Any discussion of a nation’s reputation in warfare will almost inevitably lead to derogatory remarks directed towards the French. Their military exploits are the punchline of countless jokes, memes, and other derogatory remarks, lampooning them as cowards or inept on the battlefield.
The reality, however, is much different. Throughout its long history, the nation of France has an extensive and distinguished record of military triumphs, dating back as far as the early Middle Ages. For millennia, French soldiers fought and died with courage, skill, and distinction.

My great-grandfather was a radio operator during the Second World War. Then, when the French government surrendered, he left his job as a radio operator and became a member of the French Resistance, where he was in charge of encrypting and decrypting radio messages. He was captured, tortured and executed with his friends. Much later my family learned that he had never surrendered and had never spoken even under torture. He probably didn't personally play a major role in the end of the war but that doesn't stop me from being extremely proud to be of his blood although I unfortunately never knew him.

So do I and I am French but what can we do ? My opinion is that it's because of politics that France Lost (very similaire to the situation now with Russia and Ukraine) ... for exemple, the concept of Blitz krieg was ... French ! (From De Gaulle himself) ... but that the pragmatic Germans that used it ...vs France...If France, invader Germany during Germany invade Poland : WE win ! But there were not plan !!! Counter ATTACK ... just because in those times, it was an another idéologic War in France (socialiste, communist VS far right ) ...many conscrits were communists and deserted ...the goovernement was against the Army (to nationalist) and French nationalist did not understand the evil of nazism... even some dutch collaborator themselves did not understand that.

Thank you for that in the name of my grandma. I often watch KZbin videos with my grandma. Her brother, Robert, was tortured and killed at 17, he was a resistant, her brother, Jean was a prisoner of war at 20, I have a picture of her, age 13 by his "tomb" in the woods, she still have her brother's goodbye letter. Her family had hidden a Jewish boy for 2 years in the attic... and her grandfather and an uncle died in ww1. She once asked me to translate the comments.... I was too ashamed to do so as most of them were jokes about how French are cowards, white flags, smelly frogs etc.... she would say lovely stuff about the American, the British, the Canadians etc and how brave they were... and wanted to know what they were saying in return... I lied and told her they were respectful, but they were not. Literally every french related video/content, even those not about the war or army, are full of those "jokes". Especially from American. They are very respectful towards their soldiers and veterans, but they make fun of our deaths... not all of them, but sadly most of them.

100 cowards is the same as 1- that is to say those that die aiming to scare rather than to kill have died in treachery of the colors they meant to protect. so to antagonize Napoleon if the British marksman data from the colonial period is correct, it should be mourned where good men are found with their colors, because unlike in the imagination of the templar, no war being holy, in The Great Elephant's honor, it is not pies or moral to do anything less than, annihilate the enemy to extinction less they rise up again to cut your throught; to do less is a sin akin if not far worse than not being willing to kill your food to eat, if you cant kill the animal or plant you dont eat, if you dont kill the attacker you dont live. im not saying the french, templars, or anyone in particular is a coward, im simply offering food for thought on this perspective of these graves. the marksman data i refer to is i believe in the colonial period the British steaked sheets to the ground to measure the effectiveness of their vollies in practice and this was measured against in combat accuracy, from a military perspective the results are quite....unacceptable.

You forgot to mention it in your video, because France is also known for 'betraying' Poland during WW2. In fact, France honored her alliance with Poland and declared war on Germany and launched an offensive in Saar region, but sadly our army was quickly defeated so it was no point to continue it and they returned to defending their land. Not to mention their sacrifice in WW1 when they were major contributor to the victory, and of course Napoleonic wars, when France brought whole Europe to its knees. Vive la France, our greatest ally

As an English teacher in France I often have to remind and re-educate many young French students about the wars and suffering that France endured, along with this the heroic tales of resistance. It seems to be a forgotten part of mainstream education. They are often surprised that I speak with such passion for example about the 8th regiment Zouave who fought to the last man defending the retreat on the canals of Dunkirk. And, the local farmers of Normandy who quietly helped sabotage the V1 rocket launchers.

Even as an Englishman, with French maternal roots (my ancestor married a French girl, 1919), I feel I can relate to the French peoples' feelings. It's sickening to know your ancestors are portrayed as cowards, by keyboard warriors. I am also sick and tired of the Americans taking credit for the British empire's toil and sacrifice in WW2. In this campaign, in fact, the French never managed to take the initiative. They struggled to take action at any point, and in general, their reactions came too late." A good example of French resiliance in WW2 would be the siege of Lille, where 40k men and 50 tanks would hold of 160k Germans and 800 tanks (according to wikepidea) so that the British could escape at Dunkirk. These brave soldiers would only surrender when they ran out of ammo and because of their actions the Germans authorized a military parade where the French marched through the streets with unloaded rifles while German officers saluted.

During WW2, every country in Europe, Including Russia and the UK, suffered massive defeat when facing the Germans at the start of the War. Litterally every country ! The russians fled hundred of kilometers in face of advancing German armies and the British Expeditionary force in France ran to the Sea. The Brits ended locked on their island, experiencing daily bombings. All other countries, from Poland to Norway, Greece, Holland, even Italy in 1943, experienced massive defeats in a matter of days or weeks facing the Germans. The Germans had made a technological breakthrough with the blitzkrieg, inducing a dimensional and paradigm shift in warfare, that no one could match at the start of WW2. The REAL question now, is : why do the anglo-saxons make such fun about French people being cowards due to their performance in WW2 ? And despite the fact that France, while losing in a matters of weeks, inflicted casualties to the German army that were way higher than any other european country at the time ? Because 1)the French had a very high military reputation stemming from the Napoleonic era and WW1 all the way back to Louis the XIV. Hence the defeat of the greatest winner of WW1 against Germany was more closely watched and made for a far bigger event at the time than the defeat of Serbia or Norway for example. 2) the Brits who had run to the sea in face of the Germans and been humiliated too in some sense wanted a scapegoat as well as an easy way to forget their own failure to face the German army in 1940. 3) Brits and French have been long standing rivals and ennemy by the past for centuries. Hence it is not a surprise that the Brits try to scapegoat the French.
