Nice video. Instead of squeezing the disc hard at the very beginning of your run up, I find it’s best to gradually increase your grip pressure as you come through the power pocket. That way, your arm can stay loose and relaxed at first.

A lot depends on your exact grip style. With my old grip, I could hold it super tight with 4 fingers. But I've changed the angle of the disc in my hand, after watching a Ulibarri video about it. With the new angle, the disc is flatter in my hand and I can't grip it as hard any more. Also, another video mentioned putting 95% of the pressure on the first finger and thumb, rather than evenly over all 4 fingers. That's helping me too.

Glad you mentioned the working it - the strength of the grip- back. Also from Scott Stokley, he mentioned the slapping someone in the face at the end. That’s how I have to think to keep from throwing nose up and stalling the disc. Also either Simon or maybe Joel Freeman mentioned the last step needs to be across the path. Overthrow mentioned if there is a straight line, your back foot would be behind it and the front plant foot would be in front of it. This offset MIGHT be what may be what helps keep the throw on line. So the journey continues for us all.

Man I've been playing disc golf right around 20 years. I've gotten better at putting and midrange shots, and while I've improved my accuracy on drives, I don't think I've improved at all on my driving distance. Its kinda embarrassing to admit but I struggle throwing farther than 250'. Anything else that involves throwing, I've always excelled, but when it comes to disc golf, I just cannot for the life of me throw a disc far. I've been repeating a vicious cycle of watching several disc golf instructional videos every week, and I try so hard to replicate what I've watched in the videos, I get excited when I see something that seems to click in my head. I think about it all day at work, anticipating trying out what I learned and convinced that I'll finally be able to break 300' with ease. I finally get out to the course and try to replicate what I watched and I end up disappointed because I don't see any improvement. If what you're saying is true about gripping the disc tightly and not opening the hand at release point, instead forcing the disc to be 'ripped' from your hand from the force of the swing......if this actually works, I owe you a beer, hell I owe you several cases of beer. Or at the very least my undying gratitude. Seriously though, you have no idea how down on myself I get because I've been playing for such a long time and I just cannot throw it far, or even throw it at what most would consider a veey average distance. I watched a video of a couple guys launching putters 400', and here I am, barely able to throw a distance driver half that distance. I know it has to be a serious flaw in my form, I have no doubt about it. But you may have just hit the nail on the head. Ive never ONCE heard from anyone that the disc should be ripped from your grip rather than gripping it tightly and releasing my grip at the latest point possible in my swing. I've setiously been doing it wrong for so long. I cant wait to try this out this weekend. I'll keep you posted on how it works. I'm kinda scared I'm going to grip it and it won't leave my hand lol!

And also, I'm sorry about writing an autobiography lol. It's just been such a sore spot for me for so long, and it's the one thing keeping me from doing things like bag tag tourneys and flip up doubles. My drives are so pathetically short that I don't have the guts to play with some of the better folk.

Im so happy that you have stuck with it all this time! I hope this tip helps you as much as it has helped me. It certainly takes some getting used to and I still struggle every round with "opening my hand" instead of following through and letting the disc rip out. I think its very helpful to view this exercise as "going to an extreme" so you can learn how to dial it back and find that perfect balance. Throwing discs far is VERY hard and it can be disheartening when you feel like you are surrounded by people that can throw farther than you. Luckily the disc golf community is one of the kindest groups Ive ever met and you should DEFINITELY go play doubles and tournaments! If you can throw 200' with accuracy then that is a MUCH more useful tool than being able to throw 300+ feet with poor accuracy in my opinion!! I really hope this tip helps! Id also encourage you to find out which release angle is most comfortable for you and then pick discs that will cater to your strength. I am most powerful on a steep hyzer release so my furthest flying discs are very understable. You're a champ just for playing as long as you have and I really hope this helps you make progress!

I'd also like to note that I am an avid rock climber so my fingers are quite strong and the disc STILL rips out of my hand! It might take a few tries to feel it but when you get that snap the first time its magical!
@crimsontide1980
@crimsontide1980 Жыл бұрын
@Decent Disc Golf yea rock climbing will definitely help you achieve some insane grip strength. I moved furniture for 18+ years, quit several years ago but I use hand grippers daily to help maintain hand and wrist strength, going all the way up to approximately 250 pounds of resistance, hoping to eventually be able to squeeze a 300 pound gripper, but not quite there yet. I feel like I have a pretty solid grip on the disc initially as I can feel the plastic bend and flex, but I can't pinpoint the exact moment but I'm certain I loosen up my grip at some point in my release. You're also right about disc selection being crucial as far as being able to throw well. I was very uneducated initially and would buy higher speed discs at first like Destroyers, Boss, Excalibur, Nuke etc. until I started learning more about what the numbers meant on the discs. Now I pretty much exclusively use midranges and fairway drivers, with Speed 8 being the highest that I use until I show drastic improvement. The Teebird3 and Leopard have become by go to discs. While I haven't exactly been crushing them, I generally end up middle of the fairway and leave myself with a reasonable approach shot.

Alright, so, I watched the same Robbie video and was intrigued. Your video prompted me to get out of my chair and actually try this. I'm new to the game and I haven't been able to practice outside as I'd like, so I've shifted to using an approach shot grip/stance rather than doing the full power grip and distance drive (because it's easier and I have far better accuracy with a marginal decrease in distance). Regardless, I thought I'd see if I could hold onto my disc while attempting a distance drive with a power grip... and I could hold it. Which means, I think, my form is awful. BUT, when I shifted to my approach shot I did get the disc to rip out of my hand and it was clearly spinning much faster and flying smoother. This was in ~20mph wind, throwing in multiple directions. This was a bit of a revelation for me because I've heard both camps discuss rip vs. release. Worthy experiment. Glad you got something good out of it. Smash.

Something I experimented with after finding I was early releasing one particular disc (Glow Beast) over and over... At release point, slackening the grip except for my thumb & index finger, so the disc has an easier job of leaving the hand, but a bit more accuracy than a full on griplock... I had some good results but got sidetracked with other things and forgot to pursue it further.

The trick you correctly point out is don't let any of that tension get up to your wrist or even worse your trap. If you squeeze and that trap tenses your am is going to lock in place and you'll give back 1.5x the distance gain in the form of sawed off follow through.

Great question, I believe there is almost always an application for any style that is comfortable to the thrower. If I'm between 80-150ft I often will open my hand on a backhand release, I'm also probably going to be using a fan grip as well...it helps me keep the power in check.

Others have touched on this, but that drill is just a step towards not letting go of your disc. Locking down on your disc like that tightens up a lot of muscles in your arm which is not optimal for distance, and can cause finger injuries. I have even heard from a rather reputable coach that if your grip would break a raw egg, it might be too tight. The key is getting the balance right between grip pressure being firm enough to hold onto the disc (I prefer to try and front load my grip more on my index and middle finger, opposite my thumb), and keeping your arm and wrist relaxed. I find that the less you round your throw, the less grip pressure is required to get the disc really cooking. You don't really need to worry about early or late releases if you are throwing in a straight line without rounding. Also, keeping your wrist neutral to closed is super important. As soon as you break that wrist open (think iron man shooting his palm lasers) you lose all your spin no matter what you do with the rest of your throw.

Wow, lots of opposing opinions. As a real noodle arm and old fart, I recently added about 20 feet to my drives by doing this exact thing (not opening my hand and letting it rip out, I am looking forward to experimenting with gripping it harder now that I have watched this). Also added another 10 to 15 feet by trying to delay the release until the disc was at maximum extension away from my spine...probably more accurate to say arm fully extended. These are not huge gains, but has allowed me to reach the circle on some 500 foot par 3s in two that I couldn't reach before. Maybe it is due to old man lack of strength, but the disc certainly does rip out of my grip when I try to hold on to it.

Thanks! I actually am inclined to disagree, but based on personal experience only. I've worked in the rock climbing industry and have been a rock climber for a significant amount of time. I dont want to "toot my own horn" but my fingers are definitely strong. If anything I believe that if you have strong fingers then they are probably used to being worked at higher loads. A proper warmup is always helpful to prevent injury but I think having strong fingers doesn't exclude you from this tip. Again this is based on my personal experience only and I do know several strong climbers that play as well. Thanks for the feedback! Maybe finger strength can be a future video!?

Woulda been cool to see you throw it. If I grip it hard it's gonna fly off to the right right into the top of a tree ha. Maybe I need to learn to throw straight well first. thx

Its a drill that really helps you learn one extreme, and then dial it back. But even if the disc flies off of the intended line it still helps you learn the right feeling of the disc ripping out of your hand

@@decentdiscgolf Right. But you could be wearing it ironically... I guess. The ideology around occupying mars is so terrifying. We are failing to maintain a planet that has spent millions of years changing to support our unique life needs. To theorize that we will be able to expand to other places once we destroy our home leads to a lack of care with the miracle of a planet we currently occupy.

Honestly it doesnt look any different than any other throw. You do hear the "snap" and the disc gets more rotation but I dont think it translates to camera very well. Bringing the back of your hand through to the 1 or 2 oclock position while maintaining firm grip is whats crucial for me. Thanks for the feedback!

I think I hear what you're saying. For me I think there is a big difference between me "knowing" the release point of my disc and me "opening my hand" to add more control to that release point.
@PurrBeat
@PurrBeat Жыл бұрын
I did this exercise from Robbie C, and I gripped my G Star Wraith hard enough to bend the disc, and it ripped out at a similar point to when I release it intentionally. If your disc is coming out at the end of your throw and going last second, you just don't have the power needed to rip it out of your hand to create that snap. That's why you always hear the snap from pros. Give it a try it seriously changed how I throw and I gained around 40 feet average distance from just that change!

You should've added in the part where Mike said that people shouldn't just go out and try this because they could injure themselves. Kinda irresponsible
@decentdiscgolf
@decentdiscgolf Жыл бұрын
Perhaps. Mike said that he wouldn't recommend putting this advice on a video and not for anyone to attempt it unsupervised. Yet Robbie still released his video and for that Im extremely grateful. How many people of the thousands that have watched Robbie's video went out and found someone who was "qualified" to "supervise" them? I believe that number is very small. Everyone is capable of their own risk management, if something causes pain then stop. There are tons of injuries that can happen in disc golf. We can roll our ankle or blow out our knee running up or standing still so I definitely lean towards people managing their own risk and making those decisions for themselves. I appreciate the feedback thank you for your comment!

In the spirit of always learning I've found that this "exercise" was helpful at teaching me what its supposed to feel like when power is injected into the disc. I didnt know what that felt like and there are lots of people that dont as well. This exercise takes that to the extreme so that we can learn to dial it back and achieve the same results. Currently my grip is loose at the start and increases during my throw to help me achieve the "hit". I never would have gotten to that point without going to this extreme, its all part of the process

Fair enough, the lens I view it through is that Im still VERY much a beginner and anything I'm learning I want to share. @@donaldmiller8727or maybe he's gripping it harder than you? I have to loosen my grip enough to get that audible snap. I don't open my hand that's ridiculous. My loosening grip is definitely letting the disc go. If you hold the disc with enough grip strength, you must let it go.
