Resource guarding can be a very serious issue. What steps or methods do you use to control it?

Love this video, especially the counter-conditioning explained. I have a dominant & nervous & super-sensitive Mastiff-type adult myself (Estrela Mountain Dog), and recently, she'd started to resource guard the space around me against our senior Beagle. I pretty much followed your steps, careful not to over-do the corrections (which were never physical, but consisted in me stepping in between the dogs forcefully, invading the heck out of the Mastiff's personal space and growling at her). She's very sensitive to my feedback, along with not being the smartest dog on the planet, so, careful counter-conditioning and very measured corrections were needed. Too much corrective pressure, and she has the habit of "venting" it towards others in the most unopportune circumstances, and too little, and she'd have continued to escalate her attacks on the small girl. Which already had led to a few scratches, so I needed to tread carefully. Of course, with a Corso, the margin for error is even smaller than with the average livestock guardian breed dog.

“Very measured corrections” is so accurate. Glad our video could be of some help to you. It’s an on going process, but persistence yields results. Appreciate you watching.

What i did for my adult and puppy is this. Is that its mine your just borrowing it. I had the puppy watch me as i give and take the toy from the adult. I give corrections when the puppy naturally tries to get it. Then the same thing as i play with the puppy. Thats just to get the point across of dont fight. I also get 2 of every toy so they have no reason to fight anyways. Good job

You are an amazing Dog Dad. I lost my 8 lb dog a few years back and I still miss him. Tonga is certain,y a lot of dog. It’s a pleasure to watch you focus on body language, you also know his personality and how to correct idiosyncrasies specific to the animal.

My condolences for your loss. It’s always so hard losing our pets. Yes, a lot of work comes with Tonka, but it’s so worth it. Thank you for watching!

He let her know it’s his ball,he did not try to kill her only to educate her.

The owner´s job is to teach him that is not his ball but the owner´s, who grants the dog the use. This dogs are born to be alphas and if you don´t correct then in time, you are in for a hard time.

Excellent video my Corso does the same thing with my cavapoo but I correct him immediately but I didn't do the sharing part. Thanks 😊

Teaching the “sharing” has made a huge difference for us. Tonka is moody and will growl at her from time to time, but no more attacks. Thanks for commenting. 😎
