my 05 Hyundai accent kept clicking at the pump, then after watching this video all I had to do was slide the hose clamp that connects "to Air" back, disconnect at the fuel feeder neck, dump the coal pellets out of the hose, reconnect the hose and slide the clamp back in place. 2 min fix, no more clicking at the pump! Awesome video, thanks joe.

Thanks Joe. I have a 2000 Sonata, same problem. Bought the vapor box and valve for $226 (wife thought I was crazy). Changed it myself, took a little effort. No more clicking at the gas pump. Take that wife!

I mean did it smell like gas all the time? It is carbon, it only absorbs so much stuff then it goes to return. New carbon is probably better... But... Does it not smell like gas? That's what counts, for emish and brain cells yeah 240 That is a bit crazy. -a poor guy. Oh well

I found this video while researching the components listed on old repair invoices which I collect religiously. In the age of You Tube it's intriguing to get first-hand looks at things mechanics have done with my vehicle since purchasing it in 2002. In this case I am holding an invoice for this exact repair which cost in total $251.64 from a Hyundai dealer in Tampa back in 2006. I wish videos like this one were around back then because this looks like a 15 minute job or so and I would have tried it in a heartbeat. As an interesting side note, when this problem first began, I took the car to Firestone. They not only could not find the problem they denied that I was experiencing it in the first place (there were no "test" gas pumps at their shop for me to demonstrate so they only had my description of the issue to go by - and they didn't believe me). Despite their doubt and inability to address the issue they charged $100 just to have the look. I contacted Firestone after the Hyundai dealer properly assessed and replaced the canister to let them know I had just dropped a hundred bucks on them for zip, and they completely refunded me.

I don't know why that hose even has clamps because the hose feels like it's entirely fused to the metal and I can't budge it even a millimeter after removing the clamps.

Try soaking some penetrating fluid at and on the joint. That might help loosen things up a bit.

Man before I found this video this same problem I was having was a mystery, I first thought that there was something blocking the fill hose to the tank. But there was nothing blocking that line. Then I knew it had to be a breather hose clog which would do the same thing. It was really weird when I removed that little breather hose from the canister and all those black pellets fell out. I first thought it was rotten rubber but the realized this is a part of the canister. This is a really complex fuel system but this video made it much more understood and simple to fix Thanks dude!!!

Metal mesh over the big hose outlet? Would that stop the beads from doing the clog up the hose bit?

You don't have to cut the plastic tie. You can stick a small screwdriver in there, press the little lever and it pops right open.

Great video Joe. I have a 2002 Accent and this is happening to me. I think I'm going to start by trying to clear the tube... Looks like yours was also a 2002 so that part you ordered will probably work for mine too, right? I've done a few small repairs on my car (battery/spark plugs, etc) but nothing this extensive. 2000 Elantra same issue replaced the canister and filter dismantled the filler to clean it out. Also had replaced both sensors. Still same issue. Can’t even put 1/4 gallon before it clicks

Great video Joe. I inherited a 2001 Hyundai Accent GS. It developed the problem that you described in this video. For the last two years or so, I have been forced to dribble gas into the tank. If I depressed the gas pump nozzle handle too much, the pump would stop pumping gas. This is because the gas was backing up in the gas tank filling tube due to the vent line being plugged up with the charcoal pellets. So being a nice night out and only 70f, I decided to do the quick fix and try to clear the charcoal pellets out of the vent line. The line was easy to detect as when I squeezed one of the larger hoses I could hear the crunch of the charcoal pellets in the hose. The 17 year old hose gave me a little difficulty to remove but I got it off without tearing the hose. The pellets in the hose pretty much spilled out and I used a screwdriver to make sure the line was clear. I then went to work on clearing the loose pellets in the canister with a screw driver. I finished this up by using my shop vac to vacuum out as many of the pellets as I could. Knowing that I may have to do this in the future, I lubed the inside of the hose and the fitting with silicone gel. I do not plan to replace the canister unless I get a "check engine light" that would prevent the Hyundai from passing inspection. Due to the age of the Hyundai, the next maintenance that I plan to do is to replace the timing belt. Oh, and this 17 year old car just rolled 49,000 miles on the odometer last week.

I just did this today and used your tip to vacuum out as many as possible. I just filled up for the first time in a couple of years where I didn't sit there for 10 minutes (I'm very happy). I'm curious to see how long this will last. Also, I'm surprised your canister is having issues with only 49k?

So, it is now October 2024. My Hyundai now has 65,000 miles on it. I did get the timing belt / water pump / new heater/radiator installed. New brakes/rotors/drums and blead the brakes with new brake fluid. New CV axles. New tires. I guess that I got most of the charcoal pellets out of the canister. I don't detect any gasoline vapor being vented. No check engine lights. Gas mileage is 25mpg in the city. Much better on the highway. 1.6L DOHC engine. Best improvement was new wife ;) ... This should be the last year that my Hyundai will need any type of safety or emission inspection (Texas).

I have the same refueling issue with my 2005 elantra. And i jist ordered to parts so i could replace both the canister and valve. My question to you is. Have you seen any difference in MPGs? In my elantra am getting about 20 mpg. By the way. Thanks for the video

I have the same issue with my 01 Hyundai Tiburon. I knew the EVAP canister was messed up because it was throwing codes. It was my boyfriend's car, and he got a new one so he gave me this. I just wanted to let you know that you did so good explaining in detail that I felt like I could even fix it myself. Great tutorial. I do have a question for any car people out there, sometimes when it's low on gas it will (I really don't know what to call it) jerk, I guess. If I cut the car off for a few seconds and start it back it won't do it right away. It's such a ghosty problem because sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesn't do it. Sometimes it does it when there's gas in the car. Anyway, my bf was sure it was the coil pack, so we had that replaced, but it did it again the same day and there was plenty of gas in the car. That was about 2 weeks ago and it hasn't happened since. Could this be related to the evap?

Here's a tip. When fueling, don't shut the car off. You may hear some gurgling noise but you can fill up as normal... I had the same issue but decided to live with it because having purchased a new canister the mounting bracket didn't fit right so returned it. Everything works as it is supposed to with the old canister. It doesn't affect mileage, as I get up to 42mpg on highway and 30-35 city.

Nope not all cases lol ive tried everything car on car off gas nozzle upside down, the best way to not spill gas i found is use as little pressure as possible on the gas handle,,, also extremly annoying cus u need to hold the pump the whole time

i cut the top of mine canister and blew every hose from charcoal , still didn't work for me ,.. ill try to get out the hose from gas tank to the filler cap , may have spider web stuck inside .. been siting for a long time . vent solenoid stuck open , not sure if that make any difference for the pump

i don't think that fixed it. something caused the fuel to back up such as the vapor canister purge solenoid which draws the fumes into the plenum so the fumes can burn off. by not working it caused the canister to back up with raw fuel and push carbon into the gas tank vent tube and clog it up. better check the canister vapor control solenoid with a vacuum tester to see if it's working and check the ohms if it's not a vacuum leak. this video explains kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJ7Jmnxnp86Vmq8

hey joe i have 2000 hundai accent Iast night i fill up my fuel tank with constant clicks at the last to pay round figure and tank was almost finish and i drive 5 to 6 kms after fuel light glow. After refilling my car stops numbers of time on the way with jerks seems like something struck in fuel line or carby. please let me what is the problem. is there any dirt in my fuel tank or anything else.

I didn't have any of those symptoms. Could be any number of problems that might cause that. Check your fuel pump. In the hyundai accent it is located underneath the rear seat and pretty easy to get too. Good luck!

Oops! I totally read that question wrong. For some reason I read that the tank was empty. Having a hard to start issue with the tank full could indicate a problem with the EVAP system and I would like into it after all. Could be, but the first thing to do when the check engine light comes on is to check the codes. if you don't have a code reader, most auto parts stores that I know of will scan it for free and at least point you in the right direction. I replace the canister and the check engine light went out and I could then put fuel in the car. However, the time that it was running with the defective filter may have caused other problems. I have since had the plugs and wires changed along with the head gasket. Total cost at the garage was $500. Now it is fine. If you change the filter and the car still feels sluggesh you will probably have to have more done. Then again my car is at 100,000 and these things had not been done before.
