They did a study. They sent identical resumes to a variety of companies, with different names on the top. Identical resumes. But some had names that are associated with the Black urban community. The others, same reume, had names thought of as White - your Jennys and Sallys. Exact same resume. And the companies overwhelmingly showed interest in interviewing the candidates with the White sounding names - even though all applicants had the exact same qualifications. Of course it's wrong and I don't think the bias on the part of these HR personell was purposeful - but that really makes it worse in a way. If it was purposeful, it could be addressed and remedied. But it's a societal bias that so many people probably don't even realize they have. Which makes it harder to get rid of. It is real and it is there and it is wrong. All names have connotations that parents should be aware of. You want your daughter to become a doctor or lawyer, you name her Katherine, not Bubbles. Some names sound strong, some sound intelligent, some sound sporty, some sound weak, some sound effeminate, some sound fat. I had a friend named Gordon and people called him Gordo. He was tall and thin. But I always thought what if he was a fat kid growing up. Gordo means fat in Spanish. That would have been hell for him. I knew someone with the last name Bekker, and I thought it was a cool name, so I thought if I had a son, I would name him Bekker. But then right away, it rhymes with Pecker - I mean, here we are getting into sexual connotations, not socio-economic connotations. But the point is similar - parents need to give some thought to what that name holds in store for the child. You just don't name your daughter Mulva.

Gwyneth Paltrow named her daughter Apple. She has the $$$, prestige and influence to ensure that her child's name will not be a hindrance to her. Us poor folks can't do that! 😉😁
