Just found your videos since my kids and I are learning to play the ukulele. You are a fantastic teacher. You even tell us to look up! My 10 year old just asked me after watching so many of your videos already, "how many ukuleles does she have?!?" haha! Thank you for your videos.

Omg- I didn't realize what a difference changing the strumming pattern makes!! I'm fairly new at the ukelele- been playing less than 1 year- and I was so excited when I learned the island strum, that I pretty much play it automatically on every song, lol!! But you are spot on- these other strumming patterns really make the songs. So much better fit. Thank you again Bernadette for reminding us to stay open minded to change. Great tutorial!!😍😍😍 And yes- anybody that's on the fence about joining Patreon- it is well worth it!! You get so much info and instruction and Bernadette is a wonderful teacher. Very patient and great at explaining everything. Plus a master on her instruments!!✨✨✨

I agree what you show here sounds better on this song...as you show it, the execution of the chord change at the right time is VERY important otherwise you risk getting lost. YOU are such an experienced teacher...you added "breathe" when going for another run through & I chuckled at home, not because you are funny but because when we adult learners are coping with a major new technique we can get stressed and we don't want to admit it. However if we get too stressed we will quit, saying it is too hard! Your suggestion to " breathe" is funny & important at the same time!😂❤

Beautiful strum pattern. I'm definitely going to work on it but it's kicking my butt even at 50% speed. My problem is I'm instantly lost. What I mean is for me to learn this song using the island strum, I over emphasize the 1st down on the key chord change word (When, Rain, In etc) and I can instantly follow your singing and off I go. This new pattern I think you are emphasizing the 3rd down and I instantly lose the count and can never catch up. For me and maybe others, for a new strum pattern, play one run-through by over-emphasizing the 1st down strum of each chord so we can get a feel for the chord start, rhythm, tempo and count :)
@devorahkaplan33307 күн бұрын
Me too, was lost until I could distinguish where the emphasis is. Whew! One or two run throughs, slow with this detail, would make this lesson a winner. Mahalo! Thanks!

Great video Bernadette. Very simple but it does sound way better on those songs then the island strum. I’m more a down up down up kind of guy (with the occasional beat skipped, depending on the song). That said the one thing that I never seem to improve is streaming and dynamics, trying to turn noise into music. left hand is way better than the left so any further videos of this nature would be great.

Thanks Bernie...Island strum was the first strum I learned...but I never used it for all songs...I agree it does not fit for a lot of songs...actually I don't do much strumming...more a chord melody person...but I find this ...ddd...du....another tool in the tool box...merci

It`s so funny, that this is a thing with the island strum. I started to learn Ukulele with your videos back when you was still in Okinawa. I learnded with youtube and books and always a lot of different strumming patterns where teached. I never had the feeling to have to stick to only one of them. I am fine if people just write the strumming pattern once (Like DDD DU) and than i try to follow that. Sometimes some need a moment of adjustment of course.

This is a good strum pattern. My take is that the whole pattern covers 2 measures or 5 strokes per measure, while the island strum is 6 per measure.
