Welcome Shiny, Crafty people! Tim Totten here with sewing projects you can do yourself!
This ridiculously-easy project is part of a series where we take a store-bought quilt and turn it into easy-to-make projects. Many of these projects are home dec items or great gifts for family and friends.
I don't know if you've priced quilted placemats lately, but you might need a mortgage if you have more than four seats at your dining table! Well, maybe that's too hyperbolic, but seriously, nice quilted placemats can cost $10-30 depending upon design and materials. And the variety available may not fit your decor.
Using a store-bought quilt means that for just a few dollars, you can have a full matching set, along with a number of other great items for your home that creates a cohesive design to your dining and kitchen elements.
This is a variation on the first placemat project, which you can find here: • Store-Bought Quilt Hac...
And I adapted a technique for this that I learned from another amazing creator on KZbin here: • Такому подарку на Рожд...
To make this easy placemat, you'll need the following:
1 Store-bought quilt (I used a king-size Walmart quilt that cost $29.95)
1.5" strips of coordinating fabric
Scissors or rotary cutter
Straight edge or cutting grid
Thread
Sewing Machine
I made this project in just 22 minutes but you could easily do several at once and take perhaps 1 hour to make a set of 4. Buy a general patterned quilt that doesn't have to be fussy-cut to fit certain elements and you'd be able to get dozens of placemats out of each quilt!

Again, another excellent video with great beginner tips. Store-bought and thrifted bedspreads are great for making matched sets of multi-sized boxy bags (the ones that are folded at the ends), since the sides can be altered depending on the side chosen for the outside.

Hey, Timothy! Great variation of the self-binding method! The added strip takes the project to another level! I’m going to do this for my current smaller projects. I might even stitch in the ditch-and tacking it to the inside corner along the way-to create a flange. You might consider using hand-or other-weights to hold your ruler. I started doing this with my straight and Stripology rulers after watching Donna Jordan’s videos. It has been a game-changer for me! Keeping in mind, that SOME people might describe me as being ‘long in the tooth”. 😂🤣😂 I figure that it will also pay off in the long run, since it reduces stress my hands and wrists. Thanks for sharing, and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦

when you cut this out do you make it an inch larger all the way around to get the finished size of a placemat
