Thanks for the inside tour! I worked at Dillard’s in the mall in 1994 and I believe that was the last time I’ve been in that JCPenney! It’s held up well and looks exactly as I remembered. They really had to “cram” that store in there when they were building it because the available footprint was so limited. They had to take out a mall entrance and Morrison’s Cafeteria to make it fit.

Of course! This store is special to me as well, so I was glad to share it with the world in the form of a video. I’m sure it was tough to cram that size building in a mall that’s only a single level. I heard that Morrison’s was lost in the remodel. It’s interesting that they had to take it out to fit the JCP. Honestly, JCP seems to be this mall’s strongest anchor. I can’t confirm this, but it appears that it is.

Interesting fact, they were about to start renovations to the JCPenney at Citadel Mall to add a Sephora when it closed. I can’t believe that JCP came back to Citadel Mall a 2nd time after operating there previously in the former Thalhimers building and closing. Maybe they’ll try for a 3rd time in the Gemstone’s building 😂

Wow, I didn’t know they were planning for a Sephora at the Citadel JCPenney. I looked on Google Maps for shots of what the store looked like before MUSC took over. Surprisingly, it wasn’t too different. All that I noticed were the awnings with the ramps built outside of both entrances. Otherwise it looked pretty much the same. As much as I wish the Citadel JCPenney location could’ve remained profitable, I’m glad there’s a business in its place that’s literally helping the community. I believe JCP is focused on rebuilding its finances and trying to regain some of its market share back from competitors like Kohl’s, Target, TJMaxx, and others. So, as cool as it would be to see JCP return to Citadel for a 3rd time, I doubt they’d do it. Since that old Sears is only a ground floor store as well, they’d have to do some rearranging.

Yes, that’s about the only change to the exterior - the two awnings and the pair of windows they added on either side of the main entrance. That traditional 1980’s style architecture with those futuristic awnings to me looks a little weird!

The shoe department looks a little bleh with all of the racks. It reminds me of how a discount shoe store would look vs a traditional department store shoe dept layout.

Yeah, I see what you mean. When I was filming a closing Sears, I remember seeing their shoe department looking similar. Interesting feature of this location. Thanks for watching!
