Shame you didn't talk about the Sonic classic collection on the ds, that one also got a story behind it. The main programmer was Stephan Dittrich who was a homebrew developer for a Genesis emulator called JenesisDs, he one day stopped his work and after some months he shows up in the credits of the classic collection. The Master System versions of Sonic 1, 2, & Chaos were all re-released on the Wii Virtual Console, but I get what you're saying, because the 8-bit games are generally good. It wasn't really strange to see, though, since Sonic 1 8-bit was originally made specifically for the Game Gear to help advertise that handheld, but since the MS used the same overall hardware (& was still selling extremely well in Europe), Sega also asked for a console version. In fact, Sonic 1 8-bit was the entire reason why Yuzo Koshiro even formed Ancient Corp with his family! He offered programming services, but Sega didn't make those kinds of deals with individuals, so Koshiro had to form a studio in order to start development.

I hope that SSFF delves into other Sonic topics as well - there are a lot of interesting concepts to dive into on the handheld end that feel SSFF-friendly: - All of the handheld-exclusive platformers that were fairly well-liked and promptly never seen again (Sonic Advance 1/2/3, Sonic Rush + Sonic Rush Adventures) - Some of the wildly experimental stuff on handhelds (turn-based RPG Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, arena fighter Sonic Battle, 2d racers Sonic Rivals 1+2, so many more) - SO many racing games. *so* many. And that's without even getting into the more well-trodden territory of the Wii titles, '06, and the funkiness of modern-era 3D Sonic.

There was a mobile Sonics like Sonic 2 Dash, Sonic 1, Sonic Unleashed by Gameloft and many more. Video is amazing and welcome back in these hard days. #StaySafeDerek

The first sonic game I ever played was the GBA port, and I never actually played the original version until about a decade later. When I first heard how infamous the GBA port is, I was shocked because that’s just how I thought the game was supposed to be

Okay, I need to clarify about that Virtual Boy comment. VB only sold 770,000 units worldwide. the Saturn sol 9.26 million. The Saturn flopped outside of glorious Nippon but it outpaced the Virtual Boy at least. Good lord failing to outsell the VB is like failing to outpace a 3 legged donkey.

Yes, one was on store shelves for longer. But in the initial months of ‘95, Virtual Boy outsold the Sega Saturn. They both sold poorly, but, as we said in the video “Nintendo didn’t bet the farm on the Virtual Boy and could cut it free when it failed”. Sega on the other hand, was stuck with the Saturn,

Congratulations, Derek, you convinced me to spend real money on Sonic Genesis. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you. Even though you told me not to. My stupidity can't be stopped

I don't know how many times I tried to play as Knuckles in Sonic 1 as a kid. I had dreams about it.

Sonic 1 on GBA was the first game I ever owned. I didn't realise how bad it was until years later. Can't believe it started me on my video game journey alongside Sonic X and the Pokemon anime.

One Sonic video means you're on your way to being a Sonic-centric lore and review channel. God help you.

My introduction to the sonic series' games, apart from Sonic X, was the GBA Port. I didn't know any better, but I remember thinking sonic was cool in my obliviousness

Sonic Jam was my... Jam! I still don't know how my family got a Sega Saturn but we did and with Sonic Jam. That's how I was introduced to Sonic. When I got the Collection on GameCube, I was confused as to why I couldn't do a spin dash in Sonic 1 when I remembered vividly that you were able to. I loved Sonic Jam. Spent a lot of time checking out all the extras. That Japanese cover looks awesome!

in all seriousness, the "sonic movie" it predicted is actually the 1999 OVA (which did get an english dub), which is known for being one of the best game to film adaptations.

4:54 there WAS a Smash Pack 2, though it wasn't designated as a "volume". It released on PC in 2000, had Flicky, Sonic 2, Vectorman 2, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon, and Super Hang-On.
