Librarian here!!! Great tips on the library 😊 If the branch you go to doesn't have what you're seeking, ask if another one in the county has it or use the inter-library-loan system. This is when you get something from another library not in your area. This could be another county, a college, an archive, or even a different state- like borrowing from the New York Public Library when you are in another state. Disclaimer: it might take some time to get to you, so if you're not in a hurry, I would definitely use this perk! Having a library card will open the world to you 😊

I do the cart trick as well! It gets the window-shopping addiction out of my system. Sometimes I have some stuff in it for MONTHS and then eventually I get bored of the item (like I would have if I had gotten it back then) and I remove it. This way I pretend I own it, and I get to get bored of it AND save money at the same time.

One tip that I tried and worked for me earlier was to take pictures of my makeup collection in my phone. I created a makeup folder and within that I had one for eyeshadows, for example. I opened every palette I owned and clicked a picture of it. Now next time when I was lying in bed watching Instagram or KZbin and felt attracted to an eyeshadow I saw someone use, I went into my photo folder to see if I already have a similar shade. Sure enough , literally similar shade was already there and I didn’t even remember. Same with blush. This works very well and stops impulsive buys thinking if I buy this last item it will complete my collection . No item is ever a last item and there’s no such thing as completing a collection.

My life has changed drastically over the last year so I’ve decided to only buy things that I need or if I spend money it’s discounted or I have a coupon with cashback. With the fires in Cali, even though I’m on the east coast, I had the realization that a natural disaster can happen and we could lose everything and most of what I have wouldn’t be able to be replaced. But while I have the things I have I’ll use them and not rebuy right away because I probably have something similar. And I’m going to try to shop in store more because online shopping is too convenient and encourages overbuying as a way to pass the time as if it’s a hobby.
@20thcenturyrelic14 күн бұрын
I also find this to be the case with shopping on line - it's hard for me to not overbuy.

What a lightbulb moment "don't declutter first"! 2025 is a no buy for clothes, skincare, and makeup. But I see now why I should declutter at the end of 2025 and not the beginning! THANK YOU!!! 💝
@lmullens7514 күн бұрын
I agree! I always feel proud when I declutter, but when I reorganize and just look through what I have, I’m like - wow, I haven’t even used xyz… 🤦♀️ Ironically, I was tossing expired/dried up stuff last night & had a stash to give away… maybe I put it away and just think one more time about them.

These are such great goals to shoot for!! I have finally reached the point that I don't buy any new makeup unless I need to replace something. And, I don't replace it if I have something in my drawer that I can use instead. It took me a while to get to this point, but you can do it!!

Another benefit of not decluttering - Instead I keep the makeup I think I won’t use in a separate simple makeup bag. Invariably something I didn’t like 6 months or 12 months ago, I feel attracted to try again when I see someone on the internet using it maybe. I can go back into my stash and pick something which now feels like new.

Okay I feel you so much on the wearing things backwards point tho!!! I have multiple sleeveless tops that I haven't felt quite comfortable wearing bc they are quite low-cut and are becoming looser with time, and since I don't wear a bra I feel a little odd about wearing them (don't want my boobs to fall out every time i slightly incline my torso). However last summer i had the brilliant idea to just wear them backwards, and it worked well with most of them, so now I have a bunch of "new" tops with quite a high neck and a really nice low-cut back

I have always been the queen of filling my cart online and then not buying. 😂 I get the thrill of “shopping”, but don’t have to spend money. I’m going to make a wishlist of beauty items I want to buy this year and if I still want them by Black Friday, I may buy them once they are on sale. I also LOVE the library! I never buy books anymore! I also love visiting little libraries around me and then returning the books when I’m finished.

I 10000% am with you on not decluttering, but maybe from a somewhat different standpoint? Personal preferences and trends are constantly shifting. If something doesn’t expire and you have the room for it, it can be really nice to keep it and be able to shop your stash or shop your wardrobe later. I’ve found things in my closet from ages ago that I seriously wanted to declutter, but are actually my style now, and it has been so awesome to not have to go out and buy them. I also think we get used to having a certain amount of stuff around and can get anxious about the perceived lack of options and feel more compelled to shop when we declutter. Backups are a trap, but using what you already have is the most budget and eco-friendly thing to do, so it isn’t a bad idea to keep some things around if you already have them.

For your "wait" tip, I do this all the time, especially with more expensive items. There are purchases I've sat on (and some I'm still sitting on) for *years* until I'm absolutely certain that I want to get it. There are other items that look interesting, I bookmark them, go back to them in a couple of months, and realized that I don't actually want. The end result is that I regret very few of the larger purchases that I've made.

I love to sew, and my machine needs to go to the shop for a refresh. I found out that our library has a very nice sewing machine that can be checked out!! As for makeup, I am so happy to say that I have finally come to the place where I do not buy anything new unless I need to replace something. For "wants," they go on my wish list, and I will get them as gifts throughout the year! I also will put some items in the "save for later" list, and will wait until I have rewards points or get a gift card. I have $20 in Kohl's cash from buying gifts for my grandchildren, and I might use this, unless I need to buy a birthday gift!

4:21 THIS IS WHAT I’VE BEEN SAYINGGGG As someone still experimenting and going through many changing needs, I would be getting rid of so much of my past purchases just because it wasn’t perfect for my present self - but there could have been ways to make it work or have a better understanding of what I should look for when I replace this product after I’ve used it up. Can you imagine discarding every foundation that looks off on you when you have olive skin in THIS beauty industry?! That’s just burning cash when it’s so, so hard to get good shade matches to begin with.

I love the tip on filling and abandoning carts -- it's what I do all the time too, and the other side bonus (but again requires having will power to not just use it an excuse to fall back into the temptations of overspending/overconsumption) is that a lot of websites will then see that you've abandoned your cart and then offer you an extra discount to come back and actually purchase them. I like to add things to cart and let them sit for at least a week or two to see if I'm still interested in buying them or not, and to see if some sort of abandoned cart offer will come through -- if I've forgotten about my cart / the products then it's a sign to me it was probably an impulse almost-buy, but if I've still been thinking about them the whole time then that's usually a sign that I can give myself permission to commit to the purchase

I completely agree with your first point about decluttering! I declutter really often, BUT instead of giving or throwing away the decluttered items, I simply put them in a bag and somewhere away. Like in an empty suitcase somewhere on top of my closet. The hen in about 6 months I look at the items again. More often than not I get excited to see something and actually want to use it again. Excellent video! So many good tips thank you. I'm fair in the winter and medium in the summer, so I divide my make up into 2 collections. Right now my summer set is boxed up in my closet. It's so fun to get everything back out when the seasons change. Last summer I had purchased the catrice rose corrector for under eye circles. It was way too emolient for my oily skin then. I put it in my winter collection box and pulled it out recently. I still didn't like how it looked on me with makeup and was trying to figure out a way to use it without declutering. Now I'm using it as an eye cream instead to provide moisture when I am not wearing makeup. I don't plan to repurchase but I'm really happy to get use out of it, not have to declutter it, and not waste my money.

Two of my best strategies are 1. focusing on using what you have first and trying to buy things for long term use (even if you won't keep using something for whatever you are buying it for, is it the kind of thing that you can easily use in another way?), and 2. keeping track of every cent that you spend (taxes and shipping and international transaction fees included) on a spreadsheet that adds everything up as you add things to it, you can easily see what you've already spent and put things that you're thinking of buying on there to see what they add up to, and it makes you really conscious of how many purchases you're making

I've found that if I hold on to some beauty or skincare item that I don't really want to use anymore, I will eventually find a use for it down the road. When I think I want something, I think about if I actually need it, & then I walk away from it. Most of the time, I don't go back to it. If I go back to it 3-4 times, then I'll get it - because clearly,, it's something I actually want & not an impulse buy. Oh, & for things outside of beauty & bath items, buy used if at all possible. Instead of getting a new cast iron skillet, go to antique shops or flea markets & get an old one instead. Yeah, you might have to clean it up, but you might get one of better quality as well. I buy used books all the time, instead of buying them new.
