A guide explaining how to improve at Tekken by taking your mind away from character specifics and returning to the basics. This guide should help you out no matter who you play, and should easily allow you to transfer over skills to any character.

I apologize if the mic volume is a bit low. Still trying to figure that out. Also, I hope this concept makes sense. If ya'll would like a more in-depth video explaining how poking, keepout, and rushdown interact with each other, let me know in the comments!

Please make an extra video. I was so glad that you added Kaz in the scene because he's my main. I tend to play Tekken with my fightstick through moves that 'feel' good using like hellsweeps and db4s. I need a proper guide on how to play him. Hoping for a Kazuya guide sooner or later. Thank you!

Very rarely do I find a video that levels you up like this one. This is GOLD. Great video. I feel like this type of general/fundamental Tekken approach will carry you further than gimmicks ever will.

This video is something that needs to be circulated a lot. This is great material and something that I am beginning to touch base on you see it and hear about it often but it never really gets explained the way you have thank you.

In general, aside from getting good at fundamentals and switching up playstyle in sets, my main way of improving at my rank (Tekken King) has been simply picking up other characters and learning them extensively. It's tough, but once you play a character, beating them becomes infinitely easier if you're good at recognising move's weaknesses.

Same here. If I struggle against a character, I’ll pick them up and start using them.

While general knowledge will carry you very far if your fundamentals are that good, its also about having enough game time to grind specific situations. I've taken multiple characters to purple ranks, and all of them had different ws launchers, different stances, gameplans, etc. It definitely takes a while to drill those in, or you have some legacy knowledge and intuition. Its also about having fun with the character you are playing. A pro player might beat anyone with just df1 and a low poke, but that doesn't mean they "played the character". Good video!

I thoroughly enjoyed this video and feel this would improve anyone's fundamentals in any fighting game, not just Tekken. Thank you.

I like this vid.. I was def always rush down and it got me blasted 80% of the time.. I’ll even go as far as to say that the reason why most ppl get stuck and frustrated at blue ranks is because everyone is playing rushdown trying to steal their turn back.. not many players consider poking or keep out thus ignoring the plethora of opportunities the player actually has to win.. this would also explain why the game boosts other character’s rank when your main reaches a certain point: the game knows that you’ve accumulated enough fundamental knowledge that’ll just transfer to different characters so if you’re a GoD you might as well be sent to fujin with the other characters.. solid explanation bro 💯

Thanks so much! I appreciate the simplification greatly since this game has so many interactions and moves so fast. It’s just decision decision decision so I’m glad for a simplified way of thinking of what’s happening on screen ✌🏾

I managed to realise a lot of this myself over the last few months of play. The thing I'm struggling with now is the "learning". I apply the pokes, see my opponent respond, but I often fail to internalise the learning or know how to interpret the information I'm given. Feels like an experience barrier but I'm still learning so only upwards I guess

Good video dude and a huge concept that people need to drill in. There is a lot of "oh my gosh that player is so carried by *insert anyone*" mindset in people. Instead that mindset is really "I'm held back by my lack of knowledge in this matchup". I have two Tekken Gods now and working on my third, and I have about 5 characters at Raijin/Kishin. I feel like I can take basically any character, learn a simple BnB combo/wall combo, and throw... heck the normal and 1+2 throwgame is universal anyways so you don't even HAVE to learn that to win usually, 1 armor move and 1 panic move, and boom... Can body pretty much anyone that isn't a Tekken king or higher main pretty easily. And yea they will be there on their end thinking "omg this guy barely knows how to play his character, he is just doing stuff" Yea... but no, haha. Simplify the game, people. Then build on top of it. Learning your character specific stuff will help you in those closeout situations and in helping make sure you don't give your opponents those additional chances, but more often than not, someone isn't losing a set bc of one interaction. It was the whole picture that wasn't clear yet.

Idk about practicing in QM. Ranked feels easier tbh. Since QM just pairs you with much higher level opponents once you get past 200k prowess.

Imo, QM is the best way to improve because of the fact you do get paired with higher levels and that's how you get solidified in every department you're lacking. Just challenging yourself makes you more engaged on getting better.

@Vulcantrixtr027 Depends if skill difference is too high, such that they can pilot their character while you are still learning yours, then not so much.
