I'm an American, and I can't believe someone would teach that "Happy 18 years old" is correct English with that much confidence. That's just not something any native English speaker I know would ever say. It sucks because people go to these videos to try to improve themselves. I watch similar videos for French and I put my trust in those people to guide me and help me become a better French speaker. If they teach a phrase, I believe them.

I live in the states for 20 years now and never ever have I heard "happy 18 years old" or "happy 18" or "happy + [any other age]". It's always "happy birthday". And by always I mean 100%.

@@nekto34 You might hear "Happy 18th birthday!" or even sometimes just "Happy 18th!" But you always have the th at the end if you say it like that, and it's not nearly as common as just plain old happy birthday.

I couldn't believe how bad her mistakes were. I stumbled on this video and just assumed it would be pedantry, but saying stuff like 'This is peeler', 'Happy 16 years old', 'How is is called?' and other obvious Russian-influenced mistakes is unacceptable for someone making money from 'teaching' English

What people don't seem to understand is that Marina is not your average non-native english speaker who makes mistakes, she presents herself (as far as I understand) as a teacher, and gives tips on pronunciation and grammar which clearly she hasn't completely mastered. Moreover she creates courses!!! So I understand why you guys made the videos correcting her mistakes and honestly I appreciate it.

Well, thank you for introducing me Marina - such a charismatic girl! Not to be biased for no reason, I have had a quick look through some lessons, and though I am a fluent English speaker, I have found some new interesting expressions for me. I also observed some minor errors, like comma missing before too, for instance. What can I say: 1. Marina is not making her "courses" or writing the phrases for the dialogues, etc. The team and outsourced people do this. It is obvious. She is a media person, a face to attract. 2. Any language book issued not by natives formally educated in the field will have errors and drawbacks. I have seen plenty of them, none was perfect. However, I cannot say they were useless. One should be prepared to take such books and courses with a pinch of sault. Next, learning language is possible only through multiple sources, also listening to different native and non-native speakers. If you want to be sure, learn Oxford and Cambridge courses, i.e, those from the country of origin. Any other books and courses are done at best by their publishers, esp. non-natives. This is how English is taught in universities abroad - using Oxford and Cambridge books and thoroughly verified local books which still contain some deficiencies. What I saw here was the attempt by a course maker to put down the competitor. Yes, Marina is not perfect and not a native speaker. I would not recommend her courses as a training for entering university or passing TOEFL. But for fun and practice in conversational and listening skills, why not? I would not use it for teaching kids in classes without previous checking. But in general there are lots of cool exercises to use even for teachers.

@LittlePenguinHouse Professional doesn't mean perfect. Especially in countries where English isn't spoken by the majority of the population. Russia is no Europe. I don't know the exact statistics for this, but from my own experience living in Moscow and St.Petersburg, there's less than 1% of teachers, profs and tutors who have C2. C1 is already considered to be a God's gift or something. Most of the school teachers have B1-B2. But I'd say that even B2 is becoming rare. Don't forget that the main point of teaching a language is to make a person speak that language. You don't need to be perfect in order to do that. That's why I'd say almost 100% of English teachers in Russia (who cares) continue learning the language while teaching it. And there's nothing wrong with that.

As a non-native English tutor myself, I sometimes make mistakes when I speak. Fortunately, I almost always notice them and use my mistakes as an exercise to explain what was wrong. Nobody is perfect, but when you teach someone how to speak, there's a high risk that your occasional slip of the tongue will stay with them forever. That's why I highly appreciate Liza and Kevin's videos. Watching their analysis of Marina's mistakes helps me check whether I make similar errors or not, and reminds me to be more careful with my use of articles and pronounciation.

I've noticed that many Russian teachers of English write/type in a peculiar way that's not typical for a native speaker. It's as if you guys try too hard. A native speaker wouldn't really say "fortunately," in a KZbin comment 😅 it sounds more appropriate for an essay than a comment
@LittlePenguinHouse
@LittlePenguinHouse 10 ай бұрын
Also your use of the word "error" sounds a bit odd to me? "Mistakes" would've been more appropriate. I think the word error is more formal than "mistake". The latter is accidental rather than due to the lack of judgement
@lxtatar7773
@lxtatar7773 9 ай бұрын
@@LittlePenguinHouse I'm not a teacher but I speak Russian as a native language and English as a second language, so I'd like to clarify. It's definitely not about "trying too hard". You should keep in mind that there are sooo many factors that can influence your second/third/... language. The word "fortunately" is, perhaps, less formal in Russian than in English - I wouldn't hestitate to use it a youtube comment. We non-native speakers do sound a bit unnatural from time to time - well, actually, quite often - and that's perfectly ok. The only way to avoid mistakes is to say nothing at all. I'd also like to point out that you can't really speak for all native English speakers. English is so diverse! You can learn it for years and read books and have conversations and work in English - and still have no clue what Nicki Minaj raps about! 😅
@ivanivan5511

@@LittlePenguinHouse "Hopefully" sounds more natural, right? Anyways, those odd vocabs probably come from textbooks. I'm from Argentina, we learn English since the age of 8-9 in school and the level is toooo bad really, it's a bit far from reality. There are many transparent words in between English and other Indo-european languages, so people might use them in a wrong context like "error"; we have the same word in Spanish and it isn't formal, so you might see many Spanish speakers saying "error" when "mistake" sounds more natural.

I'm a native speaker of 🇬🇧 English. Thank you for making this video. I can't believe some of these people are making so much money teaching "English", when they're unable to speak it correctly themselves. You have an accent, but you also have prefect pronunciation. Having a foreign accent does not mean that one has to have bad pronunciation. You also have perfect grammar, and are an excellent teacher. Lastly, I found your video highly entertaining, so I've subscribed (even though I don't need any help with my English). 😊 Good luck in your future endeavours.

I have no idea why Hadar felt the need to mention the gender and race of the native speaker (Kevin) correcting mistakes that another English teacher (Marina) was making, and I am glad you called her on it. Marina is not a victim, she is a businesswoman selling a product on KZbin, and that product has some serious defects. The victims here are Marina's students, who may not know that what they are learning is incorrect. Marina does not just make mistakes, she makes a lot of serious mistakes and she drills her students on them (and charges them money for it). I would actually avoid her classes now that I have listened to her. Making mistakes is fine, teaching mistakes for profit is bad.

As a non-native English teacher, I've spent hours doing research for some of my classes (especially pronunciation), and yes, I still forget things, and I still mispronounce things, however, whenever I'm not sure about something, I simply tell my students "Hey, let me look it up and I'll get back to you with a better answer". We all have a responsibility to double-check what we teach, and even if my English is very fluent, I still don't know everything, and so it'd be pretty irresponsible from my part to pretend everything I say is correct. I hope she takes this as an opportunity to improve her own teaching, and all of us teachers, can take this as a lesson. None of us is perfect, and we're not supposed to be, but we have a responsibility when we teach something, and if we're not willing to do our research or at least accept our mistakes, then are we really teachers?

There's a tendency to always have someone who can make any arguments in defense of mediocrity, no matter how bad it gets. In Russian language we have a special word for people like Marina - “инфоцыгане”, literally translated as “info-gypsies” or more conceptually “cyber-gypsies”. While it sounds tough and quite racist it very well describes that kind of persons - a kind of people that use extremely agressive marketing strategies to sell stuff online and very annoying. they not always very competent in what they talking about, but very confident about it. The main thing that they do nowadays is sell online-courses about literally anything: how to become rich, how to invest in crypto, how to speak English well, how to become a software developer in 3 months etc etc. Anything that takes very little effort to create and can easily be sold with many thousands percent profit. Usually this people set ridiculously expensive prices for their online-courses, because they spend up to 50% budget to the marketing, to attract more and more people that easily trust shady strangers. Inside thier online-courses is an information that can be found in Google search response on the first page, just pronounced by the mouths of everyone’s favorite bloggers. Even more ridiculous is that they often times they don’t even create this courses themselves, they hire others for a very small share of their profit. And sometimes they gather groups, and sell them courses that are not even exist yet, so when people start their lessons, only like first 20% of all lessons are created and uploaded, and the rest they create on the go. It is not rare when they tell a complete unchecked and simply incompetent nonsense, but a lot of people in Russia, unfortunately lack the right amount of critical thinking and easy buy any bs if it is told by some charismatic blogger. I do realize that this trend is international, but it seems really really bad in russian speaking communities. I can suggest that this is because there are very few working social elevators here and for some people who can deal and live with conscience like this it is a way for better life, but at what cost? I’m not an expert in English by any means (as you have already noticed probably lol), and don’t really know a lot about Marina as well, but I have seen a lot of examples of people like her in other areas that I have expertise about (like software engineering), and videos like this are often made because they have to keep their audience “warm”, always remind about themselves, always remind about their courses. What subject is better for that than “10 facts about…”, or “You tell this wrong…” etc.
