Great footage and where I am in Bull Bay we have had a 6 hour power cut and it's only just come back on. In the past I have seen waves actually going over the roof of that house on the point. You don't think of danger when you are a kid as me and my brother with full waterproofs would go down to Amlwch breakwater in weather like this. At that time the breakwater was on 2 levels so around 10ft lower on the harbour side. We used to sit on the bench there and just let the waves come over us. We thought it was fantastic but looking back what a stupid thing to do.

That brings back memories. Around about 1977 or 1978 I fished a club match on Holyhead Breakwater in what was later described as a force 11. In those days the lower level had railway lines on it and was completely flooded, because the water could not drain off quick enough. The whole Breakwater was shaking as each wave hit and rocks and stones were being thrown over. My friend and I bailed out with 2 hours, of a 5 hour the match, left to go. Incredibly there were two locals to our left still on there , one of whom had caught a conger eel about 10lb about 30 minutes earlier. As we made our way back the sheer weight of the water coming over was driving us almost to our knees. That was one of the most frightening experiences of my life.

In January 1974, a few months before I started work at Great Dun Fell they had recorded a gust of 134mph. The record would probably have been higher as the wind was strengthening but the anemometer was destroyed shortly after that gust was recorded. I never saw winds like that while working there but there were a few occasions when progress to windward was only possible on hands and knees.

@@fishingcountrylifewithtommyjoe Agree it wasn't as strong and there were no danger to life warnings and as you say it didn't last as long. By all accounts it was the rare wind direction that was the cause of the damage. The breakwater always protects the marina but that time the wind was funnelled up into marina which hardly ever happens.
