My solution to physical cards is a cork board display. I display by favorite birthday and holiday cards for the year then cycle them out. Same thing with play bills. I display them until the board gets full the slowly cycle new ones in. One board is in my room and yhe other in the living room. It's been a nice way for me to honor the memory of the things and avoid immediately throwing it away.

When I was in school, I was able to get away with not trying very hard while succeeding quite a bit, but after I graduated from college, I kind of just kept failing, continually, for years, even when I felt like I was trying hard, I think maybe, to an extent, because I had felt my whole life up to that point that most things (not social things, but work, education type things) came easily and what I viewed as hard work maybe wasn't the same as other people. I don't know. And personally, when I was trying really hard to find work and never succeeding, it felt pointless to try, so I stopped and started a cycle of doing nothing, which is hard to get out of.

Yeah, I remember from final year of high school and final exams etc, So many people trot out the 'Yeah I got x mark, but that was from hardly doing any study so I could have done so much better blah blah". But, seriously, the hard part is knuckling down and spending the time studying even though its boring and difficult etc. Like, that is the challenging bit for everyone.

Re energy bill: Don't just pay more money, you need to switch to a cheaper tariff. The reason why E.On told you the prices were going up is because you came to the end of your cheap tariff period. Either go to a price comparison website (best) or phone E.On and ask them to put you on their cheapest tariff (OK). Everyone in their twenties should be doing this!

Can I just say how incredibly relatable and real this is? I value your perspective and life advice so much as it’s led to great introspection of my own life and motivations, and to have this realness of “we do all have a box of doom or corner of shame” and “we all actually feel like pretend adults” is just so reassuring. The reminder that a new, “better” version of myself doesn’t exist at the bottom of the box is also so helpful to consider

Woah hey. Coming for me. I’ve known deep in my heart for years that the reason I don’t eat properly, don’t exercise and don’t actually practise my singing is because if I do those things and apply for drama school and don’t get in, I’ll have failed at my dreams. Whereas now I’ve put it off for 7 years and am applying September 2020! I’ve still done nothing about it because I can live in the dream (and the glory that my singing teacher is impressed by my progress with new techniques even though I know I didn’t practise) But hearing you talk about it with you, I can hear how mad it sounds and it needs to change if I will ever achieve me goals.

Omg 😭 that theory about how self worth correlates with procrastination. I LITERALLY had that realization 3 months ago, because it affects me in every aspect of my life, big time!! Ex: this is my third year of uni, and I haven't done ONE (1!!!!) test where I have studied every subject that I was supposed to. I just always avoid organizing and managing my time, then I pretend I don't care about anything, and last minute I panic and study what I can under immense pressure. And what hurts even more is that for a long time I didn't know what was wrong with me ,and when I figured this out I thought "finnaly I can take care of this issue instead of just hating or feeling bad about myself“. So I told myself I was going to rewire my brain to stop doing it, but guess what? I also didn't do it, and I just feel controlled by my emotions when I should be the one controlling them.

I'm now genuinely looking forward to turning 50 and 60 to see how I can laugh about the me in my 40s and 50s... although obviously laughing now means a small wee comes out. 40s are great... honest

"Ilkla Moor" (Ikley Moor) is a VERY traditional Yorkshire folk song. The title in Standand English works out to "On Ilkley Moor bar (without) t'at (thy hat)." It's one of those accretive songs: you went courting without putting on a hat, you catch cold, you die, we bury you, the worms eat you, ducks eat the worms, we eat the ducks, now we've eaten you up.

I've recently started scrapbooking sentimental items which is great because instead of having a box/folder full of UNEVENLY SIZED BITS I have one lovely neat object that doesn't set off my clutter alarm signals in any way. I always saw scrapbooking as a bit too frilly but then a realised that washi tape and calligraphy are actually optional, mind blown, I'm a scrapbook bitch now.

I have come back to this video on multiple occasions, the "Box of Doom" Google Drive folder is an amazing idea! Also, your victory dance at the end is so amazing and definitely makes me laugh every time I see it. I am fortunate? in being a highly organized person (and yet a huge procrastinator) and finally went through my MANY PILES of papers. Since I have moved quite a few times, I have compiled all the documents into their own folders for each state I've lived in. It has since made finding anything exponentially easier whenever I am looking for something from a specific place. This method may not be for everyone but it has DIFINITELY helped me stay organized. I also just have all (current) documents in an accordion folder to ensure everything that's super important stays together.

Watched this video while working on unexciting (not mind intensive) work for my masters. Perfect for that as well! Honestly, I think of myself as an organized person as well, but I have a paper collection that is similarly easily piled up and hard to deal with. My solution was to get a couple boxes, a file box for important papers that seem like the need kept, but I don't know for sure and a "memory box" for sentimental. I'm a sentimental keep of things, but it really helps to have them at least separate from the important things so I at least know what the piles are and don't get pulled into nostalgia or overwhelm based on content.

Not to brag, but my box of shame does not exist :D sometimes I would like to have one to i go through all the stuff and discover something I forgot about, but nope xD But, that thing about procrastinating in the name of securing yourself from failure... That hits too close to home. I guess that's the sole reason I don't do the things. Thanks for this terrifying realisation! Gonna have to sit in it for a while and eventually DO something, because damn it if my life is driven by fear. Great video, girl!

I relate to this soooo much. Particularly the adult bill worry. Literally have nightmares about going to prison over this imaginary bill. My tip for the box of doom is have a smaller box with a lid. My box is still a mess but I never let it become too big a mess because then the lid won’t shut. It currently fits under a wardrobe. I need to organise it more. I do have a separate box of sentimental stuff which is mostly cards and stuff, should sort it. Planning to sort a bunch do tax stuff when I have time off in September will hopefully get to the box then as well.

This was so satisfying!! I did some major spring cleaning the weekend and finally forced myself to get rid of so many cards, because I'm never going to look at them again no matter how much they meant went I got them. I like your way of putting it - I have the warmth from them in my heart, but I don't need the physical object. Also it felt so wasteful to throw away/recycle so much stuff that I've gathered, which motivated me to be more judicious in the future when bringing new stuff into my home!

I love how kind and compassionate you were in this! Shame doesn't help move forward, it just re-enforce the bad cycle I have found. I have the opposite problem: I'm very good at being responsible and adult, all my shit is in order... I don't have a mystery box, I follow a strict budget, I even have a mini shredder at home...BUT I procrastinate on things that could make my life better or happier, for example writing that book, those poems, going places that enrich me like a museum or seeking the help I need for things that are not like doing taxes and more about lifestyle changes like therapy (which i have started at long last, hooray!). I also opposite to you, think that there's nothing exceptional to me, and that no matter how hard I work and how dedicated I am nothing good will ever happen... So why even try at this point (lots of it has to do with my past traumas to be fair). I'm actively working on all those things and have seen an improvement but its slow progress. I also fear success. I know it sounds really vain but its actually not about being special its the idea that success would change my life and change somehow means danger in my brain. So instead of writing I scan my tax papers and organizes my boxes, take care of all the mystery errands and stay on top of the bills. By the end of it there's no more energy for all the creative stuff. Then I wonder why I feel cranky, sad, and demotivated XD. Or why I feel like my life will have no meaning because all I ever do is paperwork. I'm better at catching it of late but its a hard habit to break. I want more, I think. Also, please praise yourself and your work! Its so refreshing to hear people, especially women be proud and unapologetic of their accomplishment. (although I have heard that's very un-british?)Best of lucks with all those piles!!

I found it so interesting what you said about procastination, I've discussed that with friends who are very similar to me very often and I think it is somewhat tied to having been a "bright kid", growing up used to being successful at most things without much work + getting praise for it (praise that constitutes a big chunk of your identity when your identity is still an everchanging formless blob). As you grow up you still want that extra validation and gratification of accomplishing things "without even really trying" even if that is an EXTREMELY SILLY approach to getting things done as an adult. But you'd rather still think of yourself as that than actually make a well-timed, dedicated effort and expose yourself to the possibility of failing even though you've tried. Silly stuff all around.

Right so I am cleaning up my Mom's house since she passed a month ago. My Mom Loved paperwork, I mean she never met a piece of paper she did not like. And while their is obvious ones like bills and stuff. There are the computer searches she has done as well, and kept because she might go back to it another day and add to it or It might be something she needs. Add to that the kept bills from 1998 yes you read that correctly and all of the paperwork from Grandma and Grandma. It is overwhelming and I am also a person myself who keeps things for far to long because it might be useful or I might need this someday. So as a 47 year old having to deal with all of this my advice is. Yes keep the important tax stuff bills ect keep the memorabilia, and stuff that matters to you. perhaps just mark down why they are important. Because the folks coming after you will have no idea. So long story short I am reassesing my paper hoarding ways lol Also books, and that one is even more difficult to figure out.

I have a box full of stuff that is ‘important’ but I feel like I should go through it because I feel there’s letters in there from when I was at uni. I don’t need those anymore 😂 definitely need a sort out and this video is making me realise I need to sort my crap out

i had spent the first 3 minutes of this video thinking "gurl, not everyone has one of these" and then it hit me as i was reminded of the two bags of junk at the bottom of my closet. however, on the contrary, i like to look at all that junk since i'm a creep pathetically and chronically living in the past. haha (it's not funny, that's a cry laugh/scream into the dark, just like the one at 11:05 ) also, 21:02 - me, trying to impress someone i have crush on thanks for making this, leena!

Oh lord, I've an entire bedside cabinet filled with papers. I have an entire manuscript in there - I've no idea why since the book came out two years ago and it's not like I can change anything. I know for a fact there's a paying in book in there that I last used in 2007, because I found it and put it back because it might get used one day. I suppose I should consider myself lucky that I still live my parents because they're the ones who get all the bill stuff. Although my mother is renowned for putting all her letters in different places, meaning we've eviction notices aplenty, when a few reminders end up piled around the house. Goodness gracious, maybe it is hereditary. Well, I'm going to disappear and have an existential crisis, but I might clear out that damn drawer one day. :D
