Hi Kevin. To me, you're a great English teacher. However, in this context, "take" is used to refer to the amount of effort required to do something. The phrase "make an effort" would imply actively trying or exerting energy, but in this case, she's referring to the effort needed, so "take" I think is the correct choice.

While achieving English fluency as a non-native speaker is commendable, teaching the language effectively requires expertise typically found in native speakers. Either defer to experienced native speakers for teaching roles, or be transparent that your classes focus on conversational skills, acknowledging inevitable mistakes. He is not nitpicking. Correct pronunciation is crucial for those aiming to reach the advanced level and sound as close as possible to native speakers. The problem is that she teaches English as being portrayed as a "native" speaker which is obviously wrong. That's surely okay to make mistakes but if you teach, at least, you should double check your script. And what's more, she doesn't learn from her own mistakes. She could have improved her.
@Jasmin-yf6nt21 сағат бұрын
@lamaxx8562 The joke‘s on you here-Kevin specifically states at the beginning of his videos that he teaches American English, not Australian, New Zealand, or South African accents. While accents in the U.S. can vary slightly by region, there are still standard pronunciation rules that help learners sound more natural in American English. The word expansion is pronounced with a long ‘A’ sound, like ex-PAN-shun. Mispronouncing it as ex-PEN-shun or something similar might not just sound off-it can also create confusion in certain contexts, especially for advanced learners aiming for fluency and clarity.

This nitpicking has become outrightly ridiculous. I can't even count how many of these corrections are unnecessary. I think you've already pointed out all there is to really correct in Marina's videos. Now you're mostly nitpicking very negligible or even subjective things. No one speaks perfect English all the time, not even native speakers.
@fredylopez24776 сағат бұрын
Perfection doesn't exist in this world my friend BUT if not even natives don't speak perfectly, but I don't believe that, just imagine the non-native speakers who claim to be English teachers just because they speak it. There's a big difference between being a native who teaches his/her mother tongue AND being a non-native who thinks he/she/ can teach it just because they speak it
@polymathsmart3361Сағат бұрын
@@fredylopez2477 Well, anyone can teach English as long as they know their onions. At this time in history, no one gets to gatekeep the language. It's an international language now - the pretty much official language of the world. So, I'm not going to argue with you regarding if Marina thinks she can teach just because she can speak the language. What I'm interested in here are the mistakes being corrected. Many of these corrections are unnecessary or just plain stupid. Everything she says is being nitpicked, not just what she is teaching. That's what I have a problem with. We all make little mistakes regularly when talking. That's normal. The "expansion" and "whatever" corrections were just plain stupid. When she said these words, I heard and understood them clearly and didn't think anything else. I only started reconsidering after he started nitpicking them. The truth is no one has perfect pronunciation. In the US alone, there are quite a number of different native accents. So, as long as you're very close to what might be referred to as the general standard, you're good. Some of the things nitpicked aren't even wrong. It's pathetic at this point.

All I can say is that non-native English speakers shouldn't teach a language which ain't their mother tongue and don't master, they've got to teach their mother tongue. The fact of speaking a foreign language doesn't mean you can teach it correctly, on the contrary, you create more confusion. I'm not a native speaker, I'm a non native but I can teach English as far as my knowleddge goes, I don't pretend to be a know-it--all and arrogant just because I speak, understand, write and read English
@ПолинаМоргачева6 сағат бұрын
You are literally contradicting yourself. You say that a non-native speaker cannot teach English, but at the same time, you say that you are a non-native speaker, yet you can teach at the level you possess. Teaching should be done by a TEACHER. Whether they are a native speaker or not is not as important. The main thing is that your level is significantly higher than that of your students.
