*I learned the ultimate outdoors lesson PERMANENTLY back in 1982.* I stupidly, foolishly, arrogantly, and egotistically thought that I could go winter camping in the Alaska Range in mid-January while pushing my high quality, but nonetheless, 3-season clothing, sleeping bag, ground pad, and tent past the point where any sane outdoorsman should have dared to take such equipment. The temperatures that night fell to somewhere around -19° F. All of us were under clothed, under equipped, and under tented, no one more so than I was. I came very close to dying from hypothermia that night, and even after we took refuge in an unheated (incandescent light bulbs only) generator building, I shivered uncontrollably for the better part of 9.5 hours. That was approximately 2 hours of shivering in the tent while wearing every stitch of clothing in my pack; 6 hours shivering in the generator building; and another 1.5 hours shivering in the lodge when the owner came outside at daylight to check on his generator, discovered us sitting on our sleeping pads inside of our sleeping bags on top of the shed's concrete pad; and brought us inside, where his wife fed us innumerable cups of coffee and hot cocoa. That was a valuable lesson to learn. *ALL* clothing, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, tents, and outdoor equipment is limited structurally and/or by its ability to insulate. Exceed those limits by whatever their maximum allowable tolerances are, and you put your life in jeopardy. That night in the Alaska Range GOD alone decided that it wasn't yet my time to die. My core body temperature had to be perilously low by the time that the lodge owner came out and found us.

And why is it possible? Through correct kit choice, careful planning, being calm, having contingency, having experience and in a storm case if possible staying where you are until it’s safe to move. Simple education that will help people who may unfortunately get caught out at some point.
@garethwiseman943 жыл бұрын
for the whole video I was worried for Blue (despite knowing he was ok and if anything was to happen to you he would have been ok ) but you forget how hardy collies are and the wind hardly effects them being so low to the ground and him just wanting to play as soon as he was out of the tent shows how awesome they are. It does show though how much the right kit and more importantly experience are key because like you said it would have been an easy and a wrong decision to bail when the pole broke. im sure Quintcraft will be able to fix the sleeve though and easy enough to get a new pole. Glad you both got down ok though that said
@BUSHMANandBLUE3 жыл бұрын
Yes thanks mate. Most people don’t get the hardiness of some dog breeds because they own dogs that are very much a pavement or handbag breed. Collies have worked farms for hundreds of years in the harshest of weathers to help feed the human population and always will!

Hi,Al! The Great End area is absolutely beautiful. Thanks for this video. I've read through The Storm Arwen debate, but what better spot to stay away from falling trees, flying debris/trampolines, and coastal dangers?(lol) ANYWAY... you had contingency plans, know the area well, planned and packed meticulously, had a fairly easy escape route on the S. side picked out, had biveys for you and Blue, were prepared to ditch any unnecessary gear if needs be, could have used the rock summit shelters or gone down to the Sprinkling Tarn to get out of the worst winds.(not sure how far away the car park is) It sounds like you planned well enough that no mountain rescue team would be needed.You've stressed the importance of having the proper kit, knowledge, and experience to undertake this camp, and you included both written and verbal warnings to the inexperienced. I trust your abilities, but wouldn't trust many in the same situation. ATB
@BUSHMANandBLUE3 жыл бұрын
Well Bill thank you for completely understanding the whole situation and having a considered approach before writing. Your message completely describes why I remained calm and safe throughout. I haven’t watched any news at all since Christmas (I don’t think I’ve missed anything) but by the sounds of all the dangers at lower levels I had a relatively safe storm experience which I was prepared for but many weren’t and were caught out. As I replied to Paul M’s negative comment (he deleted it afterwards) I was safe and gaining experience but come a survival situation he would trust me but I wouldn’t trust him. Thanks again. Al

@BUSHMANandBLUE3 жыл бұрын
There wasn’t a chance I’d need them if I stayed still. The only danger is the cold but we were both boiling. I was actually sweating. If something drastic happened with the tent then I would still be warm in my bivvy in the summit shelter. Moving would increase my chances of injury so quite simply stay still and keep warm until it passes. You’d be fine for 3 days like that. I had enough food and water. Thanks pal.
@johnshaw87693 жыл бұрын
Hello Alan and Blue. Another exciting adventure that was beautifully filmed and very atmospheric but so big on excitement. I think it was a worthwhile thing to do even if it's not one to be repeated on purpose. You now know the 'test to destruction limit' of your tent and that your other kit will keep you alive and even reasonably comfortable in extreme conditions. Also, having done this under (more or less) controlled conditions you now know the drill if it happens to you when you don't want it to. The other thing learned is that the Abisko can be used in the winter but it is not a real four season tent. It would need to be free standing of at least semi-geodesic or preferably geodesic design with a snow skirt or apron to prevent the ingress of snow under the fly sheet that you experienced. Especially given that the snow could have been a lot worse. A gas stove detached from the gas canister with a pre-heat loop to vaporise the fuel would be wise at low temperatures and also taking the fuel container into your sleeping bag to keep it warm. Or, use meths in a Trangia bottle that you can keep warm beside you without fear of it spilling. The old Whisperlite stoves are great because they vaporise fuel and can blast out a flame at high pressure even when you're low on fuel but I wouldn't use one inside a tent that was smaller than the Albert Hall. I hope this doesn't sound too preachy, it's just meant to be a few constructive thoughts. More power to you for being brave enough to try. I would be very interested to see you review a real four season tent designed for extreme conditions if you could lay your hands on one - the are b....y expensive though.
@BUSHMANandBLUE3 жыл бұрын
If the tent was double poled which it is designed to I think it would have helped but definitely a snow skirt is needed. These tents can weigh a lot though. I have a couple of 4 season stoves but the one I used works well up to what I’ve tested it which is -8. It flared because I overfilled the gas canister nothing to do with weather. I’ve done it a few times but don’t learn😂. I hope people have an idea of at least this one survival technique if they ever get caught out in a storm… staying put. I need another tent to test next!😬 thanks pal.

I really enjoyed your video and seing your experience. It definitely takes some effort and resilience to do this and then film as well along the way. It was great that you looked after Blue so well and he seemed more than happy to be out in such conditions. I have always wanted to get measured wind speeds like that but now for my own reasons I would not venture out on a summit like this with such a forecast. 10 years ago I would definitely have been up for it for sure. Nice touch dropping the tent to make it lower. I have a fair amount of experience camping but would not have thought of that one. When It comes to tents though what can I cay and there will always be a debate on this one. I wouldn't have taken this tent. You either are a Hilleberg person or you are not. The Akto for example has a toggle to stop the door opening in conditions such as these. It also has 30d fabric instead of 20d on the Abisko and a very easy option to double pole or use a 10mm pole which many users do and take advantage of with few reported problems, apart from leaking zippers in heavy rain.. But to be honest I wouldn't have taken the Akto either as in my opinion it too would have been at its limit. I too was out but only on the coast that night to get a video for my channel in a very exposed location. Wind gusts here were recorded at 87mph (82 forecast) by the met office less than a mile from where I was. My Hilleberg Soulo BL took it no problem at all to be fair. I could only record 50.4. MPH but wasn't able to stand out for long measuring as I was getting blasted with salt water spray. So its still a bit subjective and there are many many considerations for a trip like this but surely the choice of shelter is one of the most important.. ATB and great that you lived to fight another day. Keep up the excellent content. Tom
@BUSHMANandBLUE3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Tom. I’m not sure any tent would have made that unscathed but I would have loved to have tested a Soulo properly up there. Next time I will! I regularly camp in hurricanes and it sure makes you feel alive, hanging onto the tent , it's even better when it rains as well! Keep up the good work doing what love the most. Growing up in these >80+ into 100+ MPH winds with some regularity in all seasons... it's still an awesome force, and an amazing feeling to be out and about in. It always surprises me in those high force knock ya down and roll ya winds, how it seams to blow right past your nose and mouth before you can suck in a breath. Whether at work or play in these conditions... It takes your breath away rippin' past your face before your mouth can scoop a gulp! When working in the Arctic dark of winter... this wind violence, drifting snow/ice, at way below zero exposure is incredibly dangerous. Sound judgment, skill-set, comfort zone, planning/sequencing, communication, and proven Arctic gear are paramount.

I was on kinder scout today got a reading of 53mph I'm 18 stone it thrown me around like a rag doll felt like I was getting hit by a train and a crushing fealing , no tent would ever survive a 55mph plus wind. I upload a vlog for everyone to see the power of 53mph

I'm a Canadian that did quite a bit of four seasons hiking/camping in my younger days. A observation: Never pitch a tent out in the open like that unless you have no other choice. If' you're on your way to the South Pole or on some featureless tundra, you have no choice. Find a hollow or pitch it in the lee of some boulders, a ledge, a rise, a bush ... anything but sticking up from the landscape like that even when you think the weather is good. Consider that your choices may risk the lives of a helicopter rescue crew some day.
@longlifeprinters93 жыл бұрын
Well, he wanted to test his tent in that wind & if it failed, which it did, he just hunkered down in a lower profile covering. He looked like he had what it took to even make it if the top of the tent ripped off, just get under the covers & your own body heat would keep you warm as long as there was some water / wind proofing on the wind side of you. I've done that before but, in only 60mph winds. One danger I could see is if a big enough rock got air-born & hit him in the head but, all the small rocks were already blown away.
@abrahamdozer62733 жыл бұрын
@@longlifeprinters9 it would take a lot more than that wind to lift rocks. Another reason not to be the most exposed thing on the landscape is to avoid lightning strikes. That may not have been applicable that night but you can't be sure what is happening in a big system like that and lightning discharges may not be out of the question. Anyway, it's bad practice to not shelter as much as you can. You can be damned sure that our Mesolithic ancestors would never have camped there.

I camped at Loch Avon in the Cairngorms one January and it fell to -20C. Actually sweating in my Redline down sleeping bag with too many clothes on. @@BUSHMANandBLUE guess so, but sweat can turn to chill… I was interested to see your use of the space blanket. On another channel the guy was saying to use that as the most outer garment because of all the moisture that gets trapped by it, ruining insulation properties of down etc. Any thoughts?
@BUSHMANandBLUE3 жыл бұрын
Yes you don’t want to get your down wet as it does reduce its ability to loft and therefore trap air too insulate. I carry a foil planked and foil bivvy but only for emergencies for myself or helping others. Obviously they are impervious to water escape.

Great video although some obviously disagree . I personally think it’s good to see how an experienced wild camper deals with this type of extreme weather condition, having been caught out my self with much higher winds than forecast on a wild camp. @thedaftestnameicouldthinko82333 жыл бұрын
I totally respect your decision to test yourself and your gear. Personally, I would not have taken my dog - and I’d have been wrong. Blue was clearly fine with things. Listening to the things you said, you obviously gave a lot of thought to what you were getting into. I have been in high winds during long treks in the Pyrenees and in Scotland. I had to keep my sleeping bag dry for the next night so it stayed in the rucksack. I wore all my clothes under my waterproofs, ready to bail if necessary. I did not cook because of the way the tent was being battered. Just cold food and water. In a Phoenix Phantom, a ridge tent with long panels of fabric, I have been pressed into the ground by the sides of the tent when they bowed in. In a TNF Tadpole, I have done the keeping the poles up with my head and it got tedious. I bailed. I’m sure you had your escape route planned. On nights with no risk of condensation, I remove the poles and pitch the tent as flat as possible so it works as a bivy bag. As you discovered, turning your back to the wind while urinating can be fraught. If the wind permits, keep your legs together. Otherwise, turn at an angle so your bits don’t get frostbite but the stream is blown to the side. Quite a few KZbinrs have done windy camp videos recently and I thought I had seen enough of them but this video was a different class. The filming was good but what you said was more important. Good for learning from, just in case. And seeing Blue have fun in the conditions shows how we should react to Mother Nature’s exuberance.
@BUSHMANandBLUE3 жыл бұрын
Wow thank you! You definitely get it!Your experience and knowledge gives you credit to comment on such matters and straight away I’d trust to camp with you in unwelcoming conditions. You don’t get that from watching videos and as I said to Paul M comment which was said negatively in a godlike fashion (which he’s removed), he would trust me in a survival situation because of my experiences but I wouldn’t trust him. I’m confident that people like you say will benefit from a video like this. Thanks mate!!!

@@BUSHMANandBLUE : Life becomes a sorry thing if we refrain from putting ourselves in situations we can learn from. As Hamish Brown wrote we sin with our eyes open. My own 1979 sleep on Great End was preceded by a nighttime ascent of Skew Ghyll. My lighting was a cheap bicycle lamp, my bivy bag one of those orange bags and my sleeping bag was from Woolworths. We went up because Rupert Hoare, sadly no longer with us, wanted to see the sunrise. Obviously, the cloud came down and I woke with a soaked sleeping bag. That was a learning experience! Anyway, the sun came out and we went along the ridge to Scafell to climb Slingsby’s Chimney, I think it was. That was Friday night and Saturday morning and we still had Sunday for Bow Fell. Couldn’t do that these days.
