I have 2 strong hives which are preparing to swarm in March !!! when I check I noticed the queens had not laid a single egg in the frames up above in the supper, even though there was plenty of space up there!! thats true for both of these hives. so I did what Kamon suggested. I cut away all the queen cups and then I moved 2 frames of brood from deep body up to the suppers, and replaced them with 2 empty comb frames. 2 days later the hives appear to have changed their mind about swarming... I love to see multicoloured full pollen frames , it shows me that my girls are getting a good variety of flowers, I have wild flower borders in my garden that bloom at different times and keep my bees busy with hardly any travel. During July my bees are mainly on my 2 large lavender gardens, the lavender honey is my best seller, my pure lavender honey is all pre-ordered, the smell and tatste is beautiful and as the bloom is finishing they make great pot pouri, I include a small sample of the pot pouri with each jar of lavender honey

Thanks for sharing your expertise. We are living in Washington raising sheep and looking to move our sheep (now with bees) operation down your way. We have found a 240 acre farm that we are interested in and are looking at selling the frozen homestead here! My Dr. called me a dope for starting to keep bees when I have a sting allergy….but I bought a great bee suit with pockets for at least two auto-injectors so I don’t die out at the hives! Just something I’ve been wanting to do all my life and now that I’m too old to care if my livestock kills me….I’m going for it!

I am always amazed when watching American beekeepers working their hives with minimal protective gear ,and not being attacked . Your bees must be very docile . Mine would eat me alive in the same situation ! My teachers and mentors taught me to add frames of brood WITH adhering bees to the weaker hive rather than shaking the bees off the frame . It's worked for me for 30 years , but , to each his own . If it works don't fix it !!

Ip in East Central Ontario and pretty near no snow left on the ground. My bee yard sounded just like yours, this afternoon. Bees all out flying and having a great day. Hoping they start hitting the willows and elm trees. They ate the first pollen patties then have left what I put in last week. Spring is here, only supposed to be a few more nights below freezing.

@@kamonreynolds How do I feed my bees close to commercial hives? I just lost 4 of 6 strong, mite free hives. I had treated with OA and Apivar. When the commercial beekeeper pulled his production supers off they absolutely decimated my hives. I had been feeding mine for about 3 weeks prior to this. I even lost my strongest hive that was 3 boxes high and solid with bees. I restricted my hives to 1 inch openings and it did not matter. Very disappointed. Killed every bee in those hives and took all the honey and all I could do at that point was watch it happen. Should I use external feeders from now on? I had been feeding with internal feeders approximately 3 weeks prior.

Kamon, I found the subject of two Queens interesting and coincidental. I accidentally combined two queens into one hive last October. I just discovered the evidence yesterday when I found two green marked queens in the same hive.

Kamon you are a real inspiration. Love your videos. I’m from NJ and I also have a triple deep hive. We just had 80 degrees on Friday and opened them up. I am afraid of a swarm too, so this video was great to watch. Unfortunately this is the only hive I have so I can’t move resources around as you did. I plan to split them but from my understanding it’s still too early, so I need to get them to make it a few more weeks so I can make or buy a queen. Personally I would rather make my own queen. For moisture problems is their anyway to have like a special divider sandwiched with a screen mesh having paper newspaper wedged in between for a temporary effort. ? So when you notice moisture being drawn out take out the divider. It is analogous to using newspaper put inside wet muck boots and leave in for 8 or more hours to draw out the moisture.

He told you in the video. If the cups were queen cells, you got to take the queen out with a couple frames of brood & bees so they think they swarmed. Get on it or lose half your hive.

As a newbee I don't have any drawn comb. I use plastic foundation and I see the mix of plastic and starter strips. With no drawn comb to spare would starter strips be better to encourage them to draw out when splitting or anytime you are manipulating frames. Thanks, Susan N W Georgia

Thank you. Keep up the great videos. Would love to see more like those. One of our biggest challenges next to Varroa. I have 14 hives and don’t want to really increase in size. Thus not really wanting to do splits to control swarming. Equalization is great much like you did in this video. Ian Steppler also does the equalization approach with his hives. I will do that too once the snow all melts. Any other recommendations for us hobby beekeepers with 10-20 hives that just want to produce honey? This year I am testing three double nucleus resource hives. (Ie. With 2 Queens). I intend to super as Ian S. does. Great for honey production and backup production hives for next year. Have you ever tried Snelgrove boards for swarm control? I bought a couple at Dadant in Frankfort, Kentucky about a week after you visited!

A colony regulated like that is going to produce way more honey than one that is left alone and guaranteed to swarm. This early in the season, the only thing that will bottle neck a colonies honey production is swarming. *given all things are equal and no health issues.* I'd imagine they superseded your old queen last season and you just have a young and very productive queen. Queens can travel fairly easily between boxes in strong colonies. They have plenty of burr bridges and bees to bridge between box frames. I'm very on the fence about frames that are that moldy. I won't use them, I never felt it was worth taking a chance on. I had a couple colonies early one in my beek days when I used some like that and my bees got dysentery and died out. I assumed the bee bread in there was moldy and soured. Could have been nosema from a deadout I suppose but I didn't have any colonies affected except the one with the moldy bee bread comb I used.

Are those plastic frames in the colony you gave frames? I put BBQ skewers in my frames like that to help support the wax but I hadn't seen foundationless plastic frames like that.

What's your thoughts about adding boxes of foundation to these huge hives to give them something to do and add more space? I'm always in need of drawn comb and I like to take advantage of their tendency to draw comb early...especially when fed syrup. I keep a close eye for queen cells as I wait for the drones to hatch....then I'll graft and prepare to split these monsters down.

Thank you so much- excellent content. I live on the AL Gulf Coast. I had capped queen cells on my hives in mid February. I'm only in my 3rd year so I'm still trying to figure out my seasons. But this video really helped - I knew a couple of hives were super full in early February and I should have tried to split them at that point. By the next weekend, they had the capped cells. So I'm thinking I need to look at the end of January or first of February for next year. Even the new nuc I got had capped queen cells a week after install. A question: how often does it happen that there are two queens in a colony?

Its wax. You can spray it off with the hose if the mold is dry. Then shake it and set the frame 8n the sun to dry. Works great

Not harmful at all. Very normal for wild combs to mold and swarms to move in and clean them up. I highly recommend you don't let this happen to your combs though as it is rough on the combs and if damaged enough the bees won't be able to fix them.

Dont you think swarming is important? Its natures way. Rather than make a split, one could cage the queen and remove her and then the selected bees will go with her. . By then many things are established. They've picked the right egg for the new queen, they've selected who must go and stay for survival.

Hey Kamon, thanks for the videos!!! I have a couple of questions as a middle Tennessee beekeeper (hobbyist). I did my first splits yesterday despite not seeing any stored honey (I fed them) but noticed a few mites on the bottom board of mother hive..was it too early to split? should I have treated for mites already? I couldn’t find the queen and am wondering if I should have gotten a mated queen or if they will be fine to raise their own...

I take a recourse hive queen or a different queen from a hive.... cage her with some workers ...then take that the queen from the pre swarm hive..and cage her with workers... keep them inside for 2 to 3 days then swap the queens and Introduce them back in. Of course you need to add some space.. 😉 haven't tryed 2 swarmy queens yet but I would assume it would still work

Another great video. Very interesting! Just curious. When you get stung, what is your physical reaction? I see a lot of beekeepers like yourself that don't wear protective clothing all that often and I'm curious if you are less reactive to bee stings than others. Personally if I get stung I have local swelling and terrible itching for the next week or so. I have to suit up pretty much every time I go into my hives!

Hey Tom I don't itch anymore. I did for the first couple of years and so did Laurel. I got stung last week on the neck and a mosquito bite bothers me more. The initial impact hurts like it always did but the after-effects are barely noticeable

Wonderful video. I have had at least 3-4 warms this season (Memphis area). Problem I have is a lack of drawn comb like that. I fortunately have had few deadouts... so what how to you acquire so much drawn comb? Only thing I have done is to pull honey frames from bottom box and let them rob it out.

What I struggle with is "feed or not to feed". Take the weak hive you just boosted with brood - how do you know they won't take the syrup and just backfill where the brood hatches? Perhaps you don't know and are counting on the queen getting there before the syrup is stored? Will the bees necessarily build out the empty foundation frames when they can store the syrup in the brood nest?

As a new beekeeper I would suggest you feed less and more often. Pop in very gently smoke the bees and see what is happening. This is the best way to learn. Dont spend 10 minutes in there but just pull a frame or 2 see whats up and close it up. 2 minutes in the hive. A good queen with a good band of healthy bees will stay ahead of the feeding (unless you are feeding a ton)

If you found a second queen could you just add a second queen excluder and keep two brood boxes.?

You did not split this hive so how did this lessen the likelihood of them swarming? I understand that you have only one brood chamber now but you have 3 deeps on top. With this much room on top of the brood chamber, will this not give the bees in the top supers the urge to swarm? This much room with no brood? Thanks for the video's, I am at the end of my first year.

Well we pulled 2 frames of bees and brood so that will lower the population in the near future for a bit and the main thing is that the hive has plenty of room for the queen to lay. Giving the bees plenty of combs to move nectar into is critical to prevent swarming. This method won't stop them from swarming for the year. They likely will need brood pulled again in another week or two
