Engage the front just enough to keep a majority in place while you did what you did in Saratoga and find the weak side of the fort. Going for the front door was the issue at Ticonderoga. Should’ve stacked up more on your right and pushed once you found that soft spot. The advice you asked for.

The update greatly improved the AI defense of forts by doing one simple thing... actually getting them to use their artillery effectively from inside the fort. My guess is, its just simply going to be harder now.

I have gotten up to around a 14-ship fleet with close to 400 guns in the fleet. (No "save scumming" on "Hard") The key is to constantly watch the numbers in the sea zone... sometimes, you can escape your sea zone and get to a zone where numbers are in your favor. Wait for British ships to engage against a supply ship, and use that as your opportunity to get out of that sea zone. Wait for the same to sneak back to port. Your Navy can become an amazing source of income (selling ships, capturing British supply ships)... however, the upkeep and repair gets overwhelming when your fleet reaches that size. One of the problems with the recent update, however, is it seems that 3rd Rates are no longer losing crew during the Auto Resolve engagements (think you called it skirmishing) Don't use your Navy until you get all your free ships. (You get 3 free cutters early on... added to the two 30-gun brigs... it gives you more of a fighting chance) (With the obvious exception of grabbing your second 30 gun and getting them both to Newport) Find matchups where you have the advantage in a sea zone... allow the computer to auto-resolve a portion of the battle... that will reduce the crew size and allow you to board when you actually start the battle. (Like I said though, that doesn't seem to work for 3rd Rates anymore) I'll tell you this, Navy is worth it for one single reason... that first moment you sink an invasion fleet ... you will yell out loud like a Viking warrior and wake up everyone in the house :) One more thing... get your Navy to New Haven as quickly as possible. The repair improvement makes it advantageous to have a Navy because you will be using it so much more often. Note: If you are attempting to board a larger ship... you need an almost 3-1 and always a 2-1 advantage number-wise... larger ships have a distinct advantage of firing down on you as you board. Not advisable to board larger ships unless you have a major crew advantage. One tactic I have started to use for larger ships is boarding them the full realization that I'm going to lose, but what that does is waters down the numbers for the larger ship. You have to have a pretty big numbers advantage in total ships to do this however, and you have to line up your ships in a way where they can reboard the ship you just lost very quickly, otherwise, that tactic can go very badly, very quickly.

Thank you for the great tips. I can definitely attest to 3rd rates not losing crew in the auto resolve. I had to let the auto-resolve sink one recently because I just couldn't do anything to their ship on the tactical screen.

I hope they fix that quickly... the only way to have a shot at preventing the New York landing force is to have 3rd an 1st Rates in your fleet... because the Invasion force is guarded by a massive fleet) Each unit also has a ship carrying it now, which wasn't the case before the patch. @@Quickslvr_Gaming

I'm honestly okay with letting a lot of the invasion fleets through. I feel like the ground battles are my strong point, along with building a strong army. The navy is my weakness. I've started to just auto resolve a lot of naval battles to grind rep as I'm crap in the tactical naval battles.

At a certain point, the invasion forces are the only thing that will keep the British in the game... so I agree in terms of adding to the challenge. However, for me... nothing is more satisfying than watching the Auto Resolve put 9,500 British soldiers at the bottom of The Sound. :) @@Quickslvr_Gaming

When taking a fort, I try to have artillery break a couple of walls and the units manning the walls. Surround the fort if you have enough units, at least cover the door/gate to catch any fleeing units. Then try to go in on at least two sides (usually one side that leads directly to the opening of the inner keep where their artillery is). Push as many guys into the fort as possible, the defending artillery will still eat your units up.

Yeah, that sort of seems like what I used to do last campaign. Only having 2x 3lb galloper gun batteries obviously isn't ideal. I like how enemy artillery works well in the forts now.

With the small navy stay in port until a winnable battle comes to you. Toggle patrol or destruction and that’ll usually do the trick. Once battle is won immediately sail to port. Repeat until the naval force is reputable lol

Don't get rid of your Cutters early on (even though "yes" a clear bug on selling a cutter for over $10000)... all ships add to the gun total of the fleet, and Auto Resolve is all about the gun total. Those cutters will allow you to take on a 40-gun ship and board it successfully.

Good to know about gun total. When it comes to the tactical battle I just find the cutters to be useless, but I'm not very good at it.

You are 100% correct... they are basically useless on the tactical screen (sometimes useful boarding a ship that just barely survived an earlier boarding attempt)... but for Auto Resolve gun totals matter, and somehow those little guys manage to stay in the fight and make a difference on the Strategic Map.@@Quickslvr_Gaming

Yeah, I wanted to try them out some more because you can earn a ton of reputation, but they just aren't fun for me. I'll try a few more times, but that episode took 7 hours to record because I was bashing my head into the wall with the Naval side of things.

yeah that is always frustrating with UG games routing units should route in a retreat .. always angers me when an enemy force would route right through my lines and then recover

There have been some mentions that routing is being worked on for the next patch and update, so I am crossing my fingers. At least the devs are aware of it and are trying to work on it. They hired a contractor who tries to work on code balance and bugs.

You can disband the ships then reform them in another port to avoid risking losing them and they keep their experience

@@Quickslvr_Gaming I am also bad in boarding...my last mistake was left empty ship of the line without protection (because I need all crew fight boarding with enemy frigate) ...and what? enemy from already sunked small ship come in boat and STEAL my 3rate ship of the line!...and after that I have to boarding ship of the line...probably I losed about 500-600 sailors more because that mistake:) That stolen ship started shooting and is very hard catch such strong ship. Sry, my english is not good enough but hope people understand something;)
