Summary:
The Stories of Old Greece and Rome is an easy to read summary of all of the famous and not so famous Greek and Roman mythological stories. All of the famous Heroes are here: Theseus, Jason, Hercules, and all of the well known Deities. These stories tell the real detail of the myths, not the ones that have become sanitized (and dare I say it, 'Disneyfied') over the centuries. These are not stories for children, as the old gods and heroes were vengeful and some might say sadistic in their treatment of minor slights and misdemeanors. Putting out of eyes and ripping out of tongues is commonplace, and punishment by death is ever present. i LOVED this. my only issue (which is with the book not the reader) is that they used the roman names for the gods.. but its stories from greece/set in greece/used greek hero names etc. Feels like a weird choice to then only refer to the gods by their roman names.

They use both. Since it's Greek and Roman stories.

@@LittleImpaler Specifically the story about "The Judgement of Paris," which is entirely Greek. Maybe its my own prejudice, but the Greek names seem to fit better with the story. And I know the Greek gods a little better than I know their Roman counter-parts, and I think there were differences.

@@andyjackson3414 The Romans were such fan boys of the Greek. They copy the Greek in everything. It doesn't really matter. Roman gods where just Greek gods with different names.

@@LittleImpaler Mostly true. And many of the "Roman" historians we get our information from were Greek. The Romans also welcomed other foreign gods into their pantheon. They were very inclusive and tolerant, as long as their gods were respected and honored as well. That's the impression I get anyway. How did the Greek gods become Roman gods? It must have happened before the Roman conquest of Greece.

@@andyjackson3414 it's because of trade routes. A lot of stories from the Eutresean myths (Roman myths we know existed) and either the Minoan or Mycenaean mythos of Greece (before the conquest of Alexander the Great which brought the Archaic period) got talked about. This caused a lot of sychrenization of the gods. This happened while the Roman mythos was an oral tradition (nothing got written down) and when Greece was just starting to write their mythos. There are a few differences between them though. Saturn was seen as a harvest god alongside the traits we associate with Kronos of the Greek mythos Mars wasn't nearly as blood thirsty as Ares and was seen as a farming/harvest god as well. Sorry for the long reply, just wanted to explain a bit.

excellent reading and tales..you can easily see how some biblical tales are actually rewritten greek tales with name changes and other alterations.. to seem middle eastern and jewish in faith,, makes you think...

very much so.. especially with romans, which romans tales come from the greek.. early christians practically rewrote a lot of the bible to make the romans like it
