The characters of Tagore’s stories spring into life through the imagination and vision of acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Basu in ‘Stories By Rabindranath Tagore’. Stories By Rabindranath Tagore shares with us the intricately etched characters created by the master himself and brought to the small screen by the visionary director of ‘Barfi’ and ‘Life in a Metro.’
Set in a politically volatile period, the stories are constantly shifting in the social world of the early twentieth century in undivided Bengal. The hub of new India, Calcutta is the melting pot where our protagonists are pouring in from their rural, social and cultural spaces to encourage this upcoming new world.
Basu retains Tagore’s style of narrative even in the visual medium and enhances words of his pages by bringing in talent that truly captures the essence of each his beloved characters. Unlike ordinary characters, these personalities pack a rebellious punch. They break the traditional paths and root themselves into our hopeful hearts. We fight alongside them as the break out from their socio-religious confines.
Tagore, the most articulate feminist of his times, saw his women as intelligent, adventurous, chance takers and almost always resisting the family and the social establishment. Tagore, thus, constantly makes his characters push boundaries, question authority, norms and customs and makes his characters intriguing and endearing too. The audience, in our times too, will find this world engaging as well as challenging; feel attached to their emotions, issues, drama and anxieties.
Basu delves deeper into this society in transition, with songs, music, cultural references and its newfound political and social manifestations, a little more than the actual described world within Tagore’s narratives. Tagore’s words and Basu’s vision have amalgamated into a show that transports you back in time to a world as complicated as this one but with far more to lose.

the way they potray widows wearing backless saree that's not right way. My grandmother also told me that time wearing no blouse was not all widows used to do that. They cover back with saree only. Not the way they potrayed in the series

I watched all stories in Netflix. I watched them over and over and will keep on going as I am very picky viewer. This is something to keep. I had a chance to read some of Tagor's short stories while schooling in Toronto. Thanks Netflix and the show makers for this one. It is a blessing for me.

I have just completed the novel, and also the tv series, yes it is true that they have distorted a bit, but only very few minute things, the essence remains just as intact. I felt that, the way Tagore wanted to portray Binodini, Mahendra and Bihari, Ashalata, Anurag basu has followed it the same way, keeping flaws in all the characters, whereas Rituparna Ghosh has modified the essence of the characters

I am just mesmerized after watching Chokher Bali episodes... I'm just unable to move out from these characters... Just salute to R N Tagore & Anurag Basu and yes offcourse actors who has given their 100%. I had waited whole day in my office for 6 pm to resume this story but it's ended now. I was thinking that, it should be never ending story & I will watch only this movie. I was feeling like I was here & there near them and I was every where there Is Binodini & Bihari. This is epic.
