Running the engine so we could hear the rattle would have been useful in helping us diagnose the problem.

You’re supposed to uncollapse the tensioner from the chain guide opening after putting it in.

How? Online says oil pressure releases the tensiner?

Not a Mini Owner, but, looking to buy one and am overwhelmed with the info. Just curious how swapping out the tensioner helps when the timing chain could be past it's 70mm or so of deflection? Again, don't own one of these cars, hiding trying to understand what I'm getting into, maintenance wise. Thanks!

In this case, only the tensioner had gone bad and stuck itself. If you replace the tensioner and the noise comes back, it wasn’t a bad tensioner. In most cases it is only the tensioner though.

@@HiRevzMedia Is this covered by the Class Action Suit/TSB vis a vis the Timing chain? I ended up not buying that particular Mini, but, always love learning new things! Thank you for your response!!👍

@@colinsdad1 you would think so, but my car is a 2006 model, so it is not included in that.

How many miles on the car? And when do you typically change the oil? I was reading an article saying that the manual says you can go 15k miles before an oil change, but such stress is likely a big reason the tensioner gets worn so often on (older) MINIs.

I had just recently got this car when the video was taken. This one has a little over 100k miles. Not sure what the previous owner used. We use AMSOIL Full Synthetic in everything. It’s Guaranteed to a 25,000 mile oil change. AMSOIL is the best oil out there. We are an Independent Dealer for them. Check out the link: HiRevzGarage.com/pages/synthetics

@@HiRevzMedia bro I got the rattle in mine I have a 2010 with 35k miles on it and the belt has been replaced and everything but am curious on how to fix.

That is the only thing wrong on the manual. Most Mini enthusiasts recommend every 3-5 thousand. But, I would still check this guy's link in his oil that says less change. These minis eat oil do to high torque small engine. Check every time you fill up your gas. Learn how to read it. It's tricky.

Are there different size tensioners? Or is this one size? Just started getting that diesel rattle, in my 06 cooper S. I figure this could work until I get all the tools to replace the chain kit.

There are different sizes for different years/models, but procedure and location seems to be the same from what I've seen

@chrismurphy7199 much appreciated info. Thank you. Did that chain kit at 167k. I'm on 206k with a 15%reduction 62m IC, new seals front and back top and bottom, and upgraded clutch. Runs amazing. Time for motor mounts top to bottom it vibrates and I can see the dog bone rubbers are starting to break.
