Train horse to stop pawing! What causes pawing? How can you treat the cause and not just the symptom?

I love that you focused on identifying the root cause of the issue and didn’t settle for masking the symptoms (punishing the pawing). At my boarding barn the trainer and other boarders regularly reprimand horses for pawing and one staff person said to my horse (who was a bit anxious while getting a bath) “Yeah, get mad!” It breaks my heart to hear/see this kind of response to horses. I’m also ashamed to say that I sometimes let myself fall prey to perceived peer pressure in how I handle pawing behavior. And when I do that, I always feel gross. You are a wonderful breath of fresh air and I’m so thrilled that you’re sharing your insights with all of us. Thank you! I feel secure in my plan to help resolve the tension/anxiety that leads to the pawing and help teach my mare how to feel calm in the situations where I want her to be able to stand and wait. 💓

My horse has started pawing under saddle when i ask her to move or turn. she could be walking around fine and then if we stop for a minute to graze or just sit there and when i ask her to walk she will start pawing and won’t move. I can’t figure out what she could be anxious from?

Don't know if this is related, but the scared high head thing made me think of my lovely fjord when I was a teen. He was a truly relaxed boy, and the one time he showed he was scared to go a specific way into the forest, I felt I could actually believe what he was sniffing might be something bad, so we turned back pretty fast since it was so unlike him to do that. There was probably a big moose or something that way, and I did not wanna say hello to that. Sometimes there might be a real reason the head is high, just something to think about.

Hi Ivy, What do you think about these "patience poles" that some trainers use? The horse can move around, but does this relieve the anxiety since nobody is there to help calm the horse or to give food? Never heard of such a thing years ago.

This adds stress to the horse. Some people are fine with that. I want to train a horse in the least stressful circumstances possible.

I'm with you.. I don't know where they get these new ideas! Another idea I don't understand is "moving the feet!" No matter what the horse does that is perceived as "disrespectful" or wrong, they move the feet. I don't get the connection. I saw a video where some trainer was trying to get the horse to stand at the mounting block, and every time the horse moved he made it go round and round. This went on during the whole video. The horse kept moving and kept getting its feet moved. It ended up somewhat better. I suppose it was tired? Horses are smart, so I suppose they eventually learn no matter what you do.@@IvyS

You didn’t give any real solutions to fixing the problem. Get him to relax how? He’s anxious, showing me he is anxious, now what do I do?

My 2 SSH mares do too. Thats the only time they paw . They eat separately, noone is able to steal their food. But they do it every time.

A little food anxiety is better than food aggressive! No harm, anyway. Can you spread the food out, so they have to concentrate more on eating it? Maybe a trough would be better.@@aprilmiles2753

My baby colt 6 months paws when he eats his food. He just moved to my farm from where he was born. I’m sure it is anxiety. What can I do to ease him and stop the pawing?
