second camera. I'd even go in another few $100 for IBIS, because why not? You can always just turn it off. As you've said before, it's not a race car, it's a Camaro. IMO autofocus and even IBIS make sense on almost every camera except top grade rigs which will absolutely never use them. But that's not what the bmpcc is. Cheers

I think that all your videos are incredibly educational and I've definitely have learned a lot from your videos. so thank you! what I like to know is what are your thoughts on the BMPCC 6K VS the S1H in terms of "a controlled environment " filming and wolfcrow's scientific opinions on the BMPCC 6K and 4k. and "the DP journey's" thought on the S1H vs BMPCC 6k and his thought on the IBIS feature that we now find in hybrid cameras and where the future is heading with those features. After watching your video, I was convinced that the BMPCC 6K was the choice for me after your statement on what this camera really is and what it can provide for film creators. but then if you watch wolf crow's video link here kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGWlY397aMqaeNk.... it ( what i believe) contradicts your thoughts on this camera and THE DP JOURNEYs' ...kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqGZqKqjYsh0hKs...opinion on these two camera's only because of his history. I truly hope that you can give a little feedback not only for me but for a lot of individuals in my shoes watching and learning from your videos. your feedback is invaluable to me and I'm sure to many others. thank you

That designation, "Pocket Camera" doesn't quite stand behind its name. It doesn't really want to fit in a pocket🤔, less you doesn't have a very big pockets🤪. But it is one of the first cameras with Panasonic's GH5 to provide for an ordinary working-class consumer possibility to get cinematic motion picture quality🎬. Of course, in that low price tag some compromises must have done.🧐 But when the gear is right in order, then comes to the picture your talent, and that's the thing you cannot buy.....🎭😏

Yep, the whines scream AMATEUR. I get it though, the bmpcc 4k is most people's first try at a cinema camera from a history in DSLRs.

I just bought the Original BMPCC. I'm rigging it out and its awesome. I just reather use my black magic and save my money later on to get the E camera that just came out. As I'm saving money for that I can buy all the lenses the speed booster the monitors I'm thinking about getting a Ninja V later on this way I'll have everything when I upgrade. Love you're channel. 🤘😎

Hey, I'm thinking about buying this camera. I pretty much only make narrative films in a run and gun style with a 70-200 lens. If I rig this out, can I get stable enough shots?! I'm considering the S1h for its IBIS. But will it be that much better?

You really can't complain about the BMPCC. It's an insane camera with it's own RAW codec and you get the best color grading application there is for FREE!. Also blackmagic released an update so you can edit and grade your braw footage in premiere. It is WAY to cheap for what it really is, trust me.
