it seems obvious to me , after seeing this, that the commercial catch allowed was much too high. the only thing to do is to accept the pain and limit the catch drastically. it makes no sense to blame recreational fishers or trawlers, when the overwhelming amount caught was/is by commercial fishers.

The biggest mistake ever made by Tasmanian fisheries hierarchy was reducing the size of female crayfish back in the sixties, just to satisfy a group of greedy fishermen,by making this stupid decision all it achieved was removing millions of breeding stock, someone has finally heard the penny drop by moving hundreds of thousands of fish from the south west to restock the east coast, unfortunately it will take many years for this to make any difference, and then i fear that we will have the same problem where they are taking these restocking fish from, the simplest way to avoid this getting worse is to increase the size of female crayfish statewide by ten millimetres, i know it wouldn't be very well accepted by the commercial sector but without some short term pain we won't have a sustainable crayfish industry for the future
