Man your explanation on the cables was on point. I had ordered 2 HDMI 2.1 cables for my Series X and PS5. They needed to be about 10ft or longer because they have run through the wall since my TV is mounted. And when they came in I was wondering why there were so thick. I've being trying to find answers as to why they were so thick and you answered it.

Excellent thanks for great advice. I ordered the optical hdmi 2.1 Ruipro 33ft. Currently using 25ft hdmi 2.0 copper from Denon AVR to LG 65" CX Edit: since received the 33ft Ruipro, works fine without the active usb power. Ordered a 2nd 33ft optical hdmi to run through floor to basement PC.

Most of these arguments made sense when there was a big price difference in cables. But now for the lengths I need (~6ft) the difference between the basic 2.0 cable from Monoprice and the 2.1 in-wall rated cable is like $2-$3. Given that it's not the easiest thing to do to run the cable through the wall, I'd rather just get the 2.1 cable and know that I'm covered for the next 10+ years.

You always inform us about what the deal is with the things we think we need. 2.0 HDMI is good enough for most people and you pointed that out. 2.1 you said is for a special purpose for certain situations and you also pointed that out. I started watching your content to help me decide which OLED TV to buy, and have done that (I went with the Sony Bravia A80J 55"), but your content remains so interesting and informative that I keep watching (and have subscribed to your KZbin channel of course). I would nit-pick your recommendation for gaming "locked at 4K 60Hz" - VRR can still matter since some of the frames will take longer to produce and drop below the 60FPS (60Hz) mark, and in that case VRR can help smooth out your experience. You would need the game to have 1% (and .1%) lows that remain at or above 60Hz to make it so VRR doesn't matter, and I don't think there are many games that will run, even on the best hardware available today, that will never drop below 60 FPS at 4K. (Obviously my choice of TVs wasn't based on gaming - I have a different setup for that - but for those buying with gaming in mind I'd personally recommend getting a TV with a GOOD VRR implementation.)

EARC has its place if you are going from HDMI 2.1 TV with Xbox Series X/PS5 to say a a pre 2021 receiver EARC 2.0b like stated. 120hz framerate direct to TV, that way with lossless ATMOS to the receiver or storage files with lossless. Also your TV as a switch could have a use case with upconversion, it works better with TV than receiver, and less in the chain for degradation. You can still run legacy 2.0 devices (4k bluray, etc), component/RGB, and composite connections through your receiver as a switch. TV/Projector will always have the latest connection upgrades way before a receiver as well. Didn't get HDMI 2.1 until this year in receivers and most didn't do it right and need an external box.

A couple use cases not illustrated and very important. If you are going to fish a longer cable for a projector for gaming, you need it to be long, you need to be flexible, you need to have a head connector to go through 3/4in or 20mm and you want to futureproof because it can be quite a hassle to run/fish that cable. The RUIPRO has a head of only 0.69in which is perfect.

Another great informative video! Currently utilizing the internal apps on my A8H OLED SONY tv. Would the APPLE 4KTV purchase improve the quality of the audio & picture significanlty enough to justify the addition? Currently have the SONOS arc system connected via eARC , which I just learned from you, it does not make any difference for the audio. Julio

Going back to the length of Cable runs and what is preferred and what works best I’ve been running 50 feet runs and copper wire 2.0 with no problems due to the fact that you can add junctions for boosters This is usually done for a splitter. May take a feed from a cable box to a splitter to multiple TVs in your home. Between the power of the splitter in the power of the TV I have yet to have any problems and if I do have a problems, a simple, USBHDMI power add this in that issue

There is still alot of confusion on eArc and hdmi 2 vs 2.1. I ordered both and am going to do a test. One of the big applications for using eArc is having an older av reciver that is non HDR and does not support eArc. I bought an orei eArc sound stripper that will allow me to take my audio via eArc and strip the audio into an hdmi port on reciver. Blue ray, direct TV, and eArc are running to TV for best picture and audio is returning uncompressed for blue ray and dlna server which has 7.1 true HD sources. Will see if it works.. It will cost a few hundred but much better option than dropping 3k on a new av just for video and support of HDR

So I got a Q90A recently and I am also trying to get audio set up in the next couple months (new aprt) I am planning on getting a ps5(disk for bluray functionality) and have a high end PC. I have been thinking about getting the HW-Q900A or Q950A some time early next year for the gaming surround features. I am also planning to buy a new turntable(thinking Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Evo) for the vinyls I have been collecting and am trying to figure out if there is a viable way to set up my vinyl playback in a way where playing from the Q900 would make sense from a sound quality perspective or if I would just be better served buying a more traditional speaker set up and using that for all my home audio needs.) are there amplifiers that would do well paired with such a high number of channels or is the audio coming off the vinyl just not engineered in a way where the sound bar surround system would handle them well? hope the question makes sense. I haven't been able to find much resources talking hifi connectivity to these new soundbar systems.

I see active or aoc cables, but the description notes does not require external power. You state use active so you don't strain the equipments power supply. Can you explain? Also, I don't see any aoc fiber hdmi with a separate power source. The one you show is the type I described. Power is from hdmi port. Please list some hdmi fiber cables with external pwr source.

Thanks for the video I saved I few bucks because I was going to buy 8k hdmi for my Apple TV 3rd generation and it was pointless,I noticed that I have 1.4 high sped hdmi right now and when I am watching Netflix or hbo max it suddenly shuts down, I suppose is because of the 1.4 hdmi,I have it plugged to a Samsung tv ru8000 model

Dosent earc enable 5.1 and 7.1 .. does earc need hdmi 2.1? Some say you need an hdmi cable with Ethernet in it(Samsung)… also the lg c1 has feature to use tv speakers with a sound bar or wisa does that require earc and 2.1?

Hi, fantanstic video. Very informative. I got a sound bar HWQ850A (that you mentioned in your best budget sound bar). I find that the rear surround channels are very week (+6) and the same for the top firing channels (+6). Have you heard that and some suggestions to fix it. Second, what do you think about Q symphony? Is it worth it? Thanks

How tall are your ceilings? Anything more than 8 or 10 ft Vaulted/High ceilings wont work with Up-firing speakers or ATMOS "toppers" on top of your fronts. You will need dedicated down-firing ATMOS speakers mounted to your front / back walls to be able to get the best sound. Bouncing audio signal off the ceiling losses a LOT of sound in a very short distance. SVS Prime Elevations are good if you want to go that route.

Great video. Im in the edge use case and I can say hes right. But in defense of eARC. Hes right that most technology is years away from fully supporting the advantages eARC brings. However, today PS5 also supports VRR (Like the Xbox SX) via update so its starting to become more relevant overall. And again, he right that most games will not be played at 4k 120HZ. But most next gen games will have the option from going quality mode with VRR which is 4k 40FPS vs 2k 80-100FPS. VRR is absolutely essential for this. Most soundbars/AV receivers HDMI pass throughs DO NOT support 120FPS and/or VRR even if they support HDMI 2.1. So having eARC allows you to maintain max graphics that your shiny new hardware is capable of while sending the uncompressed surround sound audio through the tv to the soundbar. But this is an expensive setup. TVs that support 4k 120HZ are usually over a grand. And soundbars with enough speakers that can fully support 7.1 uncompressed audio are over a grand as well. Lastly youd need to get a device like a blu ray player or a ps5/xbox series x that can actually provide the content.

So, if I wanted to connect a XSX to my TV via HDMI 2.1, would it be enough to then use a HDMI 2.0 cable from the TVs eARC to the AVR? The goal would be to game at 4k 120 and still use my dedicated home theater system, which by itself doesn’t support HDMI 2.1, so connecting the XSX directly to the AVR wouldn’t be an option.

I’m going crazy here. So the vivify 2.0 cable is active or isn’t active? I just ordered it in a 50 ft length but now I’m looking at it and I can’t figure out if it’s active or not. I thought in the video it said you need an active cable?

First time here. Great video. Can I buy a cheaper AVR that only supports 2.0 and just run ARC from my TV to it for sound? I have enough HDMI ports on my TV for it to act as the switch, but 2.1 AVRs are ridiculously expensive compared to non-2.1, and I really want to get into the home theater world soon. I'd love to do 5.1.4 Atmos, but 9 channel receivers with 2.1 are crazy expensive right now, and used 9 channel ones are cheaper on eBay

Also, my TV supports 2.1 so I don't need to worry about that for audio reasons, except for my PS5 and Xbox Series X, though I wonder how much benefit I'll really get out of compressed vs. uncompressed sound effects and such.
