Mendoza invented the hook I think and had one of the best uppercuts in history of fighting IMHO. Phenomenal in-fighter who also could hit from both stances. I read his entire manual, it's fascinating. The first great technical boxer of the era, many of today's knowledge come from him. Great video & pulover. Thanks for covering pugilism. Cheers brother.

Another excellent video. I've missed these. I know you have been bombarded with suggestions since your return but one thing that I would be fascinated to see a video on would be a discussion and description of the training methods from the age of pugilism. What was considered "scientific" training at the time, etc. Thanks!!

I've only just found your channel and do have a question I hope you can explain to me and all the others. I know Queensbury rules but would like to know the rules covering boxing before the Marquis of Queensbury rules. I have been told of London fairground rules but never have heard them explained and I know of rules before even those but again no explainations. Have a very merry Christmas and I like the jumper.
@EnglishMartialArts6 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the channel! If you watch the video I did on Jack Broughton I talk a little about the rules he introduced. They were the first commonly accepted rules, and the ones that started the slow process of removing all the interesting bits from boxing! Merry Christmas to you too.

I just have one question: how did men fight for such a long time in the past, when today some matches may not even last a round?
@elmikeomysterio54966 жыл бұрын
Because they didn't use gloves, so there were less k.o's and the mass of the gloves wasn't there. This means the fight would be mostly body blows and the occasional cheek shot, with some headbutting and grappling involved.
@donovanchilton58176 жыл бұрын
No gloves m8.

What they said!
@goodheavens54404 жыл бұрын
gloves dont create ko's. yes you can hit harder with gloves because the impact on your hand will be less than without them. but im pretty sure every time someone fell to the floor or took a knee the round would reset. So you could imagine with every slip, knockdown and knee took out of desperation to keep the fight going would create a scenario where two people could fight 75 rounds and last nearly 2 hours.

Professional Bareknuckle boxing has had a resurgence in America with the World Bareknuckle Fighting Federation and others holding professional bouts in the United States of America now. One may find video footage of some of these bouts on youtube, although most of the fighters being from MMA and gloved boxing backgrounds aren't familiar with the proper art of bareknuckle boxing striking and safe knuckle landing espoused by champions like Jack Dempsey. So due to their striking bareknuckle the same way that they do with wraps and gloves many have suffered broken hands. One fighter in fact broke 'both' hands during a bareknuckle professional bout. It's my hope that MMA shall remove the gloves and hand wraps, making the combat sport more honest and less lethal which will force the fighters to rediscover and implement the old school bareknuckle methods of pugilistic boxing. The only real issue being encountered in the American professional bareknuckle boxing bouts are presumably accidental thumb gouges to the eyes and broken hands. The pronating of the fists I believe causes some of the accidental thumb jabs to the eye (assuming their accidental) and parrying open handed while clenching the fist late during the strike would be another cause of accidental thumb jabs to the eye, which is why in older times in America bareknuckle boxing bouts required contestants to hold coins in their fist and to drop them would result in disqualification or loss...Something ideas that today's professional bareknuckle fighting federation in America should consider.

Mendoza met Hugh Laurie?! (Terrible, Terrible joke, had to be said). That Sailor was a bloody idiot. Mendoza reminds me of a much more physical Alexander Hamilton, far from stupid but thin skinned and obsessed with his image, nor did he stop working (fighting). It be interesting to talk to him.
