Jordy R Dude... DUDE. When a band goes from one genre they executed well, to another genre that they ALSO execute well, what's not to like? Then there are bands that just go for a more mainstream/dumbed down alt.rock/nu-metal sound like WCAR, which sounds like fucking garbage. These guys sound top fucking notch. Something this scene needs more of.

Well that's just like your opinion man.. Hehe, nah but I'm serious, I'm not saying I disagree with you, but I bet the guys from WCAR truly believe that this is what they want and need to make for their band to progress. And remember, progress doesn't always has to be more technical/heavy ect. Same as with Born Of Osiris and Northlane. Music is subjective and you might think it's fucking garbage, but they probably attract an audience that really digs their new stuff, or feels like it's a logical next step for the band within the current industry. Their probably are a shit ton of people who are not into the new style Stories is going with, but it's rare to see the vocal majority like 'change' these days.

Jordy R well yeah you make a good point, and BMTH are going in a similar direction, but for me personally WCAR just sounded kind of flat and repetitive, while if we take new BMTH singles like Throne and Drown, those are so much more jammable and different. It's just preference of course, but I still think there's that perfect balance between evolving/changing your sound and not becoming too mainstream. Eh in the end it's as you said all preference and very subjective, I try to embrace change but when a band does a 180 and goes for too much 2000s nu-metal/alt.rock without making it memorable I just stop listening and move on. What interests me though - what will be the next album for bands like BMTH (new album will be varied as hell, but their softest yet), OMAM, WCAR, which all kind of went for a more radio rock/mainstream sound after sounding heavy. Will they just rehash the same album that got them more mainstream attention or will they go back to their roots and have something in between?

DarkLT4Ewa Interesting point, I'm curious to that as well. In the end we have to realise that a band (especially at that scale) is other to a bunch of musicians, a business. Peoples salary are depending on their sales. If they realise a certain sound works better, they might consider writing another album in the same vein. And on top of that there is the pressure of a label. UNFD is going for a certain sound with their bands and if Stories came by saying they wanted to release a jazz album (which I would consider a '180'), I doubt UNFD would fully support them on that. Labels tend to push their band in a direction the industry is heading at that moment. Not too long ago it was the djenty, chugging riffs every band was going with, now bands seem to get 'softer' and more alt rockish. Besides that, people tend to be influenced by their surroundings. If all the band on your tour are well received with their radio friendlier music, it doesn't surprise me if that influences you.

Underoath were such a unique and versatile band, they created a sound with Define the Great Line and hardcore both peaked and died with Lost in the Sound of Separation. They didn't need a repetitive djenty breakdown every minute accompanied with immature vulgar lyrics which sadly is what hardcore has become. It's great to see stories go in another direction and go with stuff like this and applaud them for it but I would love to see them (and other bands for that matter) bring something fresh to the table and give hardcore the rekindle it sorely needs. - Former Hardcore fan 2004-2008 era
