Last Autumn I had a slipped lumbar disc, confirmed by MRI scan. Musculoskeletal person said: walking, exercise bike / cycling, & swimming. Don't sit for extended periods, if you need a short rest lay down but keeping active is the key. Latest research doesn't support all the old ideas from 20 years ago. I needed pharmaceuticals to help deal with the intense pain during the initial weeks. It can take over 6 months for sciatic nerve to recover. Don't overdo things & try to avoid the triggers without handicapping yourself. Hot water bottle may help blood flow & relax muscles. Best wishes to all dealing with nerve damage - it's a torture at times, find things to do that you like, keeping positive is important. Im 70 years old with some degradation of lumbar discs, I can walk for an hour or so, with a bit of lower back ache, cutting toenails is a challenge, as is weeding the garden. Am finally paying a gardener to help, not great for my self-esteem, but it allows me to still grow food. X

I'm 69, had back surgery 21 years ago for a ruptured L5/S1. I never took the big time painkillers I was sent home with, went back to work doing physical labor (moderate heavy lifting), never missed a day of work for anything until I retired and never suffered sciatic pain again (had it pre-surgery, worst pain I'd ever suffered). I can do anything I want in retirement and appreciate how lucky I have been. I had a great Mayo neurosurgeon though.

A couple months ago my sciatica was so bad I was having a panic attack the whole day seemingly and just constant nausea. When I had anxiety my first impulse was to sit down to relax, but I couldn't relax while sitting because all my muscles were tense from the pain. So I was just trying to sleep all day at one point because this was where I felt the least pain. I made it worse because any time I would treat it I would treat the location that was feeling the pain, when in reality it was compressed nerves in my lower back.

I've had sciatica on/of for years. Had 3 spine surgeries and been told I need more. I refuse to give in to the surgery again. Recently retired, I can now devote more time to walking, limit sitting (the computer work all day was terrible for my back) and sleeping with a contour pillow between my knees. Today, I'm free of sciatica but, I know that I have to be very careful in my body mechanics to keep it calmed down. Thank you for the tips today, I'll be using them!

@@chiro-quack-tor2108 I had a friend many years ago who kept going to his chiropractor to get his back manipulated for his back pain. I was at his house when the ambulance came for him. He had surgery for a ruptured disc. Can you imagine the pain from getting your back adjusted with a ruptured disc? His career in auto body repair was over though & he retrained to fix musical instruments.

Seeing all these comments of people still in pain and not able to find solutions hurts me deeply. I was in the same boat for 8+ years, PT programs/chiros/eastern medicine/massage etc. Nothing worked. I was in a car accident when i was 24. I was told that I would be in a wheelchair by the time i was 26. Diagnosed with severe degen disc disease/SI joint damage as well as sciatica. I am pain free today and 100%. There are answers out there. I hope no one loses hope through their own personal journey. I also tried Dr. Mcgill's work. While it did help to work on keeping my body out of certain poor spinal positions/learn to hip hinge everything etc... that ended up only being a band aid (though it did help!) and not a true solution. I appreciate the work that Bob and Brad do to try to help others. People out there most certainly need the help.

Yes a few months ago I tried to find good walking shoes and it was like going to a Lady Gaga concert the soles are so huge and puffy and distorted. The laces stay tied.

21 years ago I had a laminectomy for the infamous L5/S1 disc rupture. No back pain, always referred down my right leg. 2 days after release I was walking a half mile per day. At that time sent home with a bottle of hydrocodone, never took any. PT was great while I was on the time but the pain was back by the time I got to my car (never did PT at home). I worked for another 13 years with no back problems, the same into 8 years of retirement. No back pain, still walk though.

Hydrocodone was prescribed for my sciatic pain prior to my MRI. I took one. Then the pills were never taken again. The side affects of the drug were merely as worse as the sciatic pain. Returned to takin acetometaphens to make the pain tolerable. Tomorrow I get the MRI results. Then I can move forward with exercises or heaven forbid, surgery.

@@PhotographybyTimWMoore 23 years ago when I had my surgery they were giving out hydrocodone like candy. I had sciatica from a disk pressing on the L5 nerve root and literally nothing worked. Gabapentin, marijuana, high dose Advil, physical therapy, massage, nothing. Time was all that did it. It’s pretty sad that there are literally no solutions for some people. The body is really perplexing sometimes. The harshest thing of it is the protective inflammation, which in turn causes even more pain. It’s like your body is actively trying to attack you

Chiropractic care can be helpful but it is not, by far, the only way. If you'd like to talk i have actually studied under Dr. Stu McGill for over 5 years with incredible success with my clients.

Stay away from chiroQUACKtors... I wasted thousands of dollars on them only to realize that they are not real medical doctors... They are graduates from Snap Crackle and Pop college in Des Moines Iowa... The American medical association refuses to recognize these clowns as medical professionals and for very good reasons... Palmer college was started by a looney man that talked with dead people... As you can see I'm still angry about the thousands I wasted... Osteopaths are real spinal surgeons and doctors... Best of all... Bob and Brads exercise advice is FREE..

There are good and bad chiropractors. Fortunately, I've been blessed to find good ones. They have helped me tremendously. Just 4 days ago I was literally screaming in pain and after a chiropractor visit, was able to get relief from the debilitating pain. All the medical doctor did was send me away with muscle relaxers and ibuprofen.

Hi Guys, T.Y, for y'alls expertise. I've had 3 lower back surgeries, last 1, 2014, Titanium plates and screws. Currently being paresis. Sciatica, switches, left or right. The Sciatica pain, is only at the waistline, causing difficult to walk. Unable to lift either legs. My walk is limited. Y'alls ideals are appreciated.

I just had an SI joint injection a couple days ago and it hasn't worked to cure any of the pain at all and obviously didn't help the sciatic or piriformis tear.

The best advice I got that works for me now was from a Osteopath ( back surgeon)...loose weight and do therapy... I wasted thousands of dollars on chiroQUACKtors only to realize that they are not real medical doctors...As you may see I'm still angry about the thousands wasted on chiroQUACKtors... My Osteopath is awesome and Bob and Brads exercise advice is FREE... These two characters are a godsend...

Awww please keep that spirit high. I know it is very depressing. I have just gone through and still have pain down the leg. Yes it is depressing because you keep wondering what you could’ve done to avoid it. Please know it’s normal. Sciatica is NOT serious and it will go away which was very heartening to know from a Harvard study. Just don’t irritate it, take it easy. My friend I know it’s disheartening sometimes. Please don’t lose heart. Know many people right now re in the same boat as you are. And know that feeling a bit depressed is normal.
