STORM PIA - Go Arounds & Diversions with 50 Knot Crosswinds at Manchester Airport

All the best highlights from today’s storm!
Storm Pia hit the UK on 21st December 2023, with Manchester Airport getting hit quite badly. Crosswinds of up to 50 knots caused crazy go arounds and mass diversions with some flight returning to their originating airport and the odd go around which is a perfectly normal but still an impressive procedure to watch.

Information about Manchester Airport:
Situated in the North West of England Manchester Airport is a popular choice for holiday makers and business travelers alike. As plane spotters we get treated to many different airlines and aircraft with the amazing ability to see them up close at many locations including Southside, the runway visitor park, the airport pub and many more. We see it all from the Emirates A380 take off to Ryanair landings (you can decide if they're hard landings!). There are few other airports where you can get up close and see inside the cockpit of Etihad airways or a British Aiways A320 all in the space of one morning. We are the best place to catch live arrivals and departures at Manchester Airport.

I landed at Manchester from Antayla tonight around 7pm and actually thought we were not going to make it at one point.I've flown many many times and never experienced a gust of wind that hit us as we were landing, kids were crying and adults screaming but the Pilot did a rudder correction at the last minute and straightened it up. I've never come in sideways to the ground at speed and can tell you it was scary!! Full respect to the pilot and crew of easyjet for the skill showed in the landing.

Most of these landings look incredibly smooth! Imagine flying all the way from Singapore and having to do a go-around just when you think you have arrived!

I used to work at a factory next to the Heald Green crossroads, which is less than a mile from touchdown. Waiting at the crossroads you're directly in line with the approach, I can clearly remember the planes in a queue, flying "sideways" in these sort of conditions. Completely mesmerising, and easy to miss that traffic lights had gone green!

That first Singapore landing attempt was wild, a replay of the flight path showed that its climb rate on the go-around was about 4000ft/min

The storm made the aircrafts look like paper planes. a380 Emirates was wobbly for that weight. Butter landings were Easyjet and Ryanair. Great videos. Keep it up Simon n Liz

I was on the easyjet that went around. We ended up at east midlands for 4 hours then returned to manchester for another go.More than half the passengers got off at east midlands as they had had enough flying for one day 😅

Not sure that headline is correct. Very few commercial aircraft are certified for 50kt crosswinds making against company SOPs to attempt a landing
