I wish all engineers took such pride in their work. I bought a house where the gas installer seemed to be the most lazy half-assed engineer in the world: leaky and damaged radiator bleed valves causing pressure loss (previous homeowner thought it was normal), terrible soldering (really sloppy and all down the copper, far too much used), uninsulated pipes, pipes too thin & bent instead of using corner joints, pipes too close to floorboards causing creaky floors. Then I had an install of a heat pump to turn it into a hybrid system, and they decided to neglect insulating the pipes on the lower floor, just because they couldn't access them - but they didn't tell me this, they just threw the insulation in the loft... Not only this but the heat pump installer said pressure loss is normal also!!! I've been slowly correcting the mistakes...

As you know because you literally pointed it out in the video- You only need to run either the wire going to A1 or A2 to break the circuit to the coil in the contactor through the switches. I always break A1 which is the phase the systems I build and connect the neutral to A2 or if it is 24v it is G to A1 and G0 to A2 or 24v+ A1 and 24v- A2 depending on the coil voltage on the contactor/relay. You often do not need to involve a inverter to take power from solar panels for powering a resistance load for heating as only a duty cycle limit to keep the resistance element from overheating ( melting ) and a thermostat to limit heated material ( in this case water ) from overheating ( in this case water from boiling and then causing a steam explosion ) . A bimetallic thermostat switch may have a maximum current but no minimum current and its lifespan is enhanced by use of low voltage and current through transistor controlling ( with snubber protection) the power to a relay ( usually called a contacter ? ) multipole single throw relay ) ) thus no need for the exorbitant expense of inverters for heating .
@corymac Жыл бұрын
These aren’t inverters, they’re diverters. They have the inverters on the home anyways, these just track the excess power and send it to the heating rather than exporting ( wasting ) it
@Andy100ElectricAndy26 күн бұрын
I’ve since worked out the relay function is next to useless on the Eddi. Relay had very limited control and its logic of treating surplus and 3rd party divert is different to EDDI and Zappi. Maybe that why the customer paid for 3 eddis.

@corymac Жыл бұрын
Sure thing! Basically, in this setup the gas boiler will heat up these water tanks, and the hot water for the house comes from these tanks. They usually come with electric elements as a backup incase of boiler failure. We have hooked up these Eddi’s to monitor excess / exported power from the solar, and will be using it to heat the water ‘thermally storing the energy’ to be available later ( when the sun might not be shining ) and save gas!

@@corymac Yeah, still good, but the greats were the likes of Johnny Bravo, Ed Edd and Eddie, Dexters Lab, and Cow and Chicken. At least the rumours after the merger weren't true. CN lives!

Could you not have run one contactor and wired the overtemp and thermostat in series so ether one would disconnect the Eddies
@corymac Жыл бұрын
In hindsite, that probably would also have been a smart way to do it! The safety drawings for those elements showed two separate contactors. Good thinking 😎👍🏼

22:00 so are the contactors always energised during normal operation? And the thermal cut out needs to be energised for the thermostat contactor to close?
@corymac Жыл бұрын
Yes! It’s important if it fails, for safety it fails open

It’s not a network connection but a CT ( current transducer ) connection.

whats the difference between a contactor and a relay? they sound like they are very much the same, except maybe the contactor latches
@corymac Жыл бұрын
Very similar, relays are used to control circuit contacts due to set parameters or conditions. Contactors are used more to interrupt or establish connections repeatedly under various conditions. More common in 3 phase
@Chillielectrical Жыл бұрын
Not always, but generally off-the-shelf contactors have AC coils and relays have DC coils.
@jibbily Жыл бұрын
Normal 13A single phase immersion heater timers just use a relay instead of a contactor. Is that immersion heater > 13A per phase?
@Chillielectrical Жыл бұрын
Yeah, this immersion element is somewhere between 14-16A per phase. Eddi can control the output current to a maximum of 16A / 3.68kW 😅
