Good stuff ladies. You know the first big storm you do will be the worst and after that your always compare it to that first one. :-) Great checklists! Sail Safe guys. Ant, Cid and the pooch crew.

We have been out in several storms already and we were just discussing which one was worse. They have all taught us something like how we can deal with them, how the boat can deal with them, but we are still learning so lots more to go. But as far as storms are concerned we believe we want to learn how to avoid them the most.

We got ours via the Mr. D link. Love mine. I've recommended it on my channel, playlist & FB cooking on a boat page. Sent some your way 🤞

Could you or have you got a video on the proper protocol on using a vhf including the difference with mayday and pan pan ... also what channels do what and DSC calling .. many thanks x
@SailingYachtSaltyLass4 жыл бұрын
To be honest, what you asking for is the RYA VHF course which covers exactly these items. The courses are not that expensive and once you have the licence you have it for life. The book is available from the RYA (link below) To briefly answer your points - MAYDAY is used when there is a life-threatening situation (someone is going to die) whereas PANPAN is emergency where no-one is going to die. The mast going overboard would be PANPAN, but a crew member having a suspected heart attack is a MAYDAY. DSC is a whole topic on the VHF course. It is basically SMS messaging for marine radio and there is a lot to take in. www.rya.org.uk/shop/pages/products.aspx?product=rya-vhf-handbook

Mr D is brilliant. We were taken by surprise when we got the email from them and initially thought it was a spoof. Completely unexpected. Anyway, it was not a spoof and we now have an affiliate link. Yay!

Liked the check list. We have a habit of stating out loud eg. ”Engine power off” when we arrive and dock. Just that both know it is really off and won’t consume the start battery. What kinds of commands/info do you give to each other while you leave port, sail the seas and when you arrive to port? That would be fun to know and learn new stuff.

Also if someone is cooking in the galley or having a bio break in the head, and there is a bigger boat passing and you will be hit with a couple of waves, we give a shout out ”waves” so that the ones inside know

Yes - we do something similar and grab whatever is to hand...

The last item on the list is "CHECK IGNITION" after we left it on one time and the next day the starter battery was not a happy thing. We have a new starter battery now... complete coincidence.... :-)

Hi Ladies, passed my YM last summer in The Clyde. Had spent hours in prep practicing man-overboard recovery under sail. Of course during the exam, it took three attempts which is fine but then the examiner insisted I organise the crew to recover the casualty using equipment on the boat; there would be no hoying the weighted fender back onboard with the boathook! I wonder how much prep you ladies have put into this exercise and what your plan is to recover a casualty barring in mind that casualty might just be one of you! Another great video :-) Many thanks.
@SailingYachtSaltyLass4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian - Well done on passing your YM. In our case the short answer is "Not enough prep". We have done it under sail by heaving to, but not in Salty Lass. Of course we do discuss MoB and since it is only us aboard then the MoB is very, very likely to be one of us. The boat's high freeboard is another issue since it makes it very, very hard to reach the casualty in the water. Thanks for commenting

Bev's mindset is the same as mine: "Prepare for the worst, hope for the best." Have y'all ever inspected your diesel tanks for sediment? It probably isn't a concern getting first world fuel all the time but I am curious nonetheless. 🤔
@SailingYachtSaltyLass3 жыл бұрын
No we have not. The tank is not easy to inspect so we inspect the primary fuel filter instead and ALWAYS use an additive to dissolve goop and kill any diesel bug

Leaving or indeed entering harbour under engine besides having Genoa ready I have anchor ready if wind is not playing properly. Also when leaving dock Incheck all lines are off instead of relying on crew. Would not be the firstbtimevI ammar tiller scratching head cos boat stops dead and turns string doesnt want to play.😂

We have only had one dock line incident where, after the line was brought aboard, a loop of it fell overboard and snagged another cleat. It was definitely a "What the hell???" kind of moment...

How much for Mr D?

It depends.... The prices vary by size and number of pots. We bought the 3L version with an additional top pot for around £120 if I recall correctly. I shall now shamelessly plug our Mr D affiliate link which, if you click on it and buy one, apparently we get something at no cost to you. We have not seen one yet.... mrdscookware.com/product-category/thermal-cookers?wpam_id=1

What the heck is a clapper? 😊

It's one of the many Northern Ireland terms that I am picking up while I am here. It means very quick like those clappers that you see at football games whirling very quickly.

If I was you, I would worry about when Gaynor starts the advanced course in local dialect or "Speakin' Norn Iron". Until she gets a right founderin' or discovers something that is quare 'n' good there is no need to panic :-)
