You guys need to be careful of that mark especially in places like kashmir, you or your bike might get attacked by radicals. yeah, Although it varies from state to state but in general there is a problem of Waste Management in India. Mostly because government has not invested enough in this. Why has government not invested appropriately in this ? Because its not a major electoral issue. Even though you see lot of army convoys on roads in ladakh kargil region, they are present only at the actual borders, however in kashmir army is deployed everywhere. You can see them at entrance and exists of each village or town. That is because of heavy separatist sentiments present there. But its unfortunate in such a beautiful part of the country. Kashmir potentially can be switzerland of east, or you can call it other way round that time to switzerland as kashmir of west. But you can find equally beautiful region called as sikkim, it is small region. It comes above west bengal near north east India where there is no such security deployments.

And that mosque you visited is actually a shrine of a Peer (muslim saint). That's why, this mountain pass is called "Peer ki gali" (gali being Pass).

As for why so many soldiers... Kashmir is a highly volatile area. The state was transferred by a Hindu king to India. It's the only muslim majority state in India. Some time ago there was a huge communal violence and the Hindu members were butchered and thrown out of the state. Recently the state's special status was repealed in an attempt to normalise the state. Tensions are however still quite high and the border with Pakistan makes it even worse. But, as you can see it's quite safe and normal now.

Kashmir is the crown of India. It was land of Hindus for thousands of years. It successfully resisted Islamic invaders for 600 yrs from 700AD to 1300AD. Again went into Hindu hands by 1800 AD. But by that time damage has been done. Most people by that time had been forcibly converted to Islam. Only remaining was destroyed temple ruins and Hindu surnames people there had. Muslims in Kashmir still have Hindu surnames in them . that shoes that their forefathers were not interested in come inverting to Islam
