Great Explanations! Thank you so much. I have been driving 42yrs, and this morning at a 2 way stop, crossing a 50 mph main road, I stopped after a car across from me. They were signaling a left turn. Hours of searching after making it home safe, led to finding that 2 way stops are so different from 3 and 4 way stops. It needs to be made very clear to most casual drivers. You did that here. The point can't be driven home enough though. The fact that the other 3 and 4 ways stops are FIFO, causes so many drivers you meet in the 2 way situation, to follow that rule. So beware, even though the difference of the 2 way shows best in bad weather, being right isn't always the best way to stay alive. Making a left turn in right hand driving countries, normally changes a drivers right of way, say north-south to east- west. Progression through an intersection does not.

IMPORTANT: When you determine you have the ROW, you need to then make sure people actually stop. If you have the ROW it's easy to assume you can pull out and that other's will stop. Many people have been killed or seriously injured because they the ROW and assume others are going to stop. If you have the ROW but don't want to pull out (because a vehicle might run a stop sign), and you notice another driver is staring at you (because they are waiting for you) - just waive the ROW to him and that will relieve the pressure to pull out and you can wait a few seconds more to make sure you don't pull out and die. ROW DOES NOT MEAN IT'S SAFE TO PULL OUT.

1:19 You got this wrong. After you go, the car that started on your LEFT is the next to go. He is the only car that DOESN'T have a car to his right. The reason for this rule is because it is the most efficient path for all cars. The car that was on your left can enter the intersection while you are still in the intersection, without impeding the other cars. So, you, then the car to your left, then his left, then his left, is the quickest way for all 4 cars to get through the stop.

@cnelsonlv993 жыл бұрын
@@pillcosby5737 Well, there is some logic to that, but (1) it actually isn't the best overall solution for all parties, strangely enough, and (2) it kind of creates anarchy, since most likely all cars won't really arrive simultaneously. The official driving rule for this is designed to get everyone through the quickest, while also having a clear rule that all cars can follow in a systematic way. Just for the record, the post that I made is not me stating my opinion of what the rule SHOULD be... it IS the rule!
@smarterworkout3 жыл бұрын
I think the video has it correct. If everybody gets there at the same time then someone has to take the initiative to roll out. Then once the first vehicle goes, then the vehicle on the right will go and son on. The reason why the vehicle on right goes and not the left is because that is how the rotation goes - to the right (unless the person on the left gets there first but that's null because you all got there at the same time). When everyone gets there at the same time it's not about who got there first it's about "who is going to start the rotation?". So it doesn't matter who got there first. If the guy on your right goes first and then you apply the ROW rule then you are thinking too much into this. The car that takes the initiative and rolls out does not become "the first car on the right to get there" - he's just starting a rotation. It does not mean the guy on the left got there 2nd and so on - the rotation goes to the right. If someone takes the initiative and rolls out and both the guy on the left and the guy on right pull out at the same time - the chance of them colliding is slim...if they both turn right = no collision....if they both go straight = no collision...if one turns right and the other left = not much chance of collision...if both turn left = yes a chance of collision but probably unlikely because they are both pulling out from complete stops. And yes it can get messy because everybody can start rolling out at the same time. All that really matters is that everyone stops - who goes first is not that important in the big picture. Here another scenario to think about. What if 3 cars are at the 4-way stop and the guy in the middle (who got there 2nd) decides to pull out even though the guy on the right got there first? Does this mean the guy on his left goes next because the guy on the right got there before him? No the guy on the right still goes and then car on the left (the 3rd car goes).

Coming from the UK on mini roundabouts we give way to the right so although it's not a rule there it seems most logical to give way to the left of the driving road sides are reversed. If you are making a right turn you have no interaction with the car on your right unless you are driving a big truck that has to swing wide, whereas you will interrupt a car on your left in all 3/4 scenarios if the U turn is permitted which i believe should be made wide around the centre point of the intersection. In fact, the example at 1:24 does indeed show giving way to the left. The other thing is the left turns shouldn't cut across the centre. This means that two left turns can now be made from opposite directions and the cars will circulate nicely in an anticlockwise fashion instead of being in each other's way. You have in essence created a phantom roundabout only with mandatory stopping thrown in. You could probably paint a white circle and some arrows to encourage wide left turns but leave it open for trucks who must cross the centre to fit. Anyway this is just my humble brush opinion on a 4 way stop treating it as a square mini roundabout with mandatory stopping thrown in.

@ 2:22, The turning car gets to go next, as stated, because they arrived & stopped at the "4-way" first before the other car. Except, at a 2-way stop sign, the FIFO rule doesn't apply. The car with the easier maneuver has the right-of-way and if the turning car didn't start moving before the other car arrived & stopped, the turning car would have LOST his right-of-way. @ 2:00, the answer to the question would be different if it was a "2-way stop sign" as it is the car going straight who has the easier maneuver.

The amount of people who don't know these basic rules is staggering. Yesterday I approached a 4 way stop with two cars approaching from the other side in the opposite lane. The first car arrived at the same time as me, I was going left so I had my blinker on while he was going straight. He knew he had the right of way and went in a timely manner. I started moving forward to make my turn before the 2nd car behind him even got up to the stop sign, but he decided that since I was turning left, I had to sit there forever just yielding to everybody until there's no cars left. He just kept on driving past the stop sign and nearly hit me, so I honked my horn. His fat wife decided to throw her arms in the air as if I had done something wrong and then the driver honked back at me. When somebody is CLEARY in the wrong and they honk back, I usually snap. I stopped right there in the intersection in front of him and rolled down my windows to kindly let him know he was a fucking moron and I wanted to ask him how a 50-60 year old person doesn't even know the most basic stop sign rules but they didn't want to talk, unfortunately. I know I need to work on my road rage but at the same time I might print out a shortened url to this video onto some note cards and pass them out if I ever get an opportunity. I've never heard of FIFO and I disagree with it. The "first car to fully stop" rule only happens once. After that initial rule, a different rule kicks in, "the vehicle to your right has the right of way" (as stated in the second scenario, although displayed incorrectly). @ 0:32 after the first [bottom 6 o'clock] car, you'll find yourself in the same situation as scenario 2 @ 1:16. The next car to proceed, in both scenarios, should be the vehicle at 9 o'clock. Why? Because the vehicle to his right, who had the right of way, just took his turn. After 9 o'clock, who's next? 12 o'clock. Why? The vehicle to his right, with the right of way, just took his turn. Simple. You'll notice that after the first initial rule of "the first car to arrive and stop gets to go first (close to FIFO)", a simple clockwise circle starts to emerge. There was so much misinformation in this video it hurt my brain!!!

I too am a driver education instructor and retired today but after well over 56 years I still advise and enjoy driving the open road ! These simple and basic rules apply to women, men, the young drivers, instructors, truckers and bus drivers in all of Canada !

@Tom R first in first out. The first person to arrive at the intersection is the first to leave and then the next and so on
@d.s.dathaniel75523 жыл бұрын
1:58 It’s not a good idea to apply this “FIFO” rule, when you drive, you drive defensively and assume others are not attentive to the extreme, and with everything happening on the driving landscape, most of the time people lost track or don’t pay attention to who has been or has just got to the intersection. In this case, since the vehicle on the left hand side is turning left, he/she should yield the right of way to oncoming traffic that are going straight or taking a right and proceed only when there’s no oncoming traffic. Turning left is the least priority among all road users, the hardest part is you have to be patient and handle the stress from other road users in this case the traffic behind the car on the left hand side.

............sorry, the FIFO rule always applies !........always !
@Lavendeer2012 жыл бұрын
Fifo always applies. It's the safest way to ensure efficient traffic at an intersection. It's literally the point of the sign... you stop then go. The next person stops, then goes.
@jonmitchell55752 жыл бұрын
for the example at 3:20 mark of vid. what if multiple cars are going straight from left to right? does the car turning left yield to all of the cars going straight? or do they take turns?
@TorontoDrivers2 жыл бұрын
At a stop sign, it's always the first person to arrive at the stop line. No matter how many cars are there, they must await their turn when they arrive at the stop line. Hope this helps.

I've come to a complete stop at a two way with my left signal on, and while waiting for traffic a car approaches the other stop sign with no signal on, and almost got into a crash because when it's clear, and I proceed out the car opposite of me tries to go as well thinking he has right of way since he's going straight. I like to come back to youtube and re-watch a lot of these tutorial videos every few months just to make sure i'm not forgetting rules of the road.

if a car is wanting to turn left on a green light and the arrow turns orange that car can still advance into the intersection of the circle light is green. For those few seconds the oncoming traffic has a red light , so would it be legal/safe for the left turning car to advance into the intersection,and turn left ? Or advance into the intersection and wait for oncoming traffic to have their green light and they proceed , and the left turning car to wait for a safe gap?

Good question! A car can definitely advance into the intersection as long as the solid (round) light is green. However, trying to make a turn on a yellow arrow is not advisable because you will get another turn to make a left on a solid green light. Yes, if the solid green turns yellow and it is safe to make the turn, you could make that turn because if you don't then you will end up blocking the intersection. Hope this answers your question.

1:35 is a big one. Who gets to go next is NOT determined by when they arrive in the general area of the intersection. It’s who stops at the line first.

I want to see you explain left turns at traffic light intersections. Some lights have a regular green light and others have the green left arrow or both. You can’t always see oncoming traffic on a green light when you want to turn left when there are three lanes of of oncoming traffic with one of them turning left too.

It’s simple but a lot don’t pay attention enough why’ll driving. When approaching the intersection you should be scanning who’s stopped first and who goes next then you’ll always know the order. Most don’t pay attention and get confused once they get up to the intersection

Would the right turning car have the right of way to go first and the. The left turning car? Hope that made sense @TorontoDrivers

Enough until you have visual with incoming traffic from both sides. If there pedestrians about to cross, wait for them to do so safely. If you moved up too far and are stuck waiting for an opening, pedestrians will just have to wait for you to cross if they cant safely cross around you.

Ok I have a question say it's a two way stop sign. Like the example you had at the end. Say the driver who is taking a left got there first, but the driver who is taking a right gets to the stop sign. They are both waiting for straight traffic to cross and it clears up. Who goes first the person who got there first but is taking a left, or the driver who arrived later but is taking a right? Doesn't right usually have the right of way?

At a 2 way stop one person turning left and one turning right into the same lane who has to yield if the person turning left was stopped first? I always thought the person making the left must yield until the opposing traffic is clear.

In a 2 way stop, from all I have read today, no. For many reasons. In a 3 or 4 way, yes. 3 or 4 way stops are first in first out. But because the FIFO rule is best known, being right can cause altercations in 2 way stops.
