Another great tip. I have an ample supply stored. Enjoyed your story/ history of salt as well. Thx MDP

I get free icing buckets with killer sealing lids at my local bakery free. 3 1/2 gallon size. I soak in white vinegar and dish soap to get rid of icing smell. I buy huge quantities of pink Himalayan sea salt. I have one huge bucket of it. Enough for my lifetime. These buckets stack 3 high when filled with water. Any higher puts too much stress on the bottom bucket. I keep everything in these buckets, beans, oats, med supplies. Bonus is all are food grade. Can be adapted to use with black Berkey filters for a cheaper but still excellent water filter.

I'm pretty confident with the amount we currently have, about 75 kg (~165 lb) for two adults and two kids. But I plan to get some more as it is so cheap and stores for ever. In a bigger event with no refrigeration salt would be in high demand and an outstanding bartering item as well.

I have a few 5 gallon buckets filled with salt, sealed in Mylar. Also make sure it is actually sodium chloride salt if you get the water softener. Remember, salt is more then just THAT type of salt. Many water softener are magnesium salt.

Mine is 100% sodium chloride

Oh I am sure you checked before hand. I was just mentioning it for everyone else.

I found 50lb water softener blocks for $10 at the local ace hardware. It's important to verify that its sodium chloride. There's no iodine in it though. The blocks fit in a bucket. I think I have two of them. EDIT: must watch full video before comments... suffice to say our ideas on this matter are in sync...

What comments explain the application of the salt stored? I saw 1 descriptor of table salt, Ive not had salt on the table or cook range for 20 years, co sumers are OD'd on salt,

Is that container some kind of compressed paper or cardboard? Wondering how long that kind of thing is good for.

That's just my table salt as a stand-in. I didn't feel like dragging a 25 lb bag from the storage shed to the upstairs office.

"Salt of the earth" blah blah, the application was then (antiquity) beneficial for preservations of food. In a pre columbian region of soith america salt was more valuable than gold. Salt was production iodized in the 40s for populations lack of iodine, It has been manipulated as sugar has been, it is required in adequate quantities for the propper applications, I dont believe we are short on consumption of salt but prioritize applicstion by benefit

salt is very useful to preserve meat, and we need salt to stay hydrated, thats why sweat tastes salty, because your body is losing salt.

At a minimum. More is always better as it would be a widely popular trade item.
