Storm water launches manhole cover

A flash flood sent a manhole sewer cover flying into the air in Denver, Colorado.

The pressure coming from that storm sewer pipe must have been ASTRONOMICAL. Manhole covers are VERY heavy (around 250 pounds or so, or so I've read).

@@Takeshi357 Weight of the cover depends on the municipality. Some covers do weigh as much as 250 pounds, some weigh only 90 pounds. We have a long downhill street that has a manhole cover that use to pop out of the hole quite often during heavy rain storms. We put in a heavy 250 pound cover to prevent it from "popping". You lift them out with a truck bed mounted crane.

It looks like a 30 inch manhole cover, with an area of 706.9 square inches. If it weighs 150 lb, a pressure of 0.212 lb or 3.3 oz per square inch would lift the manhole cover. This is 1.4% greater than atmospheric pressure. Not much at all.

In about 1978 I was in a friend's car in a storm, and as he drove into the driveway of a parking building through standing water, we unexpectedly felt a huge and disconcerting bump. Later, when we left, the water was gone and we saw the manhole cover was dislodged, and he'd driven into the open hole without seeing it.

Hopefully your neighborhood has a separate sewer system (storm runoff and household sewage in separate lines). Because it sure would be nasty having something like that splashing up in your basement.

Storm covers are a certain weight so that when pressure gets to a certain amount, they pop off. It sends water on the street to clear the pipe.

A slug of water that filled the pipe (literally) was moving at incredible velocity causing the air in the pipe to be pushed out - thats why the cover was dancing - and when it finally made it there - KA-BOOM.
