Most shops use air impact tools when mounting tires, and grossly over-torque nuts or bolts.
@boomerguy99353 жыл бұрын
I'm a victim of this. My tire went flat in the driveway and I couldn't get the lug nuts off. So, I put a cheater bar on my wrench and twisted the lug bolt in half. Tire and half the bolt came off. That is when I had the flashback of the guy in the tire shop using an air wrench without the "torque-stick". I was so focused on him using the "star" pattern when tightening, I missed the torque - or lack, thereof - method. After buying a new lug bolt and loosening all the nuts on all the wheels with an impact wrench, I tightened them by hand with a torque wrench. I went back to the offending discount tire shop and vented, promising to never return again while spreading their reputation as far as possible. I don't know if it helped because this was before the days of SOCIAL MEDIA which I don't use, but I felt better. Lesson learned the hard way. Now I buy my tires from a trusted tire shop with a torque wrench used in a "star" pattern. It costs a little more but it is worth it.

I work at Discount Tire. We use air impacts to take off and put on wheels. When we put wheels on, we use torque sticks, that limit the max torque to 65 ft lbs. Then we lower the vehicle halfway until the tires are touching the ground, and torque each wheel.

When I came to pick up the car they told me that it wasn’t they’re fault and the threads where already stripped when they got it. I told them they’d never been replaced, that’s when they told me that “well, we’re not paying to fix the car and you can’t prove it was us” I was young and stupid, I should have sued them. The previous owner had given me all the records and I could have proved that the dealership had only performed oil changes and a tire rotation. "...then set the parking brake" Been driving automatic all life, always used parking brake in every single park, before I set the P and let off the brakes. Why strain the transmission.
@maxrx73 жыл бұрын
did you not see Scotty spinning the wheel to see if the tire was out of round? How couldn't do that with the parking brake set. The reason he set the parking brake towards the end was to tighten the lug nuts while that corner was still in the air.
@valiktoma25423 жыл бұрын
@@maxrx7 the wheel would have to out of balance to a very high degree to see shake. That part is just foolish. No way can someone spin a tire and notice the small out of balance shake. That part was for show or just in case.
@goatsemarathon66423 жыл бұрын
@@valiktoma2542 not necessarily just for show. You can listen for bearing noise and check for bubbles on the outside of the tire which could cause shaking like he was talking about in his video. Additionally, grasping the tire and checking for play will tell you if you have worn ball joints and bushings.
@valiktoma25423 жыл бұрын
@@goatsemarathon6642 Fair enough, good points. I only own subarus and AWD is second nature in my thinking. When lifted, the back or front never spins freely with little effort (yes with hand brake off).

Yeah, I try to stay away from those kind of places unless its an emergency. Years ago my grandpop went to a place called American Discount Tires and they forgot to even put the lugs on .... when my grandpop went to drive it out it out of the bay all the tires fell off :)
@dirtyaznstyle41563 жыл бұрын
Lol I did that to myself once, tightened front wheels with breaker bar while spinning them while up in the air. Forgot to torque em after I put the jack stands away. Later that night I realized what happened just before getting on the freeway about a mile from my house. Turned around to head back home and I had to stop 4 times on the way to tighten up the lug nuts. I had the breaker bar with me but unless I jacked the truck up I wasn’t going to get the wheel seated properly. What tipped me off was knowing the noise a loose wheel makes having heard it when a big CDL B truck I was in had the front wheel nuts tightened with an air ratchet setup for smaller vehicles.
@EricFortuneJr.3 жыл бұрын
@@dirtyaznstyle4156 I actually got on the interstate and eventually noticed a clicking sound everytime I applied the brakes. When I got to campus I realized that my front lug nuts were only finger tight. A friend of mine removed one with his fingers. This was at Nascar Tech so we torqued them back down and I haven't been to Discount Tire Co. since. That was in 2009.
