Now, the use of plastic bags in cooking rice has become a ritual in most Ghanaian homes. The plastic bags are normally used to trap the steam from escaping when the rice has to cook on medium heat or on a simmer.
The fact is that the lids of some saucepans bend out of shape as a result of the heating and cooling process. So, in order to save time and energy, the plastic bag is purposely used to cover up any space under the lid to prevent the steam from escaping, hence, speeding the cooking process.
However, this practice is axiomatically dangerous to our health because plastic bags usually melt. And when plastic is burnt, it releases harmful chemicals such as hydrochloric acid, dioxins, sulfur dioxide and among others. These chemicals are potentially carcinogenic; they cause cancer and other ailments.
So, for the safety of you and your family, please stop using plastic bags. Instead, get a good saucepan with a tough lid which won’t bend out of shape after a short period of usage.
Now, even if your lid cannot fully cover the saucepan, the rice will still cook, so please you have no excuse to use plastic bags anymore.
