pretty. good informative video. I usually pot Phals into moss. that is why I lose them , even though they are planted in moss at purchase. its a warm climate here
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai3 жыл бұрын
Phal roots work best with plenty of air around them but can be potted in moss if is not compacted. In hot climates, using something like bark can mean VERY frequent watering.

Roger; by coincidence, my daughter (non orchid person) just found some phals at a DIY stores...it was "pretty blooms, must have", AND "half price" (she bought 4). The thing is, most people won't look in the pot and certainly won't repot them. I pointed my daughter to this series, but she doesn't have the right size pots, and doesn't want to spend money on orchid bark. I know what will happen: she'll take haphazard care of them, keep them in the dark, forget to water them, then give them to me to rescue for her. Sadly, some people never get beyond the "pretty blooms" part to caring enough to keep them alive.

The 'business model' for the store-bought cheap Phals is to throw them away after blooming and buy another one.

Hi Roger! I’ve figured out that my environment is too dry for bark only mix. Now, I’m trying to discern which of the mixes is best....(excuse to buy more orchids). All of my plants are either actively growing or in full bloom potted in bark/ moss mixed (except one in pebbles). I bought coconut lined hanging basket for I have no idea yet- maybe Ascda/Vanda later. I reused a bundt cake plastic dome- like case as an ICU for one Phal my great aunt who hates orchids “accidentally” knocked on the floor, breaking it’s decorative pot, aerial roots, one leaf and a flower spike. So much for house guests. Anyway- Heidi (NOID) loved being outside sitting on a pedestal in that case filled at the base with RO H20, lid cover alternates with fan blowing as she immediately got perky & threw out several roots and a new leaf. She’s my first miniPhalaenopsis & favorite color:Purple. Happy growing!💕✨

In dry atmospheres, two choices - either use a more moisture retentive media or water more often, As long as there is plenty of air around the roots, whatever media is used should be ok.

Another great instructive video! I wish these had been produced when I start Phal growing! I buy my bark from spiceotic plants, on eBay in the U.K. and it’s very good quality bark, Sumatran pine, in 5 litre amounts which they sell in differing sizes, small, medium or large. This info is for a grower with less orchids who would find a sack too much. Thanks Roger👏👍😊

I love this repotting video I especially like the idea where you said to twist the pot around so the roots don't break so they sort of find a place as you said. Because I think I may be breaking my roots when I repot my orchids even though I put them in a much bigger pot than they came from the supermarket. I used a clay pot that's made for orchids and I'm just wondering if putting a few rocks at the bottom is a help or a hindrance and those clay pots. Especially like the fact that you said the real Roots is that white cord that's under the vellum. And your explanation that the velum is like a sponge that absorbs moisture and nutrients out of the air and in the medium well done thank you so very very much
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
The rocks will help make the pot/plant stable (as long as they don't block the drainage holes).

@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
It depends on how good the existing media is. Putting an orchid in a larger pot will mean the old media is enclosed and retained - it will obviously break down sooner than the new media around the edges.

I have seen some videos that other people have done where the bark is soaked in water before potting the phal. Is it better to pot phal in dry bark?
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
I prefer to use it dry as wet bark tends to stick together and doesn't 'fall' into all the gaps. It does mean watering more often for a while though until the bark starts to hold more moisture.

Hey Roger - Is alcohol enough to sterilize your cutting tool? I thought you also had to flame it to kill everything?
@suepetras6075 жыл бұрын
Also, do you repot any time of year?
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
If the alcohol is allowed to dry then it's ok, flaming the blades speeds up the process. I repot when the plant is at the right stage (new roots showing) - any time.

Great video, I bought Orchard bark and I also bought Orchid potting soil, maybe that is one that you said to avoid? The orchard bark I have is different to yours so I'm unsure what type to buy or maybe just stick with the one I have as I only have 1 orchid at the moment, I googled Orchid Accessories but couldn't see a website for the guy you mentioned but then again I am in Scotland so I would probably have to order online, so what are the 2 different types of bark you are using, if you don't mind me asking?

Good luck on the US ever switching to metric anytime soon. As kids, we were told we would change in our lifetime, I really don't see it happening before I die. Sadly, they don't even teach it anymore in school until you start getting into the specialty sciences (e.g. chemistry, physics) which is a step backwards.

My brother was an engineer. I used to be a research scientist. I at one time had a bumper sticker that said “go metric”. I went to visit my brother and he said he was afraid his colleagues would come and tar and feather him and me because of that sticker. Our US engineers are, and were, taught inches, feet, and yards as well as ounces, pounds and tons.
