It's disheartening how often I tell someone about the campaign and they immediately tell me they don't support it because of "they can't host servers forever" or "studios should retain IP rights" or "they can't leak server software because anticheat" and whatnot. And then I link them the FAQ and they quickly change their minds. So much misinformation out there. Good luck everyone.
@crazyinsane50017 сағат бұрын
Well it's very specifically because one KZbinr went off on spreading misinformation, these *specific* pieces of misinformation, because they had a vested interest in Rivals of Aether 2, a game that's reliant on a central server so the devs can just take the money and run one day. Same guy also turned out to slide into the DMs of kids to solicit them for erotic art, knowing full-well they were minors.

@ On top of that, its kinda funny to see that the early access game they are developing themselves, HeartBound, isn't being worked on. To quote the top review: "Honestly, I cannot recommend this game right now. I had originally bought this to support the dev as I had followed his streams, and he was working on it fairly consistently, or so it seemed. The only dev update this year for this game was a meme post for April fools. This at the time may have been funny, but now seems pretty out of touch since it was the only 2024 update. Now, he barely works on it, if at all and appears to have changed professions somewhere along the line to a full time streamer. The fact that there are multiple threads in the HeartBound reddit asking if this game is a scam should be a massive warning sign" or another one: "Hasn't gotten a single update in a full year. Very much been abandoned by it's creator" or my fav: "Similar to a mana gem, this game goes neglected. The only update in 2024 was an April fools patch."

One thing to bear in mind Ross is that the first petition was a petition to the old Conservative Party government and this petition is a petition to the new Labour Party government. So it's not "the UK government" - it's a totally different Prime Minister, different Ministers and different MPs who have the majority. You still might not win, but any pushback you got before does not apply to whoever responds to this petition. Try to reach out to British gaming magazines and tech TV shows. I think the BBC has something called BBC Click. If you can get stories into the specialist press and the petition gets big enough, you might hit the mainstream media and get approached to do a TV interview.

UK People PLEASE push this! The Canadian federal petition fell through, the answer was basically "This isn't our problem, take it up on a provincial level" which makes no sense to me other than a diversion/refusal tactic. To anyone thinking that challenging the industry won't affect things, remember Ubisoft explicitly announced to the public that they'll work on offline modes for the last two Crew games, in response to the EU Initiative campaign. And that campaign isn't over yet. We CAN scare corrupt publishers into keeping games alive. We just need to keep pushing it.

More significantly than two games saved, it's a sign that Ubisoft is concerned about the initiative might succeed and bar them from killing more games in the future. I have concerns about the rewording shifting attention away from the deliberate nature of the kill switches.

Signed. Even if they side with the enemy, that just means it's going to be an even fight, with ample opportunity for trophies. Also, I'd bet good money on the notion that if TotalBiscuit was still with us, he would've been signal-boosting Stop Killing Games with a fervour strong enough to split himself in half. Hell, one time he laughed so hard that his guts came out, and still kept streaming Superfight.

On that note, I wonder how to get Yahtzee made aware of this.

Guild wars dropped support for windows xp a month ago , as much as i appreciate them up and still going 19 +years later i don't appreciate them breaking support on the operating system their code was originally built on

No one should be using a Windows XP machine connected to the internet in 2025.

That is a shockingly long support life for an already end of life platform with few active users.

8:17 God, its so nice to have a angle where one can say the UK isn't completely hopeless. It's been rough going.

Signed. My main concern beyond the government ignoring it is that they government has committed a lot of legislative time to pass their legislation - not a criticism, they won an election promising some fairly complicated laws to be passed - so I don't know if they'll be getting round to this in this Parliamentary cycle.

I strongly doubt this mess of a country will help but I signed again anyway!

I'm signature 3,905 _Hopefully_ this petition actually does something useful, although I'm still not holding my breath The current government (from the little I've heard of them doing anything tbh) isn't much better than the previous one - but, we'll see...

Yep thought of that too. But its in a way even more niche than video games. If this happened with dishwashers or televisions people would burn cities. (Not like we have great consumer rights with those either but at least they dont shut them off from a central server)

@@Smrda1312 Between Smart TVs and the rise of Monolithic ISP/CABLE/Entertainment providers this may well happen in the near dystopian future.

And before that, Google bought out some smart-home device company just to shut it down because they were competing with the one Google was selling, and it resulted in basically bricking everyone's systems.

I will forever miss battleborn
@ehhorve85717 сағат бұрын
boy, do I have news for you! copied from @shumo7096 on 'games you can't buy anymore 3': You're kinda wrong about the "end of Battleborn" ! It is true that the game is no longer playable multiplayer as even private "servers"(they were just private lobbies) need gearbox servers to be online...but there still is a community that is active for it. The "official" (not really, was just shared by gearbox but not made by them) Battleborn server is active and...there's a "mod" called ReBorn that allows people to play through the story by bypassing the game's online checks, and the mod's creator ( Gweg 🙏) has plans to add coop and multiplayer in the future. The game may be dead but...the community's still alive and trying!
