Stored DC RAIL Class 60's - WILL these Locos Survive? UP CLOSE views at Loughborough

So it''s been 12 months since the DC Rail purchase of class 60 locos from DB. These locos were quickly moved from Toton to UKRL/Wabtec at Loughborough (former Brush facility).
After visiting to see what has changed 12 months later - It seems not a great deal has happened unfortunately. All locos are still in the same positions and look to be unchanged.
Will these 'Tugs' survive? Surely as more and more time passes, it's looking unlikely that a mainline return will happen..
See up close footage of the condition of these British classic locos sadly now looking forlorn and unloved.

As a railwayman of some 37 years and a current serving driver of nearly 25 years and having driven 15 forms of traction, I have to say that the class 66 is a superb locomotive, strong and reliable. Very reliable. Since 2005 I have only had 6 locos fail on me that I couldn’t fix. I recall a week on class 47’s where I failed at least one a day! The 60’s are good but are far from reliable. Maybe with rebuilding with a GM engine they might be an excellent loco after all..

60008/038/090 could be usable as they look less wrecked. Maybe GE could rebuild them but with 60014 at EMD for whatever reason and a demand for freight locomotives being high. Perhaps some could be gutted and rebuilt with GE or EMD parts for a Class 62 or Class 64 type. So I wouldn't rule further use just yet. I still think GE could do something with these Class 60's though as they are more or less a Dash 8 in terms of the tech.

Presumably if they were all for scrapping buyers would have expressed an interest whilst the Locos were parked up at Toton. Would then have made sense to just Tow them or transport them straight to the Recyclers yard for breaking.

I was speaking to someone from Brush yesterday, and it appears that some are for component removal and a couple “could” be destined for test beds for future engine designs (possibly electric/hybrid).

They could well be used for spares. edit: 60 061 has a sign on the window saying brakes non operational.

Hopefully a few preservation groups or something will be able to secure them and return them to operational condition

I believe there was more 60s being stored last time I was there, there was two groups instead of one group which makes me think that either one group has been transported to another company or wasn’t captured on camera as there definitely is more than one group of 60s there.

There is a possibility that some of them may be saved or reborn into something new. There is probably more going on in offices working out to see newer engines or conversion into hybrid locos.

When I worked for EWS / DBC I suggested ten years ago that a 60 be re engined with a GM 710 power unit or larger. Up grade its traction control. You could have a 4000 hp loco that would be far better than the 69's

Such a waste of resources that many of the 60s were stored when they were little more than 10 years old It is certainly not impossible to re-activate at least some of them (Some of the class 37s currently operational with UKRL were in similar condition before they were re-activated)

UKRL doesn't operate Class 37s.

If new Diesels are banned then returning these to service may be an option as long as operators are not hung up on being carbon neutral (maybe return these to service and plant a load of trees at the same time?), or they may be suitable for conversion similar to the class 56 to 69 program. Failing all that, it would be good to see a few more preserved (some more 58's as well since they're mostly just rusting away on the continent)

As long as a couple of the class end up in preservation, no great loss for the others. They are hardly deltics, westerns, peaks, warships.

GBRF took a loco from the buffers at Booths scrapyard for class 69 conversion. Nothing is too far gone.
