Hi folks I am Pete the guy in the video hitting the golf shot...I have to say until Phillip did this drill I would not have believed it.. What actually happend is that I had popped down to Northampton for the day to help the guys out with their filming and Phillip asked me in general conversation what my normal shot shape is ? I told him always a slice /fade and he said he would cure it in 5 minutes. I have to admit I laughed to myself and thought yeh whatever Ive heard it all before. Then he did the drill in the video and I was shocked !!!. Now please bear in mind and believe it or not I had not hit one single golf ball due to my work commitments for a few months since a one day society event I attended at Draycote Hotel. When I got to set up to swing I was quite nervous and thought I'm gonna duff this or worse hit it fat it or thin etc..and that I would probably have to hit another ball. BUT that wasn't the case. It was the one and only shot I took WOW !!!..I struck it well and saw a slight draw and the ball was was going straight towards the target. I have to watch the video again and again to believe it as I never ever draw the ball..

Thanks for your post Pete, I know most viewers won’t believe that this is possible, especially those that slice. But as you said this was done in one shot and you hit a draw, something you had never done before on your first attempt. I sliced myself for many years when I first started playing. I cured it the hard way, like all the other video clips you’ll find on KZbin, but it really is the hard way as you are fighting your inner brain the whole time. However, I have seen the same thing happen as it did with you, many many times that as soon as the mind is clear about the objective the body conforms. There’s an old saying I love that goes “what the mind perceives the body will achieve”. So anyone with a slice watching this video go out and check your alignment in the way shown - even better if you can do this with a friend who can discover where you perceive to be your target line BEFORE then correctly realigning the target line. Ideally the spot wants to be about ten yards in front. Once you have this clearly in your mind your swing will start to correct itself.

Pete, thank you once again for your time while we filmed this session and for your help during that day. We are so pleased that in just ONE shot you were able to teach yourself how to hit a draw and eliminate your usual fade/slice! This is such a common issue golfers have and this easy exercise demonstrates the power in checking your perceptions and challenging your existing swing beliefs. We can't really take any credit in what you achieved, we didn't do a thing, you did it all yourself! We only helped by presenting you with new information that you could act on. Well done though, it was a truly magnificent shot and even more impressive that you had no warm up. We threw you right in the deep end, rolled the cameras for even more pressure and you still went and nailed it!

The thing I noticed in all the years I coached is that the further you stand from the target line (ie the longer the club) the more exaggerated this gets. Hence another reason why people slice their driver so much.

What becomes really fascinating is how by changing the alignment of the marker (moving it slightly left or right of target) you can quickly learn to shape your shots, hitting a draw or a fade.

Same with me, I have a draw swing and am mostly aiming too far to the right, when my partner puts a club down to show me I can’t believe it. Trying to pick out something ten feet in front to help with my eyes fooling me.

This is why I pick a spot off the ground a few feet in front of the ball in line with the target; then, after I take my stance (parallel to the imaginary line from the ball to my intermediary target a few feet in front of the ball) I don’t look back downrange; just concentrate on having the ball go over the intermediate target on the ground.) Seems to work most the time. I do the same when putting.

Excellent stuff. This is a great way to stay correctly aimed and aligned on the target line. Anything from 3ft to 6ft in front of the ball is a good rule of thumb. It's absolutely fine to look back to the target, just be sure to picture the intended (correct) ball flight to the target 👍

Fred I am glad you found this thought provoking. Fundamentally this is my absolute belief having taught golfers for nearly half a century, that if their inner alignment (in other words, where their mind perceives the target to be) is out of line the body will follow that line. I found this misalignment happens early on when people start playing and if not corrected tends to get worse.

I'm 72 years old and been playing since I was 7. Thanks!

Just to get it right: Did he manipulate the clubhead resp knowingly try to hit a draw? The aiming part is interesting but then to turn / manipulate the clubhead so much seems not feasible. Sorry if I misunderstood.
@philipsparks8315
@philipsparks8315 Жыл бұрын
That’s a great question. What happens is a sequence of events which starts from the realisation that the target line, every slicer I have ever seen is aiming for, is to the left of the real target line. This results in a natural desire to swing the club towards this line thereby creating an out to in swing. This is also why for those players who are unaware of this incorrect line, even if they try to swing in to out, this is contrary to the mind’s perception and so the subconscious will always try to overrule this instruction. However, once the correct line is perceived by the subconscious, the path of the swing automatically changes. The player merely needs to be aware of the feel of this alteration. Almost immediately, most players also become aware of the role of the clubface and instinctively close it more. This is why any of the other corrections for a slice are (at least) very difficult and counterintuitive, or are only temporary fixes. You have to get to the route cause and then everything starts to fall into place.

@@Chosil not at all, I appreciate you taking time to try to understand what happened in the video. I think it is pretty much impossible to cure someone’s slice without first establishing what is going on in their mind. The day after filming this video I did the same thing with a pro on a 177 yard par 3, he hit the ball to 12 feet from the hole (over water) and then said he hadn’t hit a draw like that for years.

I think I misunderstood something. You're saying that I'm aligning myself as a slicer to the left of the finish line and my brain is tricking me. As a result, I swing exactly there and with an open clubface the slice is created. Well... I've been consciously aiming to the right for a long time and kept the shoulder closed longer and also come more from the inside. But the clubface is always open and the ball still flies to the right, despite the different alignment. What can I do...because somehow that does not work for me
@philipsparks8315
@philipsparks8315 Жыл бұрын
Ok before we discuss clubface at all I really would like you to go to the range or practice ground with someone who could do for you as I did for Pete and put a marker exactly where you picture the ball going 10 metres after impact. See if that is on line or not. This is so critical to discover because this is my very point you can try to close your stance, you can try to hit from the inside and keep the shoulders closed and all the other things that you get told will correct a slice but if your brain perceives the target to be somewhere other than where it REALLY is anything else is forced and unnatural and your subconscious will override it. When you’ve checked this out come back to me and we can discuss next steps.
@philipsparks8315
@philipsparks8315 Жыл бұрын
Do you know that the clubface for tour players closes at 2.5° per inch through the bottom of the swing this means 12” before impact the clubface is 30° open and of course 12” after it is 30° shut. That is a 60° rotation in 24”. Most slicers are not doing this and try to keep the clubface square to the target. So once you have corrected alignment, this is the next thing to check as it is ultimately the alignment of your swing and the squareness of your clubface that matters to the ball it really doesn’t care about much else!

@@philipsparks8315 Hello Philipp, thank you for responding again after such a long time. Funnily enough, I'm reading Brian's book for the second time and a few days ago I read exactly this section that you mention here. In fact, I defacto have an alignment problem that I am still working on. On the ranch it works to some extent, but on the round I have a hard time getting it all right. I've even heard from my wife on the round that I aligned myself to the right of the target, but still hit a slice. Then it can only be due to the technique. But whatever it is...the eyes still play tricks on me.

@Easiestswing
@Easiestswing 11 ай бұрын
That's great that you always pick your target line before addressing the ball. That would suggest your ball flight starts online as well, or does the ball come inside your target line before slicing offline? A great task is to figure out how to create a shot that is the opposite of your issue. I.e. learn to hit a hook and discover what it takes to do it. If you typically hit a pull-slice then learn to hit a push-hook. We often look to prevent our unfavourable shots, instead we should look to create an opposite one. By doing so you can learn what is in between the two extremes.
@samhowl1152
@samhowl1152 Жыл бұрын
So essentially we're aiming at the wrong spot, which makes our swing path incorrect?
@Easiestswing
@Easiestswing Жыл бұрын
Exactly! Our perception is often wrong. When standing over the ball, the line to the target appears much further inside the correct line than it is, preventing us from making a swing along the correct swing path. Our brain receives this incorrect information and overrides our decision making ability (must swing in to out etc etc.). Our subconscious is unbelievably brilliant at performing tasks for us without the need to consult us first. Give it the correct information and viola, it will perform the task without any hesitation.

@@Easiestswing I don't play ball golf, but disc golf instead. The ball golf instruction is just so much better. I throw discs left handed, so I stand just like a right handed golfer, only I'm left hand dominant. Discs turn and fade just like a golf ball. As a left handed player, the spin on my disc always causes it to fall to the right, backwards for right handed people. Because my discs fade to the right, it is habit to throw them a bit left on purpose so the fade causes it to stay more straight. So I was always aiming left. I'm sitting here doing my swing with what you said in mind and it feels a lot better. Feels like I'm getting a lot more snap snap and power
