Thank you for finally calling out the “don’t buy the set” myth! The advice you gave on the bedroom nightstands and dresser needs to spoken about more by others. Not everyone has the time to curate each individual piece over years. Sometimes you want a place to put your underwear... today. Again Great Advice.

I agree that modern "matchy matchy" sets are 🤢. That said I have a set that is from the late 1940's early 50's and was my father's when he was a kid. Between taken care of and being well made it still looks newish but is classic enough to use in any room as storage (my father used the tall dresser to store his cd's, stored the headboard/frame because his queen didn't fit, his bedroom had the short dresser, mirror and nightstand) I use most pieces in my bedroom but the mirror is in my living room (headboard is stored for the same reason as dad). Imo classic/vintage sets are art and look great either alone or together. Lol

Just a little advice when hemming curtains: press and hang the curtains. Pin (just a couple of pins) each panel. It’s important to pin each panel because sometimes your walls are not even and lengths will vary from panel to panel. Then measure further with each individual measurement. Sometimes just a small difference can add up and the some of your panels will end up too short or too long.

I really love your videos on design! You are so thorough and make this all so easy to understand. I also really like that you mention sustainability and excess plastic waste when you're giving advice. I feel like so many KZbinrs overlook this. In terms of smaller windows that don't really reach far down the wall, would those still look alright with floor length curtains? I live in the UK and it's common to have smaller windows and I'm afraid they'd be dwarfed or end up looking silly with really dramatic drapes. Thank you for making such great content!
@GarrettLeChic
@GarrettLeChic 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for asking! Thats of course difficult to answer without seeing the window, but if full length curtains don't feel right to you a roman blind is another great option that you could use to create height!

I sewed custom made drapes from the time I was 16 until 22 for interior decorators in their workroom - partially paying for my university education. I can make anything, from bedspreads to lampshades, roman shades, Austrian shades, any type of window treatment or cloth décor. But I buy the thick rod to go across the ceiling and buy the quality fabric narrow panels with the large rivets. Cheap. I do hem them just off the floor; I hate them dragging, too. When I pull them across, they are flat. I'm not doing 2.5 to 3x the width - it's not worth the cost, plus the panels are too thick stacked on the sides - still producing the effect of drawing the eye up. Then again, my décor reflects my ocean views - beachy, slightly industrial. I'd rather spend the money on art.

I've definitely made the mistake (more than once) in previous homes of fitting in furniture but forgetting about clearance. Like not leaving enough space to pull back chairs around the table and forcing people to squeeze through, or blocking access to a window by having a sofa be totally across the way haha. I think I've finally learned my lesson now.

I’m a formally trained sommelier and worked in the wine industry for nearly 25 years. I’ve seen other interior design videos, and I must say your aesthetic matches mine. I know design is subjective. I like how you teach people to arrange what they love. I even have a piano and some furniture like yours. I’m glad I found you because if I were to watch other videos who are into solely modern and focusing just on trends, they almost compel me to change everything which I don’t want to do because I love the stuff I bought over time. I live in Australia and most people don’t do curtains here but blinds... horrible plastic white roll down blinds... Another way to get the “custom” drapery look w ready made is to buy 2 sets & sew/hem tape (depending on how heavy the fabric is) 2 panels together lengthwise before hanging instead of having someone else do it. It’s pretty easy if you’re a decent straight sew-er. Also, as he advised - don’t skimp on the rod! If your budget is REALLY tight you can even do this w good quality Walmart curtains & you’ll get that spectacular looking fullness custom draperies come standard with and the seam can be hidden within the folds once hung. Excellent advice & new sub! Thanks! - An ex-drapery coordinator/designer & installer that grew up in the biz 😁

More great advice as usual. I do prefer the look of floor length curtains, but in the living room we don't want them that long because a certain feline won't let us have nice things. I actually used a couch in front of one window and an ottoman chest under the other to hide that space between the 63" curtains (omg monsters live here) and the floor. It please her feline majesty too.

A way to make completely missmatched furniture work (all types of wood/wood finnish or styles) is to paint a few of the pieces black or white. It can "calm" a space. I find it doesnt work as well to paint them in a "color" -even if it is a color already in the space, as it will often just "expose" that you are trying to "hide the missmatch"😉 Also its very important to do do a good job of painting the furniture to "blend" them in to the space seamlessly (if that is what you want it to do🙂)👍🏼 Ps I am enjoying your videos alot! I loved this video! I just subscribed! We just bought a house in Japan and I'm having trouble planning since there are things we just can't do here. The curtain heights and rods are pretty standardized and we can't put it any higher since there are no studs in the walls to support it according to the builder. They only allow for the curtains to go over the windows. 😢

Different jurisdictions have varied laws and ordinances that must be followed, and different building methods that might not be appropriate for everything we might want to do. I would definitely follow the advice of licensed professionals in your area like the builder. I'm sorry to hear about your windows, but I'm sure they will look nice, and you don't want to be in any sort of legal violation, or do something that isn't safe or appropriate because of the construction of your home as well.

Studied both architecture and interior design (I no longer work in the field). My big challenge is designing for *myself*. In the process of building a forever house. They are clearing the lot now and I feel like every finish selection I made is wrong (although wildly confident when I picked them)....LOL. Now, extend that with the interior design. I have gone back and forth 100 times over layout, fabrics, styles, etc..... Wine helps, and so do your darling videos. :)

When you have as much exposer to design as we do its always had to make selections, not because they will look bad, but I just want to make sure thats what I really love not just what is trendy at the moment, because even I get hung up on trends I like!😂

I don't love shower curtains, but I can handle a fabric curtain, my issue is usually the height, I don't find that you can raise the shower curtain without having one custom made, or you can use an extra wide window curtain, just be sure the fabric is washable!

It wonderful to learn principles that help me do a great job on my personal space. I appreciate that you enjoy blue and white and mahogany --- so many of the so called designers on KZbin are only interested in contemporary furniture, so your videos are particularly relevant to me. Thank you so much for your videos! I watched part 1 many, many, many times as I'm searching for new furniture and art for my very small living room. I totally took into account furniture volume AND hanging art as part of the architecture--I'm just under 5 feet so this piece of advice changed the way I thought about hanging art. Anyway, some my new furniture is arriving today(!), I just want to thank you for the videos and the plethora of interior design education and humor! I'll definitely be applying your advice as I look for a new couch :)

Watched your video for the first time. Loved your detailed advice. Count me in Subscribed and liked the vid . So I'M CURTAIN/DRAPE HANDICAPPED!!! You cracked me up as soon as I was typing this you mentioned CATS. I have cats and I have shelves around my walls 😬. (The bottom of the curtains are not an issue my cats won't bother them) it's the fact that I can't put them all the way to the top because of the cat highway Jackson Galaxy recommended!!! Oh the hardships of pet parenting... Hey can you do a segment for pet parents? With beautiful different pet furniture or ideas from around the world? Frankly everything here in the USA is so boring clunky and repetitive and so unfashionable. XOXOXO

Your explanation of “rules” and concepts are like the glue I’ve need to put all the pieces together that other designers have just left dangling. This guy is teaching universal principles that would help anyone. He doesn't have a style agenda or bias based on only what he happens to admire. This is rare in any decorator even those at very top tend with Master Class lectures. They just explain how to get their particular look. He is going to the basics and teaching what would work for anyone with any style. I wish he lived nearby I would hire him to do my basement. I wanted to say on custom curtains which I swear by. I have never bought ready made or even semi -custom for our houses (yes for apartments) even when we were younger and on a budget. I would go to a local fabric shop and asked for recommendations of seamstresses that are good but affordable and I always got great results at very affordable rates. Also I have seen ready made look like custom if they are professionally installed. Good installation is everything on curtains. I have a very good seamstress and she hangs my curtains and she will make so many tiny adjustments till they are perfect. I have watched her a thousand times and I think I could do a pretty good job but I still don't DIY my installations.

@GarrettLeChic
@GarrettLeChic 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Barbara! Soffits are a bit tricky. I'd have to actually see it to give my opinion. There are different ways soffits present themselves in a home, so there is no one size fits all answer. I might be offering a virtual service later this year on limited basis for people who want to book an individual decorating consultation. :)

I am in the process of renovating a new apartment and I have a small problem. (In the attic - so I have a lot of sloping ceilings) I have a triangular window in my bedroom. It is quite small and I must cover it with something because I have too close to my neighbors. Only the curtains usually won't stick. They'll be falling down, because there is a sloping ceiling above them :D do you have any idea what to do with it? sorry to ask you again, but you seem to be one of the smartest people in yt :)

One piece of window advice that EVERYONE gives that should have a caveat is to hang your curtains wide. I followed this advice in my daughter's bedroom and it was a mistake. The window in her bedroom was large relative to the room size. Making the window look larger when it was already pretty large actually made her room look smaller.

Okay in your window treatments video please touch on exterior transom windows. We have some above the backdoor and other windows in our living room and when the sun comes in them it’s absolutely blinding for about an hour a day. We’re looking for some treatment for them and all we could come up with were sheer Roman shades?? Any help would be so appreciated.

Transoms are always hard, and you really don't have a ton of options that won't impede the usability of the door and windows, Romans might be your only option, but you could maybe do frosted glass film, they come in patterns or maybe you could have one custom monogramed, that would help defuse the direct light!
