Have you tried learning the formula? As bass player I started with shapes but I was the same way. Then I learned the major and minor formula and it was so much easier. Major is; Root - T - T - ST - T - T - T - ST. T= Tone, ST = Semi- tone. Or whole step and half step. After learning, that I was able to play the entire fretboard

Cool, this is what I've been learning lately. For anyone interested this is a good place to start. There's 5 unique scales that have 7 modes, that make up most well known and exotic scales. 7 modes just means 7 different '3 note per string' scale positions as Bernth showed. It becomes that mode when you make the first note of that shape the root note, but it's also a great way to remember 35 different scales. 1. Natural minor, which is Aeolian 2. The harmonic minor 3. Melodic minor 4. Byzantine, which includes Hungarian minor. My personal favourite. 5. Neopolitan

I noticed that after 15 years of guitar playing. When I stopped to look at modes as "phrigian is the 3rd shape of the natural major scale" and started to look as "a scale" over a matching harmony. I could understand the relationship of the altered intervals over the chord and that made all the difference!

Dude, I'm looking for the exact same thing. I had no idea what he was talking about, except for new scales. Also all of the scales he presets are ont he same 5 frets, while the original scale goes through all frets, so wouldn't it be more advantageous to practice the whole scale learning positions accross the whole board instead of just the same 5 frets?

The thing is : We have to know what our alterations of our A scale are. So our first scale is A Harmonic minor A - B - C - D - E - F - G# or 1 - 2 - b3 - 4 - 5 - b6 - 7. This one is straight forward when he explains it. We start on A to play A harmonic minor. I'll call ''recipes'' the numbering. We can understand these ''recipes'' when we know what are the alterations in our A major scale (which are F#-C#-G#) Whats confusing is that he doesnt speaks about those alterations in our A Major scale. The ''recipes'' are linked to the alterations (natural, b, #) in our Major scale to understand how our ''recipes'' impacts our notes. in those recipes, numbers may be glued to a ''b'' b = half-step down. It does NOT, I REPEAT, it does NOT imply that it becomes a flat note. It only means that our note is a half-step down. Ex : 3 = C# b3 = C When playing Locrian 6, he STILL starts from A to encourage us to know every scale with their ''recipes'' Which for this one is 1 - b2 - b3 - 4 - b5 - 6 - b7 or A - Bb - C - D - Eb - F# - G. So, A Major is : A - B - C# - D - E - F# - G# Locrian 6 notes are A - Bb - C - D- Eb - F# - G The recipe 1- b2 - b3 - 4 - b5 - 6 - b7 Hope this helps!

@@NiXtaeM It would be overwhelming. If you want to learn every scale in the entirety of your guitar neck, it takes some hardcore dedication. At least with this exercise, you can hear how each mode sounds and know the alterations you need to change to play it faster from memory.

the thing is this is not a beginner study, to understand this you gotta start slowly and create a routine that you can understand of what you are doing on the fretboard because you can replicate but learning means that you can use it anyway you want to and that is what actually matters just take your time and practice there is no shortcut to actually master something

I've been going back to the basics and fundamentals that I skipped when I first picked up the guitar and I've just started uncovering scales from another online lesson website so I've only learned the C Major Scale. Though I'll have to take time to understand the terms, the shapes will definitely help in practice!

Imo the HEXATONIC system is one of the freshest sounding scale patterns out there, it's not quite pentatonic or standard modes and there are so many iterations just try them all and pick your favourite 😉🤙

I think this is very good and I'm willing to learn. I have a problem with going up and down scales though in that I don't find it melodic enough or you put something into muscle memory that might dictate what you play. Disclaimer: I'm crap at scales and I don't play heavy metal music. When I come up with a solo, I try to hum a melody first and then try and work it out on the guitar. That way my hands are not dictating what I'm playing. But it's in no way difficult what I do, so I will try and learn a bit more.

At least for the standard modes there is also a nice order to practice them in, where they each just differ by one note to the previous one, e.g. starting at Locrian, you can go to Phrygian (changing the b5 to 5), then to Aeolian (b2 to 2), then dorian (b6 to 6), then myxolydian (b3 to 3) then ionian (b7 to 7) then Lydian (4 to #4) and then if you want to close the loop you can go to Locrian by moving the 1 one step up. Or you can go the other way round if you prefer. You can also see this in the circle of fifths somehow I think... I forgot the details, but I think it's related to chromatic modulation. So this is a cool way to practice all the scale modes in one position pretty much without remembering any extra information, and you even identify, where your different scale degrees are along the way! And I am wondering, if you can do the same for the harmonic or the melodic minor modes... maybe it works a bit different. What you could do though is do the modes of the major scale and then each time also play the corresponding mode of harmonic minor.

Hello Bernth the scale template and "parallel" understanding of modes as separate scales is extremely useful for composing with them, especially when one knows what chords functions are different from the "parent scale" in order to create some sick sounding modal music, like composing in lets say e phrygian dominant, agreed. One Big big caveat that has kept me running circles for the longest time is that if this is applied to a tonal progression, unfortunately one is quite fucked. What i mean is that this besides adding a lot of overhead to our mental processing its just unfortunately simply not enough. For the sake of simplicity lets say you have a minor 2-5-1. If you are thinking on the 2 im playing Dorian #6, on the 5 im playing phrygian dominant and on the 1 im playing harmonic minor, what one is really saying is: im playing harmonic minor all along of whatever key we are in. This is simply not enough to outline the changes, create melodic movement and generate interesting ideas because yes you have 7 notes to choose from but no actual direction on what notes best suit said chord. Instead maybe thinking superimposed arpeggios that come from the parent key (rather than modes) melodic cells, pentatonic wizardry, target notes and shit might be the way to go. The reason i say this is the same reason people often cant create a progression that sounds like "phrygian" because if you are not careful, you will still outline "Major". Idk if i could make my point across but It is relevant i think. I know for me this was a massive breakthrough because in the "chord-mode" system nowhere youll come across that the 4th of "ionian" will sound like shit played as a strong note on the 1 chord, nor is anywhere mentioned how to actually build a line that makes sense and has a direction over your chord progression. You are just given the false sense of agency that you are using scales over chords, but if you are playing within diatonic modes, good luck making anything that makes sense without further instructions. To me for a tonal context its just not useful. Granted, for modal contexts your method is flawless

I saw a scale in one of your videos which has a jump of 4 frets on the B string to give a feeling of an Egyptian sounding scale. I've given up trying to find it as there are so many videos here I get swamped with them. Now at least I see how the formula works with flattened and sharp notes in the given scales I think can work it out.

8:24 One thing I'd like to point out here is most musicians actually call this the 'Ultralocrian' scale. 'Superlocrian' refers to the 7th mode of the melodic minor scale, i.e Locrian b4, or the 'Altered Dominant' scale. So if you take a Locrian scale and flatten the 4th, it becomes SUPER. If you then flatten the 7th (which actually makes it a bb7) then it becomes ULTRA, because ultra is flatter than super. It's a nitpick, and a silly naming sytem for these scales, but that's how I remember it.

I like to approach phrasing over chords with the chromatic scale in mind while remembering where the root note and other chord notes are, no matter what combination of notes you put together they can broken down into this scale or that scale, I like to disregard the limitations of visualizing a scale and just try to pull what I'm hearing in my head out of the fretboard

2 months later, but saying anyway.. I think Drop C is C A D G B E, idk, but there's just it. Obey the scales intervals considering your tuning. There's nothing more to say. Whatever pattern you commonly see for scales and chords will be totally different in Drop C, or All Fourths Tuning (EADGCF), or Perfect Fifths Tuning, or DADGBE, or whatever it be. Consider always learning scales and chords as intervals relationships, not positions across the fretboard. You wont be playing A Minor starting on the 5 fret of E String if you downtuned your guitar a half step, that automatically makes it a Ab (or just G#) minor scale now. Also consider how many strings you have. Multiscale guitars, 7, 8 9... strings. It change many things. Again, you cant rely on shapes or patterns across the fretboard, otherwise, changing tune will make you just a slow beginner again.

I see these as variations of the modes of the major scale, just like harmonic minor is a variation of the aeolian mode. If you know your modes properly, you know where the 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc notes are so you can just sharpen or flatten them for the new scale pattern. Like you said.

Thanks, Bernth. Good exercise, but my issue with scales is always starting from a low note to a high note (or high to low) with no real feeling for tying it in with the melody as well as anticipating the changes in the melody. I want to really learn how to construct riffs that jump around the scale notes in a clever and unique way, rather than a linear up and down the fret board style. I'm still learning how to take portions of scales and linking them together effectively to enhance a melody line or provide counter point at certain junctures and not to overload the track with notes. IMO, a good lead is like a garnish on a dish, it isn't the main course.

"Stop Practicing Scales" by Practicing Scales......but seriously, this is how I love to practice modes so you understand the tonal differences. Pick a root like C and play Ionian, Dorian, etc and you start to hear the feel and sweet notes that make each unique. Mix up the order too. Lydian to Ionian to Mixolydian to Dorian to Aeolian to Phrygian to Locian.
