• The Biggest Forehand M... | Full-Length Video - The Biggest Forehand Mistakes Disc Golfers Make (PART 1 of 2)
With newer players learning to forehand, we often see them trying to force the disc over on anhyzer during their follow-through. They believe this technique, known as a flex shot, will grant them extra distance. While it does grant extra distance initially, it forms a detrimental habit that can be difficult to break later on when attempting to throw different lines.
When first learning to forehand, you want to start by learning to get the disc to do its natural flight, which means, releasing the disc on a slight hyzer to get the disc to flip up and right straight or turn to the right to finish. This is the most typically used shot for forehands and backhands, so it’s a good one to know first and it’s the most natural to perform.

Exactly! I use the sidewinder as a good indicator of form. If you can release that disc smoothly without wobble you probably have good technique.

I got a good tip for learning Forehand, 7-9 speed discs. It has been improving my game and form. 7 speed discs are so comfortable in the hand..

Agreed! We want to do a video discussing how 7 speed seems to be the ideal all-around speed 👍

Agreed! That's why I went to an all MVP/Axiom fairway line up. Crave, Resistor, and Rhythm all feel so similar in the hand and most MVP discs are flatter so they're great on BH or FH.

sure it may be hard for me to hyzer a forehand, but as long as you choose the right disc and stability. my force overs are one of my most reliable shots for getting to my target

Solid advice. ✌️ Being an (up until now) backhand only player, this is somehow the ONLY mistake that I’ve never made throwing forehand drives. Haha If anything it was always too much hyzer which is now finally paying off.

This may be true but the flex shot is still a really good shot to know how to do well. It's not good for every shot, but it can be used on many situations, especially when you need to weave through trees

I went to a Scott Stokely seminar and he was telling us to throw a disc like a baseball, and to start by throwing flex shots and slowly work your way to straighter lines

I've had a lot of success with the baseball thing. I don't even really feel the disc after I set my grip, it's just a solid object in my hand

scott is the man for forehand, went to a clinic almost 30 years ago and learned tons! i used to pitch sidearm or submarine in baseball so it was "easy" converting over to throwing a disc the same way

I see this same claim everywhere and I just don't agree with it. Of course if you are a pro or spend tons of times practicing, then sure it's a good shot to have. However, If you are at all proficient with your backhand throwing only overstable discs on forehand will provide you enough of a complement to attack every hole. Overstable discs are more forgiving and provide the strong fade, which is why BH dominant players throw the forehand in the first place. Also, I don't think throwing hyzer is the "natural" angle for your arm. When you throw anything else, it's always above your waste and usually above your elbow level. So yes, if you want to become the next Koling or just want to impress your friends then go for it. If you are a casual player, just focus on your strenghts and complement that with some overstable FH shots.

Videos on KZbin pretend that one size fits all. What might be great advice for a 15 year-old isn't necessarily great advice for an old guy like me.

I bought a Westside xxx and started throwing flex and just rode the stability down to the point that it needs a hyzer release to get the full flight. Probably could've learned faster if I started with a disc closer to neutral

Good advice, but after a certain point you have under stable and over stable discs of all speeds in your bag that you BH or FH gives the right hyzerflip or laser beam to fade depending on the shot you want. It's just a damn journey of time practice and money to get to what works best for you imo

For sure! We aren’t saying flex shots are bad, just make sure you don’t shot away from learning to release on hyzer👍

I don't necessarily agree with this, especially the part about it being the most natural. Playing baseball, sidearm throws that come out below 90 degree or throwing straight overhand are the most damaging to your shoulder and elbow. Somewhere around 10-15 degrees above perfectly level is the range where you have the most power and least opportunity to damage yourself in your throws. Now I am not advocating throwing there all the time, you still have to practice and learn angle control for different shots. But that slight anhyzer release is where you DO get the most power and the least damage to your body, at least for the forehand mechanics. In my younger days I could control that sidearm release on a hyzer, but the older I get the more painful that shot becomes, so I use it less and less. I do have pretty good angle control for my forehands anywhere between 45 degrees anny to 45 degrees hyzer when I'm NOT dealing with pain.

How can you say it’s the most natural angle to perform when everybody is different. What’s natural to you might not be natural to me. Some people feel more comfortable with releasing on hyzer, while some on anhyzer/flat. I could use the same logic about learning on a hyzer and say if you do it this way, you might struggle with learning anhyzer later on?
@1isone
@1isone 4 ай бұрын
I learned with Firebirds and Destroyers, and started with anhyzers/flat because it was a lot more comfortable for me, less then a year later a throw Destroyers and Wraiths 380 and very accurately with firebirds, FD3’s and Exodus/Eagles 300-350 and on all angles, never was it hard to learn other angles despite starting with anhyzers. It’s different for everybody.

I learned forehand with super stable discs. I’ve grown to throw less stable discs. I don’t have any issue knowing how to turn over a stable disc or flip up a flippy disc. This has no real merit
