A lot of what you said about people skipping steps is also because of the America motorcycle system, everywhere else in the world there's progressive licenses where you are literally forced to start on a 125. I think crashing on a 125 is less devastating and gives you that reality check where you get to see you're not invincible without straight up throwing your life away.

same with cars, a good buddy of mine started out with a v6 charger(powerful enough to get in trouble, but nowhere near as dangerous as some of the other chargers). after a promotion at work and some training on AC(god has he improved), he decided to get a Scat pack, having started with an X308 XJ(V8, plenty of power for a noob with a world beating suspension setup) and currently driving an SL500(decent power, but aggressive traction control; it won't let you lose traction in the rain; aggressively cuts engine power). My first warning to him was about tire specs , as in do not ignore tire speed ratings(I.E Y rated tires are capable of 186+mph , so they're even better at keeping you shiny side up at 60mph in the rain than anything of a lower rating). He learned the hard way by spinning in the rain, no damage to the car or himself; but the next week he had purchased Y rated tires and booked a autox event. I can't stress the value of training enough.

Now I have a 600 and I am so glad I had lessons on a large bike and years on a 125 so I have already made all the mistakes before in a forgiving way. I have had so many near misses, near slips, and random breakdowns on my beater 125, I am pretty prepared on my 600 and I respect the power I've now got.

Youre speaking the truth. Take the steps or respect the power of a motorcycle. Social media has for sure made the most impact on doing crazy stuff. If you are riding on the street you should be riding less than 50% of your ability, so there is room for when something unexpected happens. Those things still happen and people riding beyond their skill get killed.

When I was in my teens back in the 90s, I rode 50cc bikes/scooters. They didn't require a license. I didn't care that they couldn't go fast, it was still fast enough for riding around town. And I got myself in trouble a couple of times. To me even 125cc and 250cc bikes seemed too powerful when I was first starting out lol. And technology has improved a lot since then too. Today's 300cc and 400cc which are commonly recommended as beginner bikes are so much more powerful than what we had back then.

People lose their life, lose limbs, lose the ability to think for themselves. I think about this experience everyday, "if i didn't start in that bike, I would not be ready for my ZX9R"...AT ALL! The ZX9R is heavy with a longer wheel-base than most crotch-rockets. Luckily I stopped in time and she was just sitting there in her car screaming "IM SORRY" still blocking my path. Glad you're ok and going to keep riding, just assume everybody is going to pull out in front of you all the time. Then it got totaled because another guy on a GSXR decided to run into the back of me in the twisties. Anyways I upgraded and I got an MT-09 SP. Your right there are levels to this riding shit. The 400 is nothing compared to an MT-09. I think trackdays have helped with the transition from the 400. Its all helped with controlling the bike as well as controlling your throttle. Its made me be smoother overall. Im right there with you there been too many rider deaths, whether it be them at fault or some dubass driver. Ive had an r1 since i was 16. im 18 now and i dont see age as an important factor, its all about experience. People watch these guys and want to do the same “because its cool” Most people with bikes have grown up riding bikes their entire lives because they genuinely enjoy it. Others buy one “because its cool”, thats what gets people killed. These new riders dont want to put work in and cant understand the right moments or places to go fast. Especially running from police, speed is not the way to run. Again its all about experience and new riders dont feel the need to learn. Its pretty ironic most of these people dying have no license, no insurance, and a clean record, its honestly Natural Selection at this point.

Hot take, I think raw skill and natural talent play a huge part in whether or not you can safely buy a 1000cc bike. You also need a lot of discipline. There is only so much that experience can get you. The average American driver has been on the road for 17-20 years, and most of them suck at driving. If you've ever gotten in an accident that is your fault, you should probably never buy an 1000cc, regardless of how much experience you obtain. Raw skill + discipline >>>> experience

Best evolution Dirtbike and then 600, time between the two is case by case. Dirtbike you can wreck often with minimal injuries if you trail ride or motocross. Learn what not to do at a basic level. Clutch control, weight transfer, gas, and balance… maybe brakes while ur at it. After all that bs at a somewhat cost effective level then get a 600. Any less will be boring on the street.

im 18 and i just got my first street bike which even while i have been riding dirtbikes started when i was like 11 on a 110 and still to this day have a crf450r and i can say that even though they are both bikes its a world of difference hopping on a street bike from a 450 i got a fz6 for my first bike and there are so many different things you need to account for on a street bike then you do motorcross or anything else just practice!!!

Been riding a 2015 R3 for four years. It was a great bike all around and allowed me to learn a ton while growing riding skills. This weekend I'll be picking up a 2006 R1 Raven Edition. I'm making the jump because I feel like I've learned what I had to with my R3 and because this is my dream bike. Every inch of it is pure beauty. I don't care about going faster than I was on the R3. Hell, I'll probably miss the nimble little thing. But I'm aware of what I'm getting into and It's just a bike I want to grow in and be able to tour with. Acting like a maniac is not the point. Giving heart attacks to people doing their grocery is not the point. Losing the bike and a leg to a pothole is not the point. Getting girls is not the point... and let's be real, bikes only work on guys. There's actually a "scooter group" in my town. Kids with very recent and capable machines. They ride as if they had scooters (all packed up, no muffler and just revving through town). It's sad, because while they aren't killing themselves they're out being nuisance. I assume what they crave is attention, because they don't seem to go out in the country much. Other than that, I don't hear about that many sport bike crashes where I live so that's a good thing. Most riders are older dudes with cruisers / Harleys. Plates are still 2K tho

thats a big jump, i mean a gigantic leap. i would strongly rec. going with a r6, only a 20mph difference and the r6 wont accidentally stand up when you slip on throttle a millesec.

@@aaronferguson9328 Update: had to ride the R1 500km to get it home. No words can describe it, was laughing for the first hour at the cheer insanity this bike is. The riding is however incredibly smooth and responsive. I actually think the throttle is very friendly in how it delivers power. You won’t “accidentally” get too much, only what you ask for. What I need to get used to however is the low speed handling. It feels strange, not just because of the weight but the way you push on the bar isn’t like the R3 or other bikes I’ve used. Must be the angle. Otherwise incredible bike, no regret!

I rode dirt bikes for about 6-7 years as a kid. I’m looking to get into a 600-750 street bike because I know I can respect the power of it. If I try to start on something like a 300-400 I just wouldn’t respect it and would get way too bold. Idk if I’m looking for opinions on if it’s a good idea but yeah, feel free to give them.

Its just the feeling of being on a bike and riding with other like minded people. Don't listen to the people who sham you or say your to slow for owning a 300. whoever tf says shit like that needs to stop cause they could damn well be the reason some young dumb 17y old like myself kills himself

where i live there is age restriction for the licenses to get higher powered bikes. Where i am you need to be 24 to get basically anything over 400 OR you need to have had an A2 for 2 years. And you can only get an A2 license at 18. (A2 is the license 1 step below A which is the above 400 class you could say). l

"Hey, I'm gonna give new riders advice on how to be safe, while being an example that once you feel "comfortable" you no longer need to wear gear." That's some 80 IQ reasoning right there. Still see people brag all over than in the usa you should start with a 1000cc, probably the sames that have not much brains to say a thing like that. Those few that really can start with a 1000cc, are careful by nature and know that the majority of others are risking their lives so they will never recomend that to a newbie. People dont understand one little mistake on the throttle, you are gone, the weight, the speed that you get ahead is too much for the brain compreend its possible, thats a kind of bike that its made to bite you back to put you on the edge, and then you are still learning with a rocket under you, you will learn nothing out of fear
