We hear from men who sought the valuable Huon Pine in the iconic Franklin River. They describe track cutting, packing supplies, cooking and living in the wet rain forest of Tasmania's West Coast.

I ask myself. How much am I willing to pack in? Everything you had, and everybody, meant everything to everyone else. Lovely hard wearing hard working gentlemen.

My grandfather lived at Launceston and had a holiday home in Vic at Indented Head. He had fully renovated the holiday home before retiring there using Huon all through and also had a small mountain of Huon stored in the shed. After he passed my parents sold the home but left the timber behind not knowing it's rarity. I visited once and met the new owner who happened to be a retired wood-turner. He said that the timbers value was the equivalent of winning the lottery. Some pieces were 8mts X 500mm posts.

Thank you for keeping this history Gary. I'm a recent arrival to tasmania (3 years) and your videos have brought the history of the timber industry to life.

Wow..I thought it was hard planting trees in the snow and 3rd pruning with 5 metre ladders in the winter, then going north and brushcutting doing 25 kms on foot a day in 34 to 40 degree heat 6 days a week but that's crazy..and we had food and accommodation..I understand when he says he doesn't care if anybody believes him if he did it or not coz we did
