At the end of the fair use timer she said I know it is not real. Actually this did happen that was the viking raid on Lindisfarne in 793.

That's what I loved about Vikings, they didn't shy away from making them vikings. Vikings pillage, rape, kill. I was afraid that for the sake of us liking the characters they would make them more merciful or civilized. Nope. They are portrayed as monsters, as they should be based on what we know about them.
@TheKrislaf7 жыл бұрын
This episode portrayed the raid on Lindisfarne monastery in 793. This raid on unarmed holymen caused an outcry in Christian Europe and is considered the event that started "the Viking age".

@Swede They also could have been talking about the Kievan Rus (The people the Vikings normally raid) After being at war with the Vikings for centuries they adapted many Viking fighting strategies and when in foreign counties the Kievan Rus would often claim they were Vikings due to the power that word brought, A fair few of the "Viking" mercenary groups can actually be traced back to the Kievan Rus.

They raided, traded and explored from Moscow to America and to the Middle East. They founded most of Russia's cities as river trading posts. They nearly conquered Britain as Vikings and did conquer England as Normans. They spread such terror that many prayer books had their own Norse reference. Amazing people in brutal times.

+Blazekingz I think he means that many of the major cities in Russia built on river coasts were originally founded by vikings as trading posts. Obviously it was slavs that actually developed those places into full cities.

The cool thing about our history, is that while it's filled with violence, the way it has shaped our world today is fascinating. The main reason why so much technology and knowledge was spread all over the world around their time period is mainly due to them raiding settlements in England and Paris and so on and trading those things with other people all over the world. This show has some pretty brutal moments, it's not as bad as Game of Thrones but sometimes its pretty close, so hopefully that doesnt take away from their experience.

This show is great because there are no clear-cut "good" or "bad" characters. Good people occasionally do bad things, and vice-versa. Well, Athelstan (the young monk) might be the only clearly "good" character in the show ;-)

Well, there is a lot of violence and brutality in Game of Thrones, but you don't have main protagonists buchering innocent people with cold blood. You wont see Jon Snow goign aroudn raping and murdering peasants. You have Arya murdering with cold blood, but she only kills "evil" people. Vikings is on another level in that depertmant as there are no "good guys" here really.

You should be able to find it online somewhere. Basically there is just a lot more open nudity and a lot of the Violence is more explicit. There is also an extended version of the show where they left in a lot of scenes that got cut. There are a few in particular that actually add a lot to the story and characters.

... In the name of Odin, yiur new video has made my day :) Ragnar is not like any other, he thinks differently... Travis Fimmel proved himself to be an acting legend :) Yes, the Northmen were traders, farmer, discoverers, but a part of them were Vikings, who went on raid to settle areas and to take their gold. Btw, some claim that one of the possible reasons to why the Viking period started, might be that they began to raid as an act of defense against Frankish expansion (And especially after the massacre of Verden, were he butchered 4500 pagans).

The first few episodes really are gore-y, but you have to respect the balance that the story has between showing the realistic brutality of Vikings throughout history, and the relatable, heartwarming moments that keep us rooting for certain characters anyways despite the blatant display of brutality. And the first legitimate raid to England was just like this.. Slaughter and a realization that they could kick some West Land Ass.

(POTENTIALLY SLIGHT HISTORY SPOILERS...but not for the show itself...) Great reactions! I would add that this is an interesting period for the Vikings. Within a few centuries, the Vikings will have largely converted to Christianity and, consequently, ended their violent raids. This show is interesting in the sense that many of these characters on the show are real figures in history (or, in the case of Ragnar and Lagathea, parts of oral histories via epic sagas). Ragnar, Rollo, Floki, etc, -- they have a place in actual human history. In this show, they are somewhat amalgamated into this single story.

This was the first clash of cultures that they had and it was extreme for sure. The Norsemen had never seen a culture where the priests were so far away from violence than they have seen. Not one man there could fight and that would be impossible to occur in a Viking society. Not justifying it. It's just a culture clashing with a culture that would never expect that to happen. If your mum is a Christian, She will love the character you expect her to!

I keep having this urge to jump through the screen and yell, "THEY'RE VIKINGS!!!" at your sister. I'm sorry. What does she think Vikings did? Sailed around the world to give everyone flower crowns and cups of tea? They're not puppy trainers, and they don't live on rainbows and sunflowers. This first raid is actually a historical event, the Viking raid of Lindisfarne in 793, by the way. It pretty much happened the way it was depicted. They came in, killed a bunch of them, took the gold, and left.

This show is kinda like someone took real Viking history, threw some myth and legends in, then threw it all in a blender. Most of the characters, locations, and events are all either directly taken or inspired by real history, however things are often moved around and manipulated for the sake of the show being exciting and interesting. The most popular example of this is Ragnar and Rollo. In real life they were not brothers, in fact if Ragnar was a real person they would have lived a few generations apart. We do know for a fact that Rollo was a real person (he did some things that would be spoiling to mention) however Ragnar's existence is debated. Some people believe he is actually multiple people who's accomplishments all got attributed to the mythical figure of Ragnar, while others believe he was a real person who maybe didnt quite do everything that is claimed. Regardless we will likely never know due to the fact that the Norse didnt keep written records and most of their pre-medieval history is extremely murky.

Revan Ruler lol, how civilised a society is, is not dependant on gender equality. A good example is the Germanic tribes has more gender equality than the romans, but how was more civilised?
@lordeaa46037 жыл бұрын
+stormbringerr mourn They were undoubtedly horrible times, but that doesn't at all negate from Revan's point. Vikings did not have the traditional gender roles that would become the norm for the majority of society. Viking women were allowed to fight, they could be Jarls and Viking law valued a woman equally to a man. Its pretty amazing for its time.
@johnjungkook27217 жыл бұрын
Lord EAA Places that came under hard time, where tribes stayed small, often had female fighters. It's "pretty amazing" compared with the rest of Europe, but not the rest of the world if we think about the kind of society that the vikings had (much closer to small tribe Africa than imperial China). Secondly, even though they were valued and could possibly rule (supposedly, I have no primary sources for this), they were definitely still expected and often forced to bear many children, which had its predictable limitations on rights and abilities.
@johnjungkook27217 жыл бұрын
All of these butt-hurt little fanboys are here defending this. Can we all agree that murder and rape are horrible, murder especially if it is not for self defense? The Vikings were horrible (and note that I am not saying that the Christians weren't horrible either) and this episode was supposed to be disgusting. I personally never really got over it. I watch the show but I'm never 100% with the Vikings, which I think is good for the moral integrity of the show.
@Drewe2237 жыл бұрын
To be fair most people in these comments are not defending anything. Saying "they are Vikings and its what they did" isnt an excuse and it isnt a justification, its a reality. I think people are more trying to help them understand the nature of Viking culture. I do agree with you though, I dont think you are ever really supposed to be entirely on the Vikings side. One of the things that I like the most about Vikings is its sense of moral ambiguity, through really good character development and acting many of us end up siding with what are arguably the "bad guys".
@johnjungkook27217 жыл бұрын
I agree with you abt the show, but there's this trend occurring where fans of the show are just there throwing out little bits of Viking culture flattery as a way, I assume, of keeping the reactors open to the characters that they are supposed to like. You say "understanding", but I think its more often about convincing them to momentarily suppress their hatred for unprovoked violence and keep making reaction videos. You talk of "the nature of Viking culture" but I assure you, this show is not even close to historically and culturally accurate. Tendency towards unprovoked violence is one of the few things we actually do know.
@Drewe2237 жыл бұрын
Oh trust me I know, old Norse history is one of my favorite subjects. This show is very much a stylized and fantasized version of this time period. I do know what you mean about people trying to make the Vikings out as something that they weren't because they dont want people to hate them. Personally I dont mind watching and even rooting for morally grey or even evil characters so it was never a problem with me. But you do see a lot of people making the VIkings out to be some freedom loving bastion of gender equality when this is really not true. When I said "the nature of Viking culture" i was referring to the violence and cruelty.
@Rackhark7 жыл бұрын
