it took me a few months to understand point 2 in that what's the point in taking a photo everyone already has when you can simply look at theirs

Took me a while too! I think it's fine to some degree... but when chasing this over and over, certainly your growth will become much slower eventually.

I disagree a bit with mistake #2. As a beginner, I like to replicate shots I like and in doing so I study how they got the shot. Then after I can go around seeing how I can do things differently. I can't think outside the box if I don't even know what the box is. I highly agree with studying photography. Like any craft, instinct and feelings can only get one so far. I only recently started looking at what books I can get. I'm currently reading The Photographer's Eye by Michael Freeman and Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. I want to look at photobooks though but don't know where to start. Do you have any recommendations?

Thanks for sharing! I don't disagree with you there so perhaps I didn't explain this well enough! Drawing inspiration from other photos is perfectly fine - this is why studying photography books etc is so great. Going out and trying to replicate things is a great way to start, naturally as you learn you put your own spin on things. The mistake I mention was more around purely chasing more these insta famous type photos and locations not really experimenting much outside this. Something I fell into and certainly see still see a lot of people do! That's awesome around the photobooks - many of the books I have are on street photography - eg photographers like Alex Webb, Saul Leiter and Ernst Haas. But Magnum Contact Sheets is one I really love atm. But studying specific photographers can be really interesting, seeing how their work progresses - but that can really depend on your interests in photography!

Nice video! Im a bew sub and I love your style. Do you have or will you do any video where you explain how you look for the shot in each situation? Like going around and seeing some light, "that light's nice because..." and "I'll do this/that because...", things like these?

@@RiccardoGabarriniKazeatari Welcome and thank you so much! I did a recent one talking about things I look out for in street photography (2 videos ago). A bit more general things rather than explaining each specific shot. But it’s something I’d certainly like to do more of so thanks for asking 🙏

Loving the vids. I'm seriously considering purchasing the RF50mm 1.2 for my Japan trip next year. Do you find its weight an issue at all?
@TKNORTH

Thanks so much!! It's a seriously great lens, but the weight can definitely be a bit of an issue at times. It's more if I'm carrying around other lenses for the day you start to really notice it. I haven't tried the new 50mm f1.4 but I think this is worth considering! Certainly smaller / lighter and 1.4 can be more than enough in a lot of situations!

@@TKNORTH sadly no definite info on when stores in Japan will stock up on the RF 50mm F1.4L this December. They all say late December. I was hoping to get one for the Philippine Festival.

Oh that's unfortunate! I'd really like to try it though, perhaps even swap from the 1.2. But undecided 🤔

@@TKNORTH I'm not getting any younger, the weight and size of the 1.2 is a deal breaker for me. Still my fingers are crossed, in the US they already have a release date on December 12. By some stroke of luck I hope Japan will release the 1.4 on the same day. hahaha
