I think the format is _sensational._ A perfect balance of humor, brilliantly tasteful editing, great cinematography, and excellent yet succinct analysis of a very interesting subject matter. Really impressed. As for the topic, one philosopher believes we should (eventually) use biotechnology to completely eliminate predation on a global scale. Very interesting: www.abolitionist.com/reprogramming/index.html

I had frog pond as well. Birds would show up to snatch the little ones as they transformed from taddie to froggie. I defended my frogs. I even protected the teddies from being consumed by the frogs which does happen. I simply created an adult pond. All my frogs repaid my kindness by consuming the bugs which would attack my tomato plants and many others. I spent many hours of sheer enjoyment sitting by my frog ponds.

Dude just wait until some snakes colonize your pond. Then it'll get interesting. Actually it would be really cool to document the number of species that colonize your pond over time. If you want, you could even dig different sized ponds nearby and see how that affects the species that colonize them. It would be a pretty dope research project to say the least

If David and his crew had intervened, they would’ve gotten killed by the mother protecting her calf. Or they may have killed the mother in self defense. They were right not to intervene. The footage is enough to put more light on the damage those man made businesses were causing. In the scenario with your pond, you found a great solution. But though your pond is real, everything about the set up is artificial and not completely natural. It’s like setting up a terrarium but outside. So with that said, if your goal was to have a frog pond, then remove the lizards. Are you going to have the same discussion with yourself when the plants overgrow and start to take over the open body of water? Nice video man! Phil DeFranco sent me here.

You don't know what the mother Elephant would have done, and neither do I or anyone else. Some Elephants DO see humans as friends, even if they've never had any interactions with them before. A elephant was wounded by poachers, and taken to an elephant sanctuary to recover. Later, once it was released, it came back with a second elephant who was wounded. the second elephant was a stranger to the workers at the sanctuary, but allowed them to treat it's injuries anyway. Eventually some times elephants just....showed up at the Sanctuary when ever they had a problem. They'd communicated with each other that this was a safe area. Depending on rather or not that specific mother elephant or her herd had any positive interactions with humans like they David and his crew might have been able to get close enough to share some of their water supply with the baby elephant. If anything, going on the assumption that this particular herd of elephants would be hostile to their efforts and try to attack them would have been a better reason not to help. Baby sea turtles can't hurt a human. While a emotionally distraught mother elephant defending her dying child most definitely was capable of inflicting some serious pain. Both situations were man made, either from global warming, or the city lights confusing the baby turtles. But helping the baby elephant had a far greater risk of injury than helping baby sea turtles.

Generally speaking it's understood that we shouldn't interfere with nature, especially as mere spectators. In the case of the turtles, David and his crew didn't interfere with nature, but rather directed the turtles toward the path that nature intended. If they hadn't, the turtles would have suffered a way less natural outcome.
@romanski5811
@romanski5811 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, but isn't that just one big appeal to nature fallacy? I think we should intervene in nature but mainly in terms of reducing wild animal suffering. Obviously we have to be careful and considerate of ecological balances but in principle, humans should reduce wild animal suffering as much as possible in the long run because generally speaking, suffering is bad.
@AlgaeGaming
@AlgaeGaming Жыл бұрын
@@romanski5811 IIRC natural fallacy is about saying something is intrinsically good because it's natural. Here the debate is about keeping nature natural, and just about the definition of nature vs culture (man-made), I think all parties already agree that keeping nature natural is good. It's just unclear what pure nature/natural is due to the enormous impact human culture has everywhere. But if you think there's nothing wrong with interfering with nature then you'd be right in calling the other side out for saying something is good just because it's natural. Which isn't the wildest stance to take, I just assumed people didn't here.
@CrustedPork
@CrustedPork 10 ай бұрын
Humans aren't part of nature now I guess. We aren't ALSO animals apparently...Just because it's "man made" doesn't mean we are no longer animals lol. We ARE part of nature as well. So if they got ran over by cars, it's still very much natural part of nature.

Some remarks One lizard can kill many frogs, so being indifferent between lizards and frogs means placing a higher value on lizards: one lizard counts as much as many frogs because the choice is between saving one lizard versus saving many frogs. Neither the lizards, nor the frogs, nor the pond care at all if you play God and intervene in nature. You are the only one caring about not playing God. If you value not playing God above the well-being and the lives of the frogs, you are putting your own values above those of others (the frogs who value their own well-being and safety). David Attenborough didn't built the highway that threatened the turtles. The principle that we are allowed to save animals if the harm was human-caused, is arbitrary, because one could equaly propose the principle that intervening to save animals is only permissible when the harm was caused by e.g. blacks, Africans or humans not born in the UK (David is neither one of those, and the highway was built by people not born in the UK, i.e. not the group David belongs to). Or one could say that intervention is also permissible when the harm is caused by great apes, primates, mammals or vertebrates instead of humans. David is also primate, mammal and vertebrate. The harm to the frogs was caused by lizards, which are vertebrates, i.e. the group we (you, David, me) belong to, so this means we are allowed to intervene. stijnbruers.wordpress.com/2016/07/20/moral-illusions-and-wild-animal-suffering-neglect/

The line where one draws the line to intervene or not intervene is always arbitrary, subjective and self imposed. Having said that I think frog pond guy did a good thing installing a water pump to create movement on the water surface. Even if the lizards become accustomed to it it will add oxygen to the water and make it harder for mosquitoes to breed in there

I don't think we should have as a goal to not intervene in nature or leave it unaffected. I think our goal should be to make the world a better place to live for everyone, including wild animals, who make up most of Earth's population. The question of what interventions all in all make nature a better place to live is a complicated question, especially in primitive 2018, but making things better should be our main goal.
@Ididathing
@Ididathing 5 жыл бұрын
I agree although making things better is subjective word though. Mining makes things better for the mining industry.
@TorBarstad
@TorBarstad 5 жыл бұрын
@@Ididathing Cool that you agree :) The question I often ask myself is: what would I choose if I had to live everyones lives? The deer that is hunted by a human, the deer that isn't hunted by a human but instead eaten by a wolf, the additional insects that are born for whatever reason, etc. I don't think such a question removes all subjectivity. People have different perspectives on how many seconds of mildly pleasant life they would trade to not experience x seconds of being eaten alive, etc. But I do think some ways of answering "what is better?" are more and less objective/subjective than others.
